Preview - Actual size is wrong

I use Preview to check images. Until Mavericks, showing a picture in actual size worked.

Now, when I open a picture in Maverick in actual size, the picture is enlarged (I have a retina display), I have to zoom out to see in in actual size.

What's wrong?

Hi, I have the same problem on my late 2013 MacBook Pro. When I view images in Preview their "Actual Size" appears to be pixel-doubled (as they would appear on a non-retina screen). I am not sure if this is intended behaviour or not but here is an interesting find: if you take a screenshot and view it in Preview it is displayed as expected (one image pixel is mapped to one device pixel). There seems to be an extended attribute called com.apple.metadata:kMDItemIsScreenCapture that triggers this. You can force the screen capture behaviour on any image by doing the following:

  1. Set the image's resolution to 144 ppi (without rescaling);
  2. in Terminal type `xattr -wx com.apple.metadata:kMDItemIsScreenCapture 62706c6973743030090800000000000001010000000000000001000000000000000000000000000 00009 <image.jpg>`, replacing <image.jpg> with the appropriate file name.

Yes. Same problem, changing the preference in Preview does not help. The issue is with the dpi setting stored in the JPEG image's EXIF data. If the image is set to 72 dpi, then it opens at full size. If the same image (same image data) is set to 144 dpi, then it opens in Preview at one-quarter size (1/2 height x 1/2 width). The "1 image pixel = 1 screen pixel" setting is not being honored.

If the image is 1000x1000 pixels, then I want Preview to open it and use 1000x1000 screen pixels, regardless of the DPI setting of the image, which is really only relevant for printing. Preview is not honoring this setting on OS X 10.11.3.
