Bose Sound Docks are no longer compatible with Apple iPhones or iPods?

When plugging my iPhone 4S or 5, or my iPod 3rd Gen or 7th Gen into my Bose Sound Dock, I recieve a message that reads, "This iPhone/iPod is not compatible with this accessory" and will not play stored music.

Background Info:

- The Bose Sound Dock was designed to support Apple products.

- All software/OS on the Apple products is current as of Dec 2013.

- The Bose product doesn't have update-able software associated with it.

- Clearly, something has changed with the Apple products.

What can be done to fix this so that iPhones and iPods will play again on Bose products?

I've unplugged/replugged the Bose Sound Dock, and I've powered down and powered up the Apple products expecting that something would reset, but these steps have proved to be ineffective and nothing has changed.

iPhone 4S, iOS 7.0.4, Also applies to iPhone 5, iPod 3rd

MarkJMcQ,

As there have been changes made by both Bose and Apple, it's likely the one will blame the other for the incompatibility. My very limited experience with Apple was exactly like that. In my case I know it is an Apple problem because I bought two identical iPads. The one was a gift for a relative and has never been updated, it still works perfectly with a third party device. Mine, since it's OS update, does not.

If the adaptor doesn't work, and you can't update any firmware (not recommended anyway), the easiest solution will be to try and find an iPod that's still compatible with your dock. Not what you want hear, I'm sure, but probably the least frustrating option. If there's a Bose dealership in your neighbourhood you could always take the combo to them and see if they have any suggestions....ditto for Apple.

Good luck!

My remote battery died years ago, but so did the need for the remote. You can control volume and channels from your iPod, so why would you need the remote? My guess is that the Bose remote will still let you control volume, but that's probably it. You can always ship it back if you have prime and the cool stream doesn't satisfy. I was blown away by it. Sometimes it takes a few seconds to get going. It will skip like it's searching for a signal before locking on after 20 seconds. Other than that, it's great. It's good up to about 30 feet before losing the sigoal. I usually just leave my iPhone next to the Bose or bring it to the dinner table to control Pandora.

I Have Bose portable sound dock. Works fine with iPod 4th gen, running OS 6.1.5. Occasionally I get messages that it's not compatible ., but I ignore it the device charges and plays most times, but I might have to reseat it. It works fine with iPhone 4s running OS 7. Just tried to use it with iPhone 6 running OS 8.1.2, using a audio cable plugging it in to headphone jack and into back of Bose dock and it doesn't work! Unplug iPhone 6. & plug in iPod touch v4 and it works fine. This is definitely an iOS issue. Totally stinks!

JAG, you're BRILLIANT!! I did exactly what you suggested (making sure I backed up my very full iPod) and I'll be darned, it WORKED! I was getting that frustrating message after years of my iPod working perfectly with my Bose speaker. It took some time, maybe an hour or two, but who cares, my iPod is playing Sam Smith right now as I type.

JAG, you made me a very happy woman.

THANK YOU!!!!

I'm having this issue now. The iPod Touch 4th won't play through the Bose dock. My iPod Nano plays fine through it. But the iPod Touch running 6.1.6 will not. I've done the instruction by Jagg to restore to factory theough iTunes on my computer and still nothing. I even did it oncd without syncing any music just to see if iTunes samples would play or Pandora...nothing. It charges the Touch without any problem. Just won't play anything anymore. Did I miss another fix or idea to get the Touch playing again?

update, I tried my iPhone 6+ with the 30 pin to Lighting adapter and the Bose plays perfectly. Plays the iPod Nano perfectly. Just won't play my iPod Touch at all. The iPhone 6+ is running iOS 8.3.

update, I decided to try my iPod Gen 1 that used to work and it will not either. It's as though this Bose has something against iPod Touch. This one is running iOS 3.1.3.

hi there...

i had the same thing happen here. i went through all of the reconfiguring & nothing.

WHAT DID CHANGE, is that i took the battery off of the sound dock, waited 10 seconds, then put it back on, put my nano on it, & it started

working.

weird, but i thought i'd share if it helps any.

me.... FINALLY enjoying the sound dock again.

good luck everyone. (may life be as easy to hack 🙂)

update, I used an old iPhone 3GS and an iPhone 4 on the Bose SoundDock II and both worked just fine. Pandora, iTunes Radio and iTunes connecting to my home network to play music from my mac mini all play fine. The iPod Touch, still won't play a thing. I don't get it. There is definitely something that the Bose has against the iPod Touch or something the Touch has against the Bose. I'm not sure which but I'd like to know why. I'd really like to use the iPod Touch on the SoundDock as planned.

Bose Sound Docks are no longer compatible with Apple iPhones or iPods?
