iPhoto and iMovie gone after Mavericks upgrade

I upgraded my MacBook Pro to Mavericks and lost ALL of my applications. I finally have most everything back in order, but iPhoto and iMovie are gone and now the App Store says I need to purchase them.

Why should I have to purchase them when I already own them from the purchase of my MacBook Pro? Getting a free Mavericks upgrade should not cause me to have to spend $30 to get the applications back that I already owned in the first place.

Please help me restore those two applications.

Thanks,

Greg

hi Old Toad, Thanks for the info.

While I am downloading the new iPhoto from the App Store, I found the Applications Installation DVD which came when I pruchased my Mac and installed... the iLife comes back but my old iPhoto is 9.1 and not compat.

A friend told me if I am charged for the new installation, I could try writing App Store for refund. I might try that.

Thanks all for advises.

Don't mind some of those other helpful comments.

The folks at the genius bar just reinstalled Mavericks for me (a complete wipe of the hard drive and OS reinstall following a crash of epic proporttion) and what was missing? iPhoto, iMovie, Garage Band. All gonzo.

Now I suppose it could have been "user error" and "I chose to do that" but the fact is that I didn't choose to do that, and I had no input or involvement in the situation at all. Maybe the folks at the genius bar screwed up, I'm not suggesting that they didn't. And maybe I am responsible for the outcome because I chose to take it to Apple for assistance. Maybe in some universal sense I am responsible for all of the actions that flow from my choices, no matter how tenuous the causality, but I don't think this is a philosophy forum.

Nonetheless, the fact that it happened under those (presumably) controlled circumstances by a professional suggests to me that there is more to this puzzle than a knee-jerk conclusion that you (or I) somehow caused the problem.

But, it shouldn't be surprising that for some folks it is way easier to be caustic and condescending than actually admit that they may not know the answer.

Maybe we should just be happy that we don't have iPhoto, because that thing is a stinking pile of instability.

Good luck Gas Man, good luck.

Am having similiar problems. I did an erase and install of Maverick (SnowL before). iPhoto and iMovie both missing. Got them back from Time Machine and updated both to Lion compatible 9.4 for iPhoto and 9 something for iMovie. Message pops up that more updates available. BUT App store will not recognize my Apple ID and I get the message that this program was bought by different user etc. Then an error box: try later. Going on 2 days.

I had this same problem - I upgraded (not wipe & install) to Mavericks, and iPhoto (and iMovie for what it matters) disappeared. My 7gb iPhoto library file was still there, but there were no corresponding app folders or library folders. Also, it was not listed under purchases nor upgrades.

Anyway, I spoke with Apple techs. After getting one who works with the app store, we tried rebuilding the app store preferences to no avail. He called a group that works with accounts, they made a few adjustments, and viola - iPhoto and iMovie were listed under purchases.

My guess is that some of us who got iLife bundled with our Macs or OS purchases didn't have that reflected under our accounts, so when Mavericks installed, we lost those options. Hopefully a call to the App Store techs will resolve this for you guys as well, those who have exhausted the options in this thread.

PS~ Larry, the reason the OP got on your case is because you automatically accused him of screwing up his computer himself and being dishonest about his problem, when in fact he was being honest and Mavericks & the app store account system are the likely culprit. It's just a strange kind of passive aggressiveness where you essentially call him incompetent while pretending to help him. I understand that you took offense to him calling you a jerk, but I hope you also understand there's no innocent party between the two of you.

I had the same problem as OP, and I was very confused after my Mavericks install. Your responses to OP were unnecessarily rude. Reading this thread was frustrating as well, because there was no helpful answer until I got to Hobocharlie15's post, which explained that all you had to do was go to app store, login, and click the purchases tab and re-download all the apps for free. This solved my problem, and I am very grateful! Thank you HoboCharlie15!
