MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013): Keyboard and Multi-Touch trackpad unresponsive

Brand new Macbook PRO Retina 15inch. (1 day old) Running 10.9

EFI 1.2 installed.

Keyboard/trackpad hangs when using the left USB.

The EFI update 1.3 apparently fixes this issue for the 13inch macbook pro.

I have a 15inch macbook pro. The EFI update 1.2 does not resolve this issue for me.

Whenever I plug something into the left USB, after the 2nd or 3rd time, the keyboard and trackpad become unresponsive. To get the keyboard/trackpad back again, I must restart the machine.

This is what the consol says:

Nov 12 11:29:56 leaf kernel[0]: AppleUSBMultitouchDriver::_deviceSetReport - DeviceRequest returned error 0xe000404f (interface 1, reportID 0xac, payload 2

Nov 12 11:29:56 leaf kernel[0]: AppleUSBMultitouchDebug: _deviceSetReport returned an error in configureDataMode

Nov 12 11:29:56 leaf kernel[0]: AppleUSBMultitouchDriver::_deviceSetReport - DeviceRequest for reportID 0xac returned with result 0xe000404f - retrying

I cannot install the EFI update 1.3 as I get an alert "This software is not supported on your system." I assume because it was made only for the 13inch.

Is this a hardware or firmware issue? If it's only firmware, why does this issue only affect some users? If it's hardware, should I just return this macbook?

So this may be cargo-cult debugging, but vtd is related to virtual instructions.

I wasn't using virtualbox (and old version) but uninstalled it just in case it might do something at startup...

There was one message in the console log:

2/3/14 7:22:50.578 PM SystemStarter[50]: VirtualBox Support and USB Drivers (312) did not complete successfully

I'll post back if the problem happens again...

What was in your SD card reader? I'm debugging a random hang that seems to be caused by a card in the SD card reader. This hang comes with a log message like the above. Using the disk utility to look at the partitions (you can't make this stuff up) sometimes seems to unstuck this. Ugly bug.

I also want to add that I am experiencing this error on a Late 2013 13" 2.6/500/16.

I reinstalled Osx a few days ago in an attempt to fix this problem by avoiding installing drivers for peripherals like my xbox360 controller and mouse utilities. My friend had just plugged in his Experia Android phone into my laptop's right side usb port to charge and it took out my laptop's KB and Trackpad. The android file transfer tool I use for my MotoX came up ( not sure if it may be a part of the issue.) To remedy the problem I usually have to plug in peripherals and take them out and on the first try my WD Passport Usb3 fixed the problem and after it was recongized and the partitions mounted I got the KB and Trackpad back.

The error I got was the one posted by the OP as well as a few others.

After some more research I have found that the Android File Transfer tool tends to kill the usb stack when peripherals are plugged in. If you have it installed, try the guide here to keep the agent from runnning. It is what causes the problem, and its only purpose is to load the Tool automatically when an Android device is plugged in. Which in my opinion is very annoying when plugging in to charge.

Mar 27, 2014 4:24 AM in response to Sirako5

I have the same problem with my late 2013 15" rMBP. I can't understand why 13" EFI was updated to 1.3 and 15" is still at 1.2.

This thing is proving to be much less reliable than my trusty '11 17" MBP.

Crashes while slepping (seems to be fixed in 10.9.2), suddenly loosing all means of input and having to perform a hard reboot without any hope of saving ongoing work... 😠

Sorry, but for all of this I migh as well have got a Windows laptop. 😟

Apr 4, 2014 3:35 AM in response to Sirako5

Same crap here with late 2013 15" retina.

I was actually sure that this only happens when i connect my external display, but since i always connect both the external display AND the usb HUB of the display to the left USB port i guess i can't be sure which one of them causing the issue.

I did have android file transfer installed and just now removed it but i am quite sure the problem was happening before i installed it too.

This is seriously ****** up, i bought a MAC to forget about all this b.s problems, instead i got this, the wifi reconnect back from sleep bug..

Annoying as ****..

Apr 4, 2014 9:32 AM in response to mfractalmpb

Give it some time, as long as you properly removed AFT and reinstalled (AFT) properly you should not have the problem again. I was very bummed that I was having this issue, but the same thing would happen on any other computer or OS if a program you used and installed was improperly handling usb.

I was going to say at least it wouldn't straight to bluescreen like Windows, but I feel like it it would be able to tell better what was running or what had just ran to cause the problem. With this I was scratching my head until I resintalled and wrote down each application that accesses usb. Then I found out people had already figured out the issue....
