MacBook Pro Retina, 15-inch Late 2013, 10.9, unsystematic freeze/hang/unresponsiveness

My brand new MBP retina 15'' Late 2013 keeps freezing on me. Just clicked on a twitter link in an email and then it stopped again; no mouse movement; the seconds of the clock in the menu bar are not moving anymore; no force quit of apps possible; just the power switch helps to turn the machine off.

I don't have any peripherals attached besides apple bluetooth keyboard and mouse.

I already repaired disk permissions from cmd+R while booting, did SMC, PRAM reset and safe boot.

As I read there was an update for the 13'' firmware and one for the 15'' with NVIDIA (http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1705) but no new software for my machine yet.

Also looked into /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports but nothing too interesting.

I created sys diagnose and spin dump from activity monitor if that's handy, but Apple Support didn't want them.

They just suggest to reinstall the OS, but as there were already updates for ALL other new Retina MBPs, I'd suppose there needs one for this one too!

Exact same problem here, with slight differences. I've been developing android apps and merely plugging in my phone causes the system to just stop. The apple support suggested it was Android Eclipse's problem. However recently its escalated, and theres no apparent pattern to my problem. I click a tab, Freeze! or I click finder, Freeze! I hope this is fixed asap I can't have this on my main work machine.

So far my MBP has crashed 12 times this year and at least 6 times before that. I've filed the system dump (shift+ctrl+option+cmd+dot during the issue then wait for the fans to spin up then spin down before restarting then look in /var/tmp for the last file/dir names something like sysdiagnose_blah) at least 10 times now and nothing from Apple. It's bug 15656560.

I have a late 2013 15 inch full spec retina MBP.

Symptoms are total screen freeze but mouse still works, skype and music continues. No keyboard. No tabbing between apps. Occasionally it freezes in a couple of seconds as if grinding to a halt, but mostly it's instant. Gotta be graphics drivers - it was that with some old MBPs with nVidia back in the day.

There is no pattern that I can discern.

I am sorry to dissapoint you, just had an instant freeze with 10.9.2. Haven't got a clue what triggered it. Was browsing in Safari. May be that was the thing, what was I thinking, using Safari on an Apple;-)

But to be honest I am getting really tired of this problem. Any additional posts on the forum regarding this problem are deleted! I got a reply that I should not complain and that I probably was the only one because nobody else had this problem and then the post was gone. So, that's sharp logic:

If there was a systemic problem as you describe, this forum would be lit up like Times Square with posts similar to yours.

If you want assistance you will have to provide details regarding your computers, your computing environment, installed programs, error messages if any, exactly what you are doing when the issue appears, etc.

If you just want to complain, go elsewhere where they don't want to help you. We here would like to help with your issue.

They were right in that I am indeed ranting and am mad about this problem with no solution in sight. But I did contact support, filed a bug report, tried all sort of solutions posted in the forum.

Same issue here with a MBP Retina, Mid 2012. This has only started happening in the last month or so. I get it every few days.

I was on Skype call when everything froze, Skype call continued for about a minute before disconnecting.

I have been noticing a horizontal black line flicker across the screen just lately.

I have submitted feedback to Apple, is there a better problem reporting mechanism I should be using? The feedback form didn't have an entry for OS X 10.9.2 so it didn't fill me with confidence.

After OS X 10.9.2 the freezing-when-waking issue is no more. But I do get occasional freezing, admittedly with a lot of applications open but, hey, this is why I splashed on a quad-core 15' late 2013 Macbook Pro! Freezing cannot be pinned down to any specific activity. Cursor stops to move, and I get no prompt to send report to Apple. I also get the horizontal black lines across the screen, which suggests a rendering issue.

I have found the following two troubleshooting routines to help, but not elliminate the issue:

and

I just purchased a Macbook Pro 15" Retina and am experiencing this issue on a daily basis. I check Console after each crash and nothing is logged during this time.

Crash Symptoms:

UI Completely Freezes

System does not respond to keyboard/mouse input

Music is still playing (Spotify, iTunes, etc.)

Crash Resolution:

Hard power the system and reboot

Here is the last message received in Console before the freezing occurs followed by the first message after reboot. There seems to be nothing of use in here.

Just to add that my system froze again yesterday.

Symptoms (for those are new to the thread and/or experiencing different issues)

  • External mouse doesn't move cursor
  • Built-in trackpad does move cursor
  • Sound - e.g. Skype, Spotify - continues to place
  • Nothing on the screen updates; it's effectively like a screenshot
  • It doesn't appear to be related to Chrome. However, I always have lots of apps open so it's hard to diagnose
  • Hard power-off is required
  • Replacing the MBP won't solve it

Note that you can do shift+ctrl+alt(aka option)+cmd+period to create a dump while the issue is happening. The dump files are at /var/temp/sysdiagnose_blah... Create a bug in bugreport.apple.com and upload these file to them along with other comments. Note that to be sure the dump has completed you ought to wait for the fans to spin up and then all the way down again before restarting.

They are aware of the issue and appear to be working on it, although are uncommunicative as normal as is their way.

For what it's worth, my theory is that it's an nVidia graphics driver issue. My old card-switching MBP from a few years back had the same issue and they resolved it... sadly it took them the best part of a year to do so and I had to remain in the integrated graphics mode most of that time. Now I have 2 external monitors, that's not an option for me.
