Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

how do I move a row in a table.

The instructions from teh Pages manual (below) doesn't work. i.e. I can't get the rows to "appear to lift off the table" to move them.

Move rows and columns within a table

Select one or more rows or columns, then do either of the following:

  • Move rows: Click and hold the blue bar for the rows so they appear to lift off the table, then drag above or below another row.

Thanks

Hi Peter,

I played around a bit and found that moving rows works as per the online help only if the table fits within one page.

If you have a table that extends onto more than another page (like mine), they you can't move rows (by selecting a row, clicking again to hold, and then dragging to move)

Seems like a limitation/bug that I hope Apple can somehow put on their things to do list

Thanks again

We know the Removed list is extremely long, over 100 features, but Apples "to do list" is currently extremely short and 3 months down the track they have only reinstated 2 items and no bug fixes.

I would not hold my breath for anything. Final Cut Pro X users are still waiting on some features 3 years after their app got Apple's love. And that wasn't to make it fit iOS.

I have the same problem. Did find a slightly faster workaround, based on your note about it only happening on tables that span pages. When I want to move rows around, I go over to Format>Arrange and switch Object Placement to Stay on Page; then the rows can be moved as they should. After, I click back to Move with Text, so that the table can span pages. Dumb to have to do this, but it is a little easier than doing all that cutting and pasting.

I believe I know what your problem is.

To move a row, it matters where you do the 2nd click. At least for me it does, and I'm running Numbers 3.1 (which I detest... I want to go back to the previous Numbers with the inspectors).

First, you should highlight the entire row - you do this by clicking the row number at the far left of the table.

Second, after a brief moment, you click-and-hold on the row number AGAIN. While holding, the row will appear to "pop out" and then it can be dragged while you continue to hold.

Releasing the mouse click will set the row in place.

If you don't click (the second time) on the Row number (this is the blue area at far left), it will only attempt to make a new selection. I personally preferred the older method from the previous Numbers, where the mouse cursor changes into a HAND ICON when the row can be moved - this was so much more intuitive.

The new Numbers is extremely frustrating to me and other Numbers veterans. It seems that in an effort to improve, many reliable and well-used features are now made more complicated, and the matter is further compounded by lack of good instructional material.

Yes, he knows about the 2nd click, and to do both clicks on the row number. The problem arises on tables that go onto more than one page. When the table spans pages, you simply can't get the row to lift off, no matter where you click.

The workaround I described above is to temporarily make the table a non-spanning one by changing it to Stay on Page, do the row move, and then switch it back. Still don't have a better solution.

Finally, you referred to Numbers - this is a Pages problem.

Thanks to all for this discussion! It's been driving me batty that I can't just drag and drop rows - I seem to use an awful lot of tables, and am finding Pages very laborious in this regard. And then one day I suddenly COULD drag them about - and then never again. Thought I was going crazy! Now I realize that my tables often cross over multiple pages, so at least I know a few cheats thanks to this discussion.

Hi, VikingOSX,

I've recently started using tables in Pages v. 5.2 and I am experiencing the same problems outlined above in a table which spans more than one page. None of the suggested courses of action produces the 'floating' effect described. It's a shame that we are now 18 months or so on from the original post and nothing has been done to fix this.
