iOS 7.0.4 iPhone 5S - crashed after Touch ID finger print unlock

iPhone 5S crashes after fingerprint / Touch ID unlock.

Tried various restores and settings. Finally found that turning REDUCE MOTION [OFF] remedies it. Haven't had it crash in 7.0.4 with this applied.

Turned REDUCE MOTION [ON] and the phone crashes again, as before about 20% of the time in 7.0.4 and 7.0.3

So, until some Genius doesn't just shrug their shoulders but actually does something to make your £630 telephone work as intended, we're going to have live with those awful Motion effects. Yippee.

I've had reduce motion turned off from the start but have still been experiencing this. In my case I have narrowed it down to this:

  • If I press the home button then raise my finger then place on home button again to Touch ID unlock, then I get a reset 50% of the time, or therabouts
  • However, every time I have pressed the home button but have LEFT MY FINGER ON IT to Touch ID unlock, I am yet to have had a reset

As I've read about other random resets while using the phone, it wouild seem that different senarios, for different people, are causing the resets.

Yep, mine does this too, maybe once every ten unlocks. Seems to happen more often when I power on and then put my finger on the reader more quickly than usual. Maybe I'm actually touching the ID sensor twice as the person in this thread mentioned earlier?

Returned the phone to an Apple store and was given a replacement, but after 2 days the new phone started doing the same thing (but less frequently, maybe once in every 30 unlocks). Weird because my wife's 5s has never had this problem--but she doesn't use the Fingerprint ID very often.

One surprise with the replacement--the battery lasts WAY longer! With both phones I had all settings the same, including background refresh (Off) and Reduce Motion (On). Basically I used settings to save batter life and with the first 5s I would get maybe 2 days of charge, but with the replacement I easily get 3 days. Dramatic difference. I don't know what's going on with that but I suspect somebody at Apple does.

For now I'm just living with the annoyance of a Fingerprint ID that crashes my OS once in awhile. Also seems strange that this isn't being reported more when I received two phones and both had the same issue.

Reply from Apple:

I’ve received a response from the iOS engineering team. They informed me that they are seeing increased reports of this behavior with Touch ID and that they’re currently gathering logs and investigating the root cause. The resolution of the investigation may come in the form of an update, a KB article on our support site, or a combination of the two. They state if you see any software updates available to download and install them.

I had a different issue on top of this one and they forced me to wipe the phone entirely and start fresh without a back-up on the same phone. It's working great now, no crashing or freezing and no problems with touch id. It was a real PITA to have to install everything from scratch, and I did lose data from 2 apps that don't save server side or in iCloud, but overall it was a great solution to my troubles. Good luck!
