Mavericks Magic Mouse Scrolling Issues

Many Magic Mouse scrolling issues have been reported and I'd like to add a list that affect several of my Macs:

1. Issues in iTunes

- When you are in the iTunes store, the top coverflow allows you to use your magic mouse to swipe left and right

- However, it does not swipe like an iPhone where you can re-swipe midway and instead can only do a full swipe

- You can test this by doing 2 quick swipes and the result is the swipe will stop altogether

- This should work like an iPhone where you can control the swipes at any point during the animation

2. Issues with Finder windows

- In very long lists of files and folders, if you scroll 2 or 3 times the ability to scroll stops

- This either requires you to put the mouse focus on something else and try scrolling again

- Scrolling should not stop working

- This is less apparent with inertia turned on

- However, intertia turned on makes working in other applications such as Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator almost impossible

3. Issues with Mail 7.0x

- The latest update still has scrolling issues where it stops working after prolonged use

- The only fix is to quit or force-quit to bring back scrolling capability

4. Issues in iPhoto (The following is with inertia turned off)

- When scrolling long list of photos, the speed of the scroll can suddenly change with variable acceration

- This results in jumping forward too quickly

- Mountain Lion was worse, however the scolling behavior is hard to predict in long lists

- There are various mouse scrolling 3rd party apps but finding a speed is quite difficult

I'm sure there are other mouse scrolling issues but hope these issues can be improved. Unfortunately, some of these issues have persisted since pre-Lion releases.

Go to System Preferences>Accessibility>Mouse/Trackpad and enable Mouse Keys. This lets you control the cursor when the mouse isn't working. Use the number keypad, not the regular arrow keys, to move it. 8 is up, 2 is down, 4 is left, 6 is right, and 0 is a click. You can turn off Bluetooth with your mouse, then use the keys to click and turn it back on. Remember to turn mouse keys off afterward as you may get conflicts with the mouse or trackpad. Alternately, if you have a spare USB mouse, that will work to move the cursor and click without using the mouse keys. Hope this helps!

Well, I just installed the 10.9.2 update of Mavericks, and as soon as I tried to use the scroll wheel on my Wacom tablet mouse, it stopped working. I haven't had this problem for weeks even after sleep cycles and reboots, but I tried the Bluetooth-off-then-on-again solution and it worked immediately. I hope it works for any who try it, as it is dead simple and quick to do.

I had the same issue after updating to 10.9.2 - no scrolling with the magic mouse. Tried to delete the mouse preferences and lost contact completely with the mouse. I then deleted the mouse preferences and the bluetooth preferences and all is well. I used an old fashioned wired mouse that I had lying around to make things easier.

I'm very disappointed with Mavericks in general, and this is yet another issue.

ccqccq, what other problems have you had with Mavericks? My OSX Lion time machine backups show up in Mavericks, but I can't access them, and that's about the worst thing I've noticed. I'm guessing I'll have to delete the old and start a new backup to get it to work, which isn't really a big deal, since TM does this when the disk is full about every 6 months or so.

I have been calling with Apple. They advised me to make a test account on the mac. Log on en start safari. Here it worked for me. Log off again and use your administator account. There again, the problem was fixed.

If anything gives problems again I will post it here. Including Apples advise.

Hey chumtarou,

Have you had any success with your scrolling issues in Finder? I just bought a new iMac with Mavericks pre-installed and I'm having the exact same issue as you: whenever I try to scroll through very long lists of files and folders in Finder, after scrolling down or up quickly a few (2-3) times the ability to scroll stops. I have to pause, wait for a second or two, and then try scrolling again. It's super annoying.

Anyone else have this specific issue?

Hey Denwyce,

Since making the following changes, my scrolling issues have been minimized. Note, some scrolling behaviours in OSX just haven't been fully enhanced and would need Apple to actually redo their programming. An example is iTunes where the rubber banding effect is missing on horizontal scroll areas and the main 3 large images in itunes doesn't respond well to 2 quick swipes etc.

Accessibility > Mouse & Trackpad > Mouse Options > Scrolling + with inertia is checked.

This setting was bad before as it would cause Adobe apps to scroll violently when touching the mousing. It's not as bad as before. If I don't turn this on, it makes scrolling folders a pain.

Aside from that, I have cleared the caches as per other recommendations in the forums to get rid of anything potentially affecting the scrolling in Mail etc.

Since the latest OS updates, the scrolling issues have since subsided.

I have since set "Show Scroll Bars" back to "When Scrolling" so that I don't have so many scrollbars everywhere. I've become used to inertia scrolling.

Note though that if I scroll too quickly and try to scroll again mid scroll etc. it can cause some non-responsive scrolling especially with very tall/long list folders.

Overall though, it's much better than before.

Hope this helps.
