I returned my iPad Air for the very same reason..that I got for Christmas...no point in buying a Mercedes if it breaks down on the road just a month out of warranty.

Mercedes backs every new car it sells with lifetime road side assistance...with sheer confidence that their cars will seldom suffer a complete break down on the road.

Too bad, can't say that of Apple..their iPhone 5 is not only a defective product that is causing not one, but several break downs, they are neither refusing to acknowledge nor standing behind it either..

Same problem as everyone else, power button suddenly stopped working like it did. Will only work on the left side and now its taking a few trys for it to work on that side too. Soon by the sounds of things from everyone the button is just going to quit working all together. I have been a huge apple fan as well like so many others, and have also convinced family and friends to go with apple products. If you want to keep your business a successful one, make your customers happy and put out a recall on these phones already.

Exact same problem here as well.

My iPhone 5's sleep button started being pretty much unusable for no apparent reason.

If I push hard on the left side it works, but pushing with normal pressure or on the right side never works.

I'm out of warranty too 😟.

Seeing as everyone is having the exact same problem, always with the right side failing, this seems to be a design issue that I hope Apple will address.

Same thing as everyone in this community, Apple should recall, for this 700$ phone.

And those genius guys who come with their solution like using the assertive button, give me a break 700$ phone and after a year warranty it will brake, really!!!

I will never buy something from Apple again if this customer service is like that.

I found a petition online for that very problem, you should signed it.

iPhone 5 - Power Button Defect

iphone5recall.com

This petition is regarding the defect on iPhone 5 power button which wears out in about 13-14 months of usage just after you go out of warranty. Apple is aware of this issue but chooses not to accept this as a defect. Affected users have to pay $269 USD or equivalent in other currencies to replace t…

My iPhone 5 power button stopped working within a month after I was out of warranty. I'm not even going to try to go to the apple store I know it'll be an expensive fix. They should def. fix this problem if so many people complain. Or else it seems like they built the phones this way on purpose?? So we would have to go out and buy 5s for our own sanity. Luckily I'm pretty patient so far...

Same here. Noticed the problem last month but only experienced the inconvenience when I went for a holiday last week. The power button is not working. And I can't also take photo using the power button and home button at the same time. My wife has an iphone 4s and her phone's power and home buttons are still working ok.

I agree. This is something that Apple knows already. As a responsible company, they should go for a recall for this kind of product issues. I'm one of the beneficiary of their iMac 2009 recall done last year. I'd expect they will do the same for this iPhone 5 issue. It might be too expensive to replace the phone. Am ok if they offer free fixing for this issue.

I have had the same problem with the power button on my iPhone 5 not working. After I was told by Apple that the only thing they could do for me is offer me a "factory refurbished" iPhone 5 at a cost of $280.00 (to replace the one I own with the faulty power button), I went to a reputable cell phone repair company in my area and asked them to replace my faulty power button. The technician quoted me $45.00 with the caviat that replacing the button may not resolve my problem because it most likely was due to a software problem and not a hardware problem... He said 99.9% of his customers who come in with this same exact iPhone 5 problem leave his workshop without the problem being fixed because it was due to a software problem and not a hardware problem. I asked him to proceed with the installation of the power button at $45.00 and sure enough, he was right. the problem was not resolved. As I left his shop, another customer came in to the same problem...

Graham. Manchester UK.

This problem seems to be the Classic one: (Goods not fit for the purpose intended for), you don’t need to be an LA Lawyer to get the Judge on your side with this one, bear in mind over 78% of iPhone users don’t use any forum to communicate a problem like this, so it is Larger than you might think!.

But how does a layman pursue a problem they may have with Apple through the Site well that’s another story, as here in the UK, the following Website Legal Requirements need to apply – Company Information:

For a registered business, the website needs to display the business name, place of registration, registered number, its registered office address in the Country it is trading in and if it is being wound up.

the company’s web sites must show in legible lettering –

  • its place of registration
  • registered number
  • its registered office address
  • and if it is being wound up, that fact

I couldn’t seem to find much of the above anywhere, let me say one more thing, I am a great fan of their products now, my Family having 10 IPhones & Pads in total.

I will make a promise to all you fine people: If Moderators leave this POST! Then it’s up to the next Guy to pursue, however! If it’s removed, I will take steps to resolve my same problem you all seem to have with the Power button in a (UK) Court.

My iPhone is only 14 monts old (2 monts after warranty) and Power Button works only on left side (yet) - I'm afraid it stops working completely: (The problem started about a week ago: (

It makes me upset. It's an expensive phone but very poor quality.

I think it is a hardware problem - no software I still use IOS 6 and I have this problem too, and people with IOS 7 have the same problem.

I live in Dubai, the phone was purchased on-line directly from apple.com / ae

Does anybody have experience - if repair - replacement flex cable really help?

Purchased iPhone 5 all out $800. Phone is now 1 year and 5 months old. Never dropped the phone. Always careful in use. Top button stopped working 3 months out of warranty . . . of course. Went to local Apple Store and talked to genius and genius manager about this problem. Apparently nothing can be done to fix the problem other than to buy a new phone. That is ridiculous after paying $800. I feel ripped off . . .
