iCloud showing up twice in contacts

I have googled this topic and found that people have stated that they have seen this issue in the Notes application; however, I am seeing my iCloud account showing up twice in Contacts. My contacts are not being duplicated and if I mark either of the iCloud accounts as inactive then all of my contacts disappear. Can anybody tell me how to get rid of the duplicate iCloud account in Contacts? And I do not have 2 iCloud accounts showing up in accounts, just my 1 iCloud account...also, this is a fresh install of OSX Mavericks.

Mac mini, OS X Mavericks (10.9)

Hmmm. I read through this thread but don't see my particular situation reflected.

In System Preferences, listed once under Internet Accounts, I have my iCloud account associated with my Contacts. For this account I have "Contacts" checked. Also in the System Preferences/iCloud tab this account is listed and "Contacts" checked.

(NOTE: there are three iCloud accounts show above, but only the first is my main Apple ID, and the only one that has "Contacts" checked. The other two, as noted below each, are associated only with Mail.)

But in the Contacts App, under Preferences/Accounts, I show TWO listings for this iCloud account, both with the same Apple ID. One is enabled and the other is marked "Inactive." I can not delete this extra iCloud account from the Contact app Preferences. If I attempt to do so, it refers me to System Preferences/Internet Accounts and points me to the singular Apple ID.

All my contacts are syncing correctly and listed in the Contacts applications on OSX 10.9.5 & iOS 7.1.2. There are no duplicates. The only issue is this double listing in the Preferences for the Contacts App. If I enable this redundant iCloud account in the Contact App preferences, I do get duplicates. As such I leave it "inactive."

How do I get rid of this extra account listing that only shows up in the Contact app Preferences? I have tried the solutions listed here, but the extra account remains.

Thanks in advance!

"I had very similar issue to what you seem to be describing. iCloud contacts groups were showing up twice on my computer. I solved this by opening up the accounts window and unchecked the sync iCloud contacts checkbox. I then hit delete contacts locally. One of the groups still remained when I did this, so I repeated the process. After all the iCloud contacts were gone, I rechecked the box and everything resynced and it seems that everything is now working as it should."

That solution is not working for me on my iMac. In Contacts preferences I see two "iClouds" accounts. When I try to delete one of them, it tells me to go to Internet Accounts. When I uncheck "Contacts" in Internet Accounts, one of the two sets of groups disappears but one remains, and I am not given the option of deleting local contacts. Same thing on my MacBook. I don't want to leave the system that way because then contacts will not sync across iCloud. Puzzled.

Have the same problem with a fresh version of El Capitan.

But the suggestion with unchecking contacts in the preferences isn't really working for me. Unchecking contacts in preferences removes one iCloud entry in contacts. The second entry is still existent though contacts in preferences is still unchecked. Closing and reopening contacts removes the other iCloud entry. If I now activate contacts in the preferences with contacts being open, one iCloud entry occurs. But after closing and reopening contacts once more, there are again two iCloud entries.

By now this problem is really frustrating - feels more like Windows than Mac...

EDIT:

Rebooting the system in between doen't help. And I also don't get asked if I want to save the contacts locally after unchecking contacts in the preferences.

Hi there. I know this is from a couple years ago, but you seem to have found the answer - but I don't quite understand the fix. I turn off contacts in iCloud ... and my duplicate listing of contacts goes. I turn it back on again, I only have one. I close down contacts, and reopen ... and I'm back with two. Very frustrating. Only have duplicates on my MacBook Pro - not my iMac, iPhone or iPad.

I don't understand the "then hit delete contacts locally" part. Could you please elaborate?

I just upgraded to MacOS X Sierra, FYI. But had the problem on all previous versions of OS.

Thanks again.
