My iPhone 5 is 1.5 years, and my power/sleep button just stopped working. I got the same reply from Genius Bar that replacing the phone for $269 is the only option. I already had to replace the battery for this phone, and why would I want to pay more just to get another crappy 5? iPhone 5 is very disappointing, and I am seriously looking at Samsung Galaxy S5 over iPhone 5S as the replacement. I won't even dare to imagine what issues iPhone 6 will have when they are released later this year...

My iPhone 5 was purchased in December 2012 at the Woodcliiff Lake NJ Apple Store. I purchased one for my wife their too. Each of these had their sleep button start to not work in September/October, and each have degraded to the point that the sleep function is unusable. At my Apple Genius Bar appointment today, I met with Eddie who jumped right into the out of warranty, should've bought Apple Care speech. He offerred the assistive touch hack, and purchasing new phones. When I asked to meet with a manager, I met with Michelle. Michelle offered exactly the same speech. I am extremely disappointed with how Apple is handling this issue.

My nearest Apple Store is a hour and a half from us in Syracuse. So after a 3 hour car ride I sit here with my sons power button broken iPhone. The genius and store manager were very nice to us and showed how to use the accessibility feature to work around the issue. The manager then suggested that we contact Otter box for a warranty claim since we are using their case. This is an Apple issue not Otterbox!

I have enjoyed Apple sine the Macintosh.

Just like my insurance maybe it's time to take a closer look at it and switch. Sometimes companies become complacent and it's up to us consumers to watch out for ourselves.

I had this issue, but after updating to iOS 7.1 a few hours ago, the button functions perfectly on the inner-most end! 🙂 Even with a short, light touch! (I'm not sure whether the outermost end used to work reliably or not.) It was taking a half-dozen presses just before the update.
I still don't get it, but maybe there was a bug where the OS wasn't polling that button continuously.

Lock/sleep button stopped working after 13 months (1month out of warranty) This too was shortly after the IOS7 update. The button worked in a special spot that only I could locate, as of last week it stopped working at all (something to look forward to for those who's buttons still work in one place) The charging port continues to cause issues not recognizing accessories sold by apple themselves including the apple cord. Woke up today to find that my flashlight icon will no longer work. I have always had a case, screen protector, and I take great care of all my electronics as they are extremely expensive. This is unacceptable as so many people have had the exact same problem just after their warranty expired. Apple is no help at all and has disgusted me with their excuses. This is a hardware issue and Apple's reputation and repeat customer service disasters will cost them loads of business in the future. Keep up the good work Apple.

THIS IS NOT A HARDWARE ISSUE.

I'm not saying there aren't iPhone 5's with faulty buttons, but the issue I have, which is similar to most, is not hardware, it is absolutely a software issue and Apple needs to get on it. I am an Apple die hard. All laptops, phones, network hardware, even video rental are Apple in my home. I love my iPhone but this needs to get fixed now as even I am wavering on my belief in the product!

Mine, like others never had an issue under IOS 6.x...immediately after the upgrade problems started.

Beyond that, the button can be hit numerous times with exactly the same pressure and will work 30% of the time. The fact that it works at all nearly eliminates physical issues, but I can understand that the problem could be erratic. However, in order to be erratic you would need to do things differently in order to jiggle a loose connection, contact, etc. I have noticed greater responsiveness depending on current screen showing. Also pointing to software. Someone covered up a trap for the button push event and depending on background process running it may/may not respond. It's pretty obvious when you start troubleshooting it. More pressure does not make it work better, where you push, etc. get a senior deb on this and get it fixed as this is the type persistent, dull, toothache that will cause the abandoning of the device. It's bad....

Worst part of this? The $25 part can be fixed at Apple for $285 with tax for the flat-rate repair/swap. I suffered a similar disproportionate expense when I took my iPhone 4 in for a failed microphone—$150. Extended warranties from the most reasonable and reliable source you can find would be my advice going forward. Those credit-cards that extend warranties can be a real benefit if you can manage the paper work in submitting your claim. I'd much rather see a realistic warranty length or reliability improvements instead however.
