Frame rate issue with Geforce 750m on late-2013 15" MBP models

I am seeing atrocious frame rate issues running Half Life 2 on my new Retina MacBook Pro 15" (Late 2013) with the dedicated Geforce 750m. Most of the time, the frame rate is perfect, as you would expect, but in some areas, it drops so low as to render the game unplayable. Turning down all the graphic settings in the game barely helps, it still remains choppy.

The weird thing is that using the gfxCardStatus tool and choosing the "Integrated-Only mode" seems to solve the issue, which makes no sense in my mind. Why would the integrated graphics have better performance than the dedicated card?

This is extremely disconcerting for such an expensive machine running a game that is almost 10 years old.

Processor 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7

Memory 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

Graphics NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 2048 MB

All updates are installed, including the MacBook Pro Retina EFI Update 1.2.

Just got a refurbished 15 MBP with exactly the same specs as yours from apple website (July 2014 edition per apple). Get colored pixelated patches on certain flash intensive websites while running on the discrete card (NVIDIA 750M). Running yosemite 10.10.1. Was thinking about taking it back to the store for a refund or new motherboard but after reading this thread thinking the problem is not specific to my machine...

i have the same laptop, similar problems.using yosemite 10.10.3 I tracked down similar issues that this is related to the graphics card.It is even worser in yosemite, most of the time even video playback etc. is not usable. when I use gfx switch and I change to intel card (which meant to be slower) works faster. there is definitely an issue with the drivers/ hardware with this card.

Same issue here.

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014) / 2.5 GHz Intel Core i7 running on Yosemite 10.10.2.

Everything becomes so sluggish (even simple animations in basic apps like Mission Control, or fairly simple animations in WebGL..), when it's running on NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 2048 MB. Integrated Intel Iris Pro is working without problems. The main problem is that I'm using Thunderbolt display which forces dedicated gpu, but even if I am able to use only Intel Iris card, I don't want to do that, because one of the main reasons why I have actually bought this MBP is because of dedicated graphic card.

I can't believe that this issue hasn't been resolved for almost 2 years?!

Wow. Seems nvidia chips can't be trusted. This is the same failure as those from mid-2010 onwards... So in five years + a number of court cases, the build quality of MacBook Pros is still in question. As this is the only MacBook with switchable gpu's I expect it to be the last... I don't think Apple can continue with nvidia. Also this thread has made me stop handing over another £2k for hardware that might not even last two years. Sorry that you all have this issue, it is incredibly frustrating.
