Thanks Larry, Terence- seems to have done the trick. Iphone is now showing up in Iphoto and Image capture.

Some things I think may have caused this:

I routinely use MacKeeper- I'll be paying close attention if this ever happens again

I also used Iphoto Library Manager to try and delete some duplicates

Thanks so much for your help !

Get rid of that piece of Junk. It provides no service you need and is a waste of your money and time - plus, and I'm quite serious about this - regularly damages Macs.

There is no need for "cleaning", "tuning" or whatever those utilites are. There is simply no reason to routinely use any apps like that at all.

They are just another form of mugging.

I created a new account and the problem is repeated...iPhoto does not recognize the iPhone.

Also, I didn't mention this before, but iTunes does not automatically begin when I plug in the iPhone either, but if I open iTunes, it then recognizes the iPhone and begins backup.

USE THE USB CORD THAT CAME WITH THE PHONE.

I found this solution on another post, and it worked perfectly. Crazy simple, to the point of being annoying that it was even the issue... use the USB cord that came with your iphone to connect the phone to your computer, NOT the cord from an old iphone or ipod. I accidentally used my husband's 4s cord for my 5s iphone, and I got the error over and over. Read the other apple discussion post, walked upstairs to get my 5s cord, and voila, it worked!
