Possible to Show Ethernet Status in Menu Bar?

I remember in Snow Leopard, I could see the ethernet status up in the gray menu bar to the left of the clock along with the wi-fi, bluetooth, etc status but for whatever reason I'm not seeing the ethernet status. Is that normal/expected? Is it possible to get it to show up?

Late to answer but still for those landing here looking for a Ethernet connectivity status icon in menu bar, check this macOS app Ethernet Status - The Missing LAN Status Bar Icon. It shows ethernet interface, IP Address and if interface is active via changing menu bar icon. More here

I connected my USB Ethernet adopter(OEM) yesterday and had the same issue, while researching the forum here I perused this link posted by V.K <https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2022621>.

Accordingly, I went into System/Library/CoreServices/MenuExtras/ then double clicked on WWAN.menu for cable broadband. I think for DSL you'll need to click on PPPoE.menu.

This worked for me on Macbook Air, Mavericks 10.9. I hope his helps.

Ethernet doesn't have a status as such - unlike Bluetooth and WiFi it's always on, so what's going on with it depends on the gear it's connected to. You set it up in Network in the prefs, usually (if you are on broadband) to use DHCP: from then on it 'just works' (to coin a phrase).

The third party utility MenuMeters puts some network stuff in the menu bar.
