WD My Passport not connecting...

My WD My Passport for Mac is not connecting to Mac. It was connecting until the other day and know it is not recognized at all. It isn't even found in the disk utility. Also, the portable hard drive is brand new. Suggestions...

Same problem as AN8425, ramennnn, and sahelu.

Try this!

It won't eject the external hard drive, right? Well, grab the usb cord that connects it to your computer and pull it out.

Then, go to finder, applications, and scroll down to the two WD applications installed on your HD (WD securities and WD utilities, I believe).

Drag both of them to the trash.

Open up your trash and delete those two applications.

Plug in your WD external hard drive and your computer should recognize it, mine started backing up immediately.

I had the exact same problem and this worked for me!

Good luck!

Hi everybody,
Crazy to see how many others have problems with WesternDigital My Passport and their Macs.
I really hope someone is able to HELP me as well, my case is a little bit different.

I have had my WD MyPassport for at least 2 years, my MacBook Pro for a few years more.

The external hard drive (MyPassport) has worked just fine, and I used it for specific file back up, as well as computer back ups.
Then I started having trouble connecting it, but the problem was usually solved by unplugging and connecting it again for 1 to 3 times.
Now, however it does not connect AT ALL. The white light is blinking and I can hear it rotate (or whatever it does in there), but my Laptop does not recognize it at all! Not in the Finder, not in Disk Utility.
I tried to download their newest driver from their homepage, but after I unzipped it and clicked "install" it always quits by itself and says "Installation cancelled", "Installation was not able to complete." No idea why, there is enough space on my laptop, and I also made sure to download the Mac version of it.

I called Western Digital, and they were not exactly helpful. They told me to reformat the drive after I use a file recovery program. But I can not find the Drive anywhere, so that doesn't really help. I bought a recovery software in hope to find it with it, but of corse that was a long shot.

Any ideas what to do? I have important files on there (yes, I have learned from this and will start doing doing back ups of my back ups, however not with Western Digital again!!)

THANK YOU FOR ANYTHING YOU MIGHT THINK OF!

Happy Holidays!!

Hello!

Sorry to post a message extremely late, after 2 years from the 1st post...

I have been struggling with the same issue so was wondering if anyone could help me here.

I have an external hard drive WD My Passport Essential SE (TM) but it's not recognized on my MacBook Pro n Air.

This has been going on about half a year already.

The disk has Time Machine files for both of my computers and also pictures and music that I don't want to lose at any cost.

So if any of you know how to solve the issue without reformatting or erasing the content, PLEASE HELP ME(T ^ T)!!!!!!!!!

I tried the following:

1. Go to Dick Utility and Verify + Repair the My Passport drive --- the partition map has no prob, SMART status says it's not supported.

2. Do the same for Time Machine disk within the My Passport drive --- error comes up and says 'Mac cannot repair this disk, please back up as many files as possible, reformat and restore the disk'.

3. Go to Disk Utility Restore tab and try to restore the content from the disk to other USB memory --- error comes up and says the source (My Passport disk) is not recognizable.

Now I'm stuck.

Need the drive to back up my computers and also my phone since its screen got cracked n needs repairing...

ANY COMMENTS OR INFO WOULD BE A GREAT HELP!!!!!!!!

Thank you very much in advance!

Hi Ella,

this recently happened to me tonight and I used your instructions and its now showing on my mac again. Just wondering if this is a temporary or permanent fix? Do I still need to back it all up and put all my things on another hard drive? I have a 1TB full of things that I don't want to loose so I'm stressing.

thanks
