I have the same problem, 13 month old iphone 5 power button was not responsive last month, and I had it fixed last week, worked perfect on ios6. After I upgrading my system to ios7.0.4 yesterday, it started being not responsive.
My power button is now completely non functional and about 14 months old. My concern is what happens if my phone runs out of battery. Is there a way to turn it in using iTunes?
Yes, you can just put it on the charger (when fully discharged) and it will automatically turn on.
I am also facing the same problem... I must admit that this did happen since my upgrade however then again I am in my 13 or 14 month
My 14 month old iPhone 5 (with latest software), just started stuffing up tonight with the sleep button. Hope it's resolved soon! Phone has been working perfectly up until now.
As I said before, it's a hardware problem (the failure of the Audio Control and Power Button Cable), it will never be resolved by Apple because the failure rate is apparently too low for them to admit it as a manufacturing defect. I'm afraid you'll have to look up a repair service and have the flex cable replaced.
I do have the same issue after 14 months now. My iPhone 5 power button does not work at all and I use the assitive touch to turn it off. Very annoying. I was told I have to pay $269 to get this fixed at Apple Store but I won't do that. I am very upset at Apple to not standing behind this. In searching this I also found a website that people are talking about this http://iphone5recall.com not sure how legit it is but sounds like a good idea to see how big the issue is.
Also experiencing this issue. Signed the petition mentioned in the previous post by OnyxMan . Hopefully Apple will begin to take notice of this very prominent and wide-spread issue and begin replacing their defective units. One of the primary reasons I've picked Apple products in the past is their excellent warranty and customer service. This time around has soured me though as the Genius Bar refuses to do anything about it besides charge me $269 to fix it, even though the issue began while my phone was under warranty.
Good Afternoon
i´ve been in Uk last year, i went to apple store to buy an iphone, my family already knows apple products and owns a lot of them. I asked to the seller it my phone would work properly in Brazil, cause i was in exchange, i also asked if the phone would have guarantee in my country like the others products of apple does. The seller gave me one model of iphone that doesn´t have here in Brazil, And now my phone is having a problem in the turn off button, i decided to look for help in the site, and for my surprise there were plenty of complainings about this same problem, and it all started after the IOS 7.0.4 was Uploaded, and i also read something really interesting, apple is not seeling the iphone 5 anymore but still sells the 4s, so that means that the iphone 5 gave them so many problems that they do not manage to solve and they decided to stop seeling it. APPLE NEEDS TO TAKE A POSITION, TO SOLVE PEOPLE PROBLEMS, cause we do not pay $100 or something like that, their products are very expensive and they need to make it worth their prices
i want to say that
Same problem here, 2 weeks past the warranty and told the phone not reparible and $269 for a replacement. The Genius bar guy was sympathetic and sort of acknowledged that this was a common iPhone5 problem. I will contact my credit card company as I do have extended warranty with them. Maybe if they get enough of these claims they can pressure Apple to stand behind this obvious defect. I always praised Apple that yes, thier products were expensive, but they were quality and they stand behind them. Shame on Apple for this issue.
Report: three weeks after the problem occured (only the left side of the power button worked) I can officially say that the button does not work at all, according perfectly to other's experiences. I had to turn Assistive Touch on, because in this state the phone was unusable. I never had any other mobile phone in my entire life that showed such serious malfunction a year after I bought it. I suggest everyone to check out the other thread about this issue. Things don't look better there either, but that particular thread was already viewed by almost 90 000 people at least. The number of the people having this problem are raising rapidly. Let's see if this grows into an undeniable worldwide scandal in the next few months.
I also started having this issue right around month 13- conveniently just out of warranty. After reading the replies I found that if you press the left side of the button, I can sometimes get it to work. For such an expensive phone, this is really unacceptable. If these issues continue without support from Apple, I can't see myself sticking with them in the future. In addition to this issue, I also have the battery failing at 13 months as well. Visit to Genius bar resulted in this response- "I'm sorry, your warranty just ran out." Awesome.
I have updated to 7.0.4 and the problem started. My phone has 14 months of usage. I am not able to power off/reset the iphone 5 either.
My power button started to only work on the left side when the phone was 14 months old. I made a trip to the "genius bar" where I was told there was nothing they could do since it was out of warranty except charge e $269. Per the "Genius" I should have bought apple care. I did ask the "genius" Why would I buy apple care for my iPhone 5 when I have never needed it for my iPhone's, iPad's, iMac or MacBook Pros since apple is a superior product? The "genius" didn't know what to say. I then pointed out i still have an iPhone 3 and 4 that work fine and wasn't about to pay $269 for a refurbished phone when i paid $299 a year ago for a new phone. I took my phone to an iPhone repair store it cost $70 to repair the power button cable. According to the repair store they see the power button broken a lot on the 4S and 5. He said it's because the piece under the button is plastic and breaks easily. I'm happy my phone is functioning properly now but still irritated that apple is aware there's an issue but doesn't want to address it. They would rather blame the customer for not buying apple care.
Sad to see Apple's quality and customer service are changing.
The button is officially dead on my phone. I can't restart my phone at all. I've been using the assistive touch to put the phone on standby but there is NO WAY to restart this phone. Apple does not bother with their garbage quality toy. I feel sorry for myself. Goodbye Apple. No more buying anything from you anymore. I returned my iPad mini which was a Christmas gift in the fear that it will have the same problem...
