Reset the phone (no data loss): press both the home and power buttons for up to 1 minute, releasing when the Apple logo appears.

Restart the device by holding the home and power buttons at the same time for up to 10 seconds until the Apple logo appears. You will not lose anything.

Same thing's happening to me. The screen Is staying black every time I reset it but I'm getting messages and it's charging.

I have the same problem. This has happened twice but the first time it was stuck on a dim screen. But know I will be in an app or icon and it will go to black. It is so annoying that now whenever i unlock it, it immediately goes to black and now it will not come back on no matter what I do. The home+lock button thing doesnt work for it. But it is still on and rings but doesnt light up. I need HELP just like you! 😕

My screen blacked out after I dropped it and I'm still getting notifications and siri is still working. I tried holding the lock screen and home button, but it just restarts and the apple logo does not show... please help i'm desperate

I had to go to the apple genius bar and pay the money for them to figure it out. I guess something was damaged due to dropping it. I have had hard plastic cases on my iphones, but I guess that wasn't enough. The guy at the genius bar suggested a more "robust case". I walked away with an OtterBox Case. It's true that you loose a little bit of the sexy natural feel of the phone with an OtterBox, but I just don't have the funds to pay for fixing my phone every year or two.

Thank you very much. I am using a six year old (give or take...) iPhone 4 and really thought I'd have to switch to android in my search for a small phone now. I mean, it would not be unreasonable, but I have small hands and prefer the iPhone 4's size even over that of the iPhone 5's. I had the same thing. I tried all kinds of things but what worked is hold down both buttons until the apple screen appears. I was headed to the repair place and tried it. I did not time it but it was a long time like 10-30 seconds.

The same thing happened to me but my problem is that my top button is broken so I can't turn it off without usig the little dot thing on the screen... I don't know what to do..

Take the device in for repair because without that button you cannot reset your device using just the device. You could try connecting to iTunes and restoring your device as a new device.

I also had the same problem, found this reply after a simple Google search, and it also worked for me. Thank goodness; probably saved me at least a hundred bucks had I gone to an Apple store in search of repair 😀

Thanks a ton, that worked, and was delighted to see the Apple light come on. For others with the same problem, not sure if these events are related, but I recently updated my IOS, and although it restarted, I never did this full reboot. Also, it went to black right after I plugged the Mophie case, with phone inside it, into a car charger. Just tossing those out to support finding a root cause.

Same problem and also my lock button is broken. I've been sat for the past 4 hours flicking the silent switch on and off hoping the vibration will drain the battery in an attempt to reset the phone. No luck so far.
