Mavericks Mail not sync'ing IMAP act. (Not GMail)

I have been waiting silently to see if a fix would come on its own, but none yet. Ever since upgrading to Mavericks, Mail.app does NOT sync my IMAP accounts correctly. I have gone so far as to remove and re-add the accounts numerous times... no change. The recent "update" that was supposed to address Gmail issues had no affect on my sync'ing issues either. As others have posted, I basically have to quit and re-launch mail for it to correctly show what is on the mail server. All of my iDevices are working just fine - I can read or move an email, and all my iDevices show it correctly... but when I return to my Mac - some show as unread - some messages that I moved or deleted are still THERE (unread), etc.

Once I quit and relaunch, the inbox displays correctly - but there is no way (that I can find) to force the inbox to "refresh" correctly while the app is open. "Getting new" messages does nothing to help. Has anyone found a solution or work-around...? or is this just a "sit back and wait for Apple to fix" kind of problem...?

Thanks,

SF

Mail is not connecting to the server after OS X Mavericks update. Meanwhile the same setting is working from Ipad, Iphone and even in windows mail. We have an exclusive mail server in our office. Connecting to mail server is easy only on the same server network with the same setting only by changing the server local address, but not working by the server IP from the internet.

Updated my MacBook Pro OS to 10.9.2 yesterday, hoping it would make this problem go away. It did not.

The release update notes ( http://support.apple.com/kb/HT6114 ) say this about mail -- so it looks like they at least tried.

"

  • Includes general improvements to the stability and compatibility of Mail
  • Improves the accuracy of unread counts in Mail
  • Resolves an issue that prevented Mail from receiving new messages from certain providers "

It would be nice if the elaborated on "certain providers" -- like just gmail? or all IMAP?

Searched online and found this thread. Read the whole thing. I share the OP's reservations about any solution that involves deleting everything related to mail on my computer, since a lot of it was copied over from a previous computer and is a treasure trove of (searchable) personal history that would be terrible to lose.

In my case I have just one IMAP account configured. It is not gmail.

Never turned on the mac firewall.

No antivirus or incompatible apps.

Rebuilt the mailbox. That didn't help.

Synchronized. Same story.

Checked disk permissions and none were related to mail. Repaired them anyway since it was harmless. Nothing improved with mail.

Checking the same account with my other devices or webmail shows that the mail server is indeed functional.

Trying to keep up with my email on the MacBook Pro however is very frustrating.

I did just send in feedback. Had to laugh that the form they give you has a dropdown list that asks you to select which operating system version you are using and 10.9.2 isn't an option yet. So I picked 10.9.1 and pointed that out in the comment section.

I have been appaled at the performance of Apple and the inability of Apple Mail on my Mac to keep in sync with what happens on my iPad and iPhone. So much so that I abandoned Mail 2 months ago and used Airmail on the Mac. This solved the syncing problems immediatly. (But Airmail is slightly different, and I know some useres didn't get on with it).

When Bob (bob4aplz1) announced he was impressed with the 10.9.2 pre-release, I took notice. And I downloaded it expecting all the problems to be fixed, and they were not. But then I re-read Bob's posts and went back and did 2 things (on my 3 Gmail IMAP accounts):

1. Went into Gmail and unchecked the 'all mail' IMAP box (why? I have no idea. It's what Bob reported)

2. Rebuilt the mailboxes on all 3 accounts

In conjunction with 10.9.2 this solved my problems and Mail now keeps in perfect sync with iPad, iPhone and Airmail. After a few days I have switched back to using Mail as my prime email client.

I have no idea what 'all mail' does or doesn't do, and by unchecking the 'all mail' IMAP box I am not 'missing anything' - and its all working fine.

(I'm keeping Airmail in the wings in case it all goes wrong - but for now, and for about a week, its been fine).

Hope this helps.

The 'All Mail' folder contains all of the emails sent or received by the Gmail account it is in, this is in addition to any other label the email may have (Inbox, Sent etc)

This, in turn, prevents me from archiving messages.

They are already stored in the Archive/All Mail folder, adding another copy (by manually archiving) is a duplication. This applies to Gmail and Google Apps accounts.

Perhaps I didn't explain the problem properly... forgive me.

When I have a message in my inbox, I need to get it out of there somehow.

I used to do this by moving the mail to the 'All Mail' forlder, which - when I untick it in Gmail Settings is gone, as it should.

That being said: when it's gone, where do I put the messages I wish to remove from my inbox?

The 'Archive' button I can manually install doesn't do the trick and gives me an error-message, as the mailbox it should push it to is non-extistant as we opted out from having it no our list.

The 'All Mail' mailbox is not there entirely, so how do I get my mail from my inbox to the Archive?

Mar 1, 2014 10:46 AM in response to Lars Hilse

First, I don't want to take credit for getting rid of the All Mail showing up in Mail...that was another very astute person earlier on this thread. But it works so why not.

As for the issue of what to do with emails, I delete the ones I don't care about, knowing that I can always log onto Gmail and find them forever. I put the ones I want in specific folders for work, or travel, or taxes, or whatever in the On My Mac section. Kind of forces you to weed them out now instead of keeping everything on your Mac for eternity.

Is Mail working perfectly? No. Is it good enough now compared to before? Yes. I still refresh the Inbox from time to time by either pressing the Get Mail button and/or taking everything offline and then on. I am so used to it now that it is no longer a big deal. A big deal was when nothing seemed to work. That was a nightmare!

Good luck!
