Time Machine is already in use

I have a regular problem with Time Machine backups on OS X Server. The problem started in ML Server but continues in Mavericks.

Every few days I get the message "Backup Failed: The backup on <server-name> is already in use."

To fix it, I have to

  • go to the server,
  • turn OFF Time Machine,
  • turn OFF File Sharing
  • Eject the Time Machine backup volume
  • Use Disk Utilities to mount the Time Machine volume again
  • turn ON File Sharing
  • turn ON Time Machine

After this, TM works again quite nicely for a few days. Then the message re-appears.

Anyone had this problem?

If so, did you fine a solution?

regards

Chris

Corbin, I don't know what causes it. I've seen three or four on my server - but killed them because I had the Time Machine problem, which was resolved by clearing this up as I said.

In my case I tend to just shut the clamshell on my MBP and that *seems* to equate to these suspended sessions building up - almost like the session isn't reconnected and a new one created when I next connect. But this is just my speculation as I can't find anything relevant in the logs on either Mac.

This might make someone's life easier. Toggles AFP sharing in one line on a non-server installation. On a server I guess you should use the serveradmin-something command instead of launchctl.

ssh -t username@server.local 'sudo launchctl unload /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.AppleFileServer.plist ; sudo launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.AppleFileServer.plist'

Specifically where are you setting the auto reboot?

I tried this same technique months ago but the server halts the process by warning about disconnecting users.

I created a plist file in /Library/LaunchDaemons called "com.name-this-whatever.reboot.plist" containing:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>

<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">

<plist version="1.0">

<dict>

<key>Label</key>

<string>com.name-this-whatever.reboot</string>

<key>ProgramArguments</key>

<array>

<string>/sbin/shutdown -r +1</string>

</array>

<key>StartCalendarInterval</key>

<dict>

<key>Hour</key>

<integer>4</integer>

</dict>

</dict>

</plist>
