Iphone 5 not updating battery percentage. Now constantly restarting itself.

My iPhone 5 started two days ago just not updating the battery percentage. It stayed at the same percentage all day no matter how much I would use it and would only change if I would turn off the phone and turn it back on. I assumed this was starting because I had not done the update yet to my phone since I kept hearing mixed reviews about iOS7. I did the update and now my phone consantly restarts itself every couple of minutes. I cannot keep it on for more than 5 minutes. Even if I just let it sit without doing anything to it, it will restart itself. Each time it restarts the battery life shows as something different and I'm pretty sure its incorrect! I was annoyed at first and have tried doing everything I can to make this stop and now I'm just getting ****** that it's completely not working! I don't want to have to try to find the time to get to the apple store to have it looked at unless there is no way for me to fix this! I have never had ANY problems with any of my iPhones so I'm very upset that I upgraded to the 5 less than a year ago and have no issues with my iPhone 4. My boyfriend still uses my old iPhone 4 with no problems. I rarely do much on my phone so it's not like I/m on bad sites or downloading crap. I think I had just updated some of the apps that I've had on all my phones but that would be the only new thing that was done! Please someone HELP!

iPhone 5, iOS 7.0.4

Actually a week after I changed that battery my phone started to do the same thing again with a percentage is not changing and if I reboot the phone it will start rebuilding every three minutes on it's own. I am not sure if it's something to do with the hardware of the phone it is 2 1/2 years old. Or if it's an app that I have on my phone that's causing a problem because I've done a reset on it and then restored my phone back with All the old apps again. But I did find going back into the phone and unplugging the battery, and then plugging it back in when I didn't turn the phone back on it allowed me to do a reset which was not working prior to that.

I think I’ve fixed this issue with my phone. Back on Friday my phone just shut off mid game. Since I had no way of telling my battery was so low I had assumed it was just a dead batter. I plugged my phone into a power source and it turned back on. It then started to go through its’ reboot cycle and rebooted two times and then never turned on again. I left it plugged in for about 13 hours and still, it would not turn on. So I order a replacement battery. Yesterday I received the new battery and had it replaced within 5 minutes. It was surprisingly easy. Once done I plugged the phone into a charger and the screen came on, the battery had about 65% life and it started to charge as normal. It was now acting like a brand new phone. The battery meter worked and I could sit and watch it count up to 100%. Have not had a problem since. So for $35 I fixed my phone. Hope this info helps others.

I replaced my battery and the phone acted normal for about 5 days. Then it started to do the same thing again. I restored the phone back to factory settings and it still doesn't help. I can use the phone normally it's just that the battery percentage doesn't change all day. If I reboot the phone and the battery percentage changes. But then the phone will start to reboot on it's own about every three minutes and it sometimes lasts an hour but then the phone will eventually stay on. I am once more going to get another battery and try one more time just change out the battery and see if that helps. I only paid $7 for my batteries so maybe that's the problem.

I finally fixed this problem after trying everything that was suggested here, nothing worked for me. But I opened my iPhone 5 (which had all the symptoms described here) and located the battery connector and detached it and just used an ear bud dipped in 99%alcohol to clean the connector (be very careful NOT to mess with the other connectors if you try this) and then put my phone back together and VOILA!!!!! My phone worked 100%! Never rebooted randomly anymore! updates the battery status as I used it; and would not switch off when it gets to 20% because it now updates correctly.

I hope this helps but please do not try this if your device is still under warranty, rather take it into an Apple store.

I Had the same problem but I found that after charging it, unplug the power cord unlock your iPhone

then plug in the power back, when in home screen and it will show the current percent ,

looks ms like a bug , when charging the iPhone the battery gauge will not change until you are back in home screen

and plug the power back for a sec

hi

battery issues and shutting down ok I've had my 4s since may all worked ok until I updated it to ios7 than the problem started ok I studied the phone over a week trying different things like total restore the whole lot shutting down apps turning of location the whole thing basically and it still shutdown but every time it shut down and came back on it showed a different level of battery percentage but if tried using the phone browsing or whatever it would shut down again what I found is that this is a software issue and the problem is linked to the charge data ie when the battery is talking to the software for the charge circuit what I did was charged the phone fullywhen switched off this is what I did with the phone on plug in the charger once the battery charge symbol shows turn the phone off in about two hours it will be fully charged turn the phone on it will read what it was when you first put it on charge you may think it hasn't charged but it has switch the phone off unplug the charger turn the phone back on and it will show near full charge odd I know ok then go to general click on that then click on usage page down you will see your usage time and standby time they should both read zero if not and all you have is two dashes plug the charger back in while your on that page and they will then both show zero unplug charger stay on that screen press the on off button at the top of the phone once leave the phone for ten minutes press the home button at the bottom and you should see the standby time at around ten minutes and usage at one or zero you will. Ow be able to use your phone all day without it crashing the usage will increase as will, the standby time but make sure you have got at least 30 mins of standby in front of your usage for whatever reason this has worked for months for me but I have to use this procedure the only thing is the battery will just show 96 percent all day when you make calls it goes down but browsing or anything else it stays I would advise when you get yo about 8 hrs standby you charge the phone and follow all of the above again this is how I keep my phone working my guess is what happened on the software upgrade this part of the program that controls the charging circuit and charge data got corrupted. In other words the software upgrade either missed some important data when upgrading or it got corrupted or it just simply wasn't compatible and was never going to work any way that's my angle on it but at least the phone works I don't think apple Genius Bar would have worked it out had you have taken it in it basically wouldn't have worked for them unless you have the fault diagnosis software to go right through the phone circuitry and data the battery is fine charges ever time but it definatley is a software glitch in the charging program

Hey Guys - news update I completely agree with Joe on that. I had the exact same problem and followed the YouTube instructions on how to open and replace a battery. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FBIxr8W7ECc

After following the instructions I did exactly as Joe described above - I disconnected everything (cracked my invisible shield on my screen opening it) small price to pay though for a functioning phone again that charges. After disconnecting it all I cleaned with alcohol the connections where the battery is connected to the motherboard and put everything back together nicely ( about 30 minutes )

That fixed it all for me - I phone 5 back working on IOS 8.1.3 and charging nicely at the moment.

Hey DryClean,

I was wondering if this worked as a long term solution for you? Or did you have any additional problems?

I was wondering if you would let me know which kind of alcohol you used as well?

I've heard people say isopropyl-alcohol but just wanted to be sure (clearly cut and paste on the spelling there)

Please let me know!

All the best 😉
