David,

Below is a question I posted earlier today on

Apple Support Communities > Desktop Computers > iMac (Intel) > Discussions

I hope it is not out of order for me to paste it here, in the hope that you can help me sort the problem. Many thanks Angela

Every time I booted up my imac, I kept getting a message asking me to allow or deny access to Event Manager and it was a nuisance.

I found out that this is sometihng to do with Epson.

I tried to stop it in Firewall, but couldn't so I searched for an answer and a suggestion came up

[from this Support Community, https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5593713]

which said I should drag the Event manger folder to the trash. It said that I would easily be able to downlaod it if I needed it.

So, I dragged Event Manager to the trash and then found that my Epson XP-605 won't scan without it.

I went to Epson and downloaded it, but when I tried to install it I got the message:

"Epson Event Manager.pkg" can't be opened because it is from an unidentified developer.

Epson Event Manager.pkg is on the disk image "epson374632eu.dmg". Safari downloaded this disk image at 16.18 from www.espon.co.uk

I'm afraid I have no idea what to do next. All suggestions most welcome. Thanks.

But how do I PERMANENTLY permit it in the iMAC firewall ? If the iMAC has no way of doing this does iMAC use ipfw in BSD so I can do it there ? The problem is that clicking yes puts it in the iMAC firewall but when I reboot the popup comes back again, meaning it is not permanently in it.

I've not tried this, as I'm not sure it's a good idea to become an app signer myself, but the article does give some insight as to the nature of the problem, specifically that, since this piece of Epson software may not be "signed," the firewall continues to give the alert even though EEventManager already has permission to accept incoming connections (as listed in the firewall settings).

There seems to be a problem with how the Epson Event Manager application verifies its own integrity, which makes it constantly present itself in that Allow/Deny firewall dialog. If you're willing to do without the ability to scan documents by simply pressing Scan on the Epson printer (the alternative is to scan from within an app such as Preview), then you can use the Epson Uninstall app to remove the Event Manager from your system. You can always the Event Manager later using the EPSON Software Updater app. The Uninstall and Updater apps come with the Epson printer software. I ended up simply removing the Epson Event Manager application and now I no longer get the repeated Deny/Allow dialogs.

After a number of calls to Epson I got a tech which sent the info up stairs for an developer to look at. I called corporate office a few moments ago and spoke to an upper management person who checked to see the status and it is under review. The problem is is that the EEventManager.app is not signed by Epson so it is considered by the Apple firewall as hostel hence the asking the question to allow permission. They will call me with an answer and also email me. Hopefully soon.

I heard from Epson and here is what they said. It is good news.

Hello Joel,

Thank you for bringing this issue to our attention!

We have confirmed your findings, it appears that the overall Event Manager package file is signed OK, but not the EEventManager.app sub app as you have called out..

We are trying to see if we can resolve it locally here in our Corp HQ, if not we will need to report back to our software engineers at the Parent Co. in Japan and it will take a little more time to resolve.

In the meantime , please either continue to click "Allow" to allow the app to run, or remove the EEventManager.app exception from the firewall list.

Note if you remove the exception or deny the exception then the scanners control panel push buttons may not work properly.

Thanks for your patience while we look to resolve the issue.

Very Best Regards,

Tony C.

Here you go!

Hi Joel,

Please install this new signed version of the Event Manager, and reboot.

https://ftp.epson.com/download/EEM_25109.dmg

You can install on top of existing EM , or if you feel more comfortable removing existing version first , then please use this Uninstaller v1.25 utility

10/23/13 1.1 MB epson15662.dmg , Description: This file contains the Epson Uninstaller Utility v1.25.

This utility is posted under the Epson WorkForce WF-3540 All-in-One Printer

Installation instructions:

Download the file.

Double-click the downloaded file to create a disk image on your desktop.

Open the disk image.

Double-click the installer icon to begin the installation.

Open the Uninstaller utility and check the box to remove Event Manager, then reboot and install the newer version, reboot again.

Compatible Systems: Mac OS X (v10.9.x), Mac OS X (v10.8.x), Mac OS X (v10.7.x), Mac OS X (v10.6.x), Mac OS X (v10.5.8)

http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/support/SupportDownloading.jsp?BV_UseBVCookie =yes&licenseoid=17774&download=https%3a%2f%2fftp.epson.com%2fdrivers%2fepson1566 2.dmg&pn=Epson+WorkForce+WF-3540&pc=Epson+WorkForce%26%230174%3b+Series&ft=Utili ties&returnpage=%2fsupport%2fsupDetail.jsp&returnparams=%26infoType%3dDownloads% 26oid%3d209704%26platform%3dOSF_M_X9%26detected%3dNo

During the install of Event Manager you will not be prompted to add or allow the EEventManager.app utility into the firewall exception list, as you were with the previous version, but you must reboot for it to show up.

Going forward , You should no longer be prompted to Allow or deny the EEventManager.app utility into the firewall exception list.

If you could kindly reply back and let us know if this resolves the issues for you.

At this time the new signed Event Manager is only on our FTP site, we will eventually post it and replace the currently posted version.

Thank you again for your patience and understanding in this matter.

Very Best Regards,

Tony C.

Joel,

Generous thanks for pursuing this with Epson. It works perfectly scanning from the Epson 3540 to my iMac using the buttons on the Epson instead of the other direction using the Scan application.

I noticed when I rebooted that a screen flashed by -- so quickly that I could not even see content -- which may have been a remnant of the screen that popped up with the previous EEvent Manager software. I have not rebooted since then to find out whether it happens again. Nevertheless, this is fixed as far as I can see.

Thanks, of course, also to Tony C at Epson.

I have rebooted a few times, but my iMac has lots of RAM and a high speed processor so maybe I missed it, But at 66 my eyes aren't what they were before. Years back when I was in the PC industry I would have laughted if someone would say I would be working with Mac computers. But now I have 2 iMac's one Mini one MacBook Pro, a iPad and an iPhone. What a difference.

Hooray! Tony C, I followed your instructions and the problem seems to have been solved. 🙂 It didn't work for me until I uninstalled the old version of EM software, but once I took the old version out and installed the new one, everything worked perfectly. Thank you for taking the time to address the issue. I'm relieved not to have to deal with the nuisance of this pop up every day.

Joel, I especially thank YOU for figuring out what needed to be fixed and pursuing the matter with Epson.

How do I give you and Tony C. each 10 points for solving the problem?

You are absolutely right. I just tashed the app from the epson scanner sofware folder & no more alerts.

Thanks

Unless you have gotten rid of your Epson all-in-one or scanner you will eventually miss this app quite painfully. The event manager is how you set up scanning to your Mac, to email, to PDF, to memory. You use the event manager to determine where your scans will transfer to if sent to the computer. If you are still actively using your Epson scanner I would recommend against trashing the even manager app and allowing it to do its thing.

Works for me just overwriting. Thanks from me too. It has been satisfying to persue and issue and find a thread with this kind of problem solving attention. Coming in to Mac from PC I am finding such a lot of software issues because of the proprietorial nature of Apple.
