I cannot get the video to fit in the imove screen. It crops the heads off of people. I have tried to fix it by adjusting the center so it will chop their feet off, but that isn't working. I am taking video that I took from my camera of my my friends birthday and trying to put it in imove. It is a disaster! Can anyone help me?

What is the resolution of your original footage?
You can't really increase the resolution of footage that doesn't have it to begin with.

It's a 640x480 file, but iMovie doesn't have that option when I go to export. The clip's going on Youtube, and if you watch it on a 4:3 monitor, expect to see windowboxing. I don't want that.

I don't see anything like what you're showing. When I go to crop, I don't see any black bars alongside my 4:3 video. I just see the video squished to 16:9. There's no place to pull the bars to.
It is also worth exploring whether you have Image Stabilization on and applied automatically. Image Stabilization works by zooming in. If you turn it off, you may be able to see the heads.

I stablised the video. Can't find an option to find people. There are no people in my video anyway.

From what I've seen, you can only create a 4:3 video in the old iMovie. iMovie 10 forces you to use a 16:9 aspect ratio. There's no choice.
