Re-installing GarageBand 6 after downloading GB 10

I understand that when you download the new GarageBand, it puts the older version in it's own folder so that you can use both. I prematurely deleted version 6, thinking all of my AU's and instruments would be available in 10. I understand now, due to bit issues, some of them I can no longer use until the manufacturers issue updates. I don't have any problem with this, but my issue is that now I have 10 and want to get 6 back. What's the best way to go about doing this? I assume it will be difficult, and that I'll have to download a really old version and do one update at a time? It's not even an issue of wanting to use old instruments and AU's that I can't use anymore, but I have projects I was in the middle of that use those things, and I definitely need to get the old version of GB back on my computer so that I can finish them. Opening them in the new GB will cause a lot of problems.

Thanks!

OS X Mavericks (10.9), 4GB RAM, 750GB Storage

Reverting to GarageBand '11 is difficult, since Apple does not provide an installer for download.

Do you still have a backup from the time before the upgrade, so you could restore GarageBand 6.0.5 from the backup?

Or installers from the time you bought GarageBand '11? If your Mac came with SnowLeopard, GarageBand '11 should be on the DVD with the bundled iLife apps. What is the system your Mac originally came with?

There is no point in backing up from that far away. It would be no different from me reformatting at this point, considering all of the many, many things that will have changed. I will have to reinstall so much software since I never save the DMGs. This is very frustrating but if it's my only option, I guess that's fine.

Why would my backup of the old Garageband be incomplete? Why, in my backing up, would only Garageband incompletely restore while the rest of my OS restored perfectly? I feel like my back up wasn't the problem because the date I backed up was when Garageband was fully functional, an entire day before I even knew about the new Garageband version. I think the actual instal process of the new Garageband damaged the old version somehow. As if it didn't completely move it to it's subfolder.

There is absolutely NO way to acquire a copy of the Garageband 6.0.5 app anymore? Or a copy that is outdated that the App Store or Software Update will allow me to update so that I can use it?

Hey, wouldn't I get a fresh copy of GB 6.0.5 by uninstalling GB 10 and reinstalling Mavericks?!

Mavericks does not include GarageBand 6.0.5. Mavericks comes with GarageBand 10.

You could try to revert to Mt. Lion (by restoring your system from Internet Recovery), and hope that the App Store then will show you again GarageBand 6.0.5. But I never tried that, and so cannot be sure.

GarageBand '11 can still be bought with the iLife installer disk from Amazon, if you are really desperate to get it back.

You are welcome, angelhair. It is great, that you got your GarageBand back. 🙂 And your father to going to all the trouble mailing it across the country, just great. Now you can make a new backup to save GarageBand.

I'm not sure how to mark this issue as 'resolved,' or how to mark your answer as 'this solved my question.'

Don't worry about the points. Thanks for the good intentions. You cannot mark anymore answers in this thread. There is only one "Solved" and two "Helpfuls" per thread. I already got my share 🙂 Here are some tutorials, that explain the point system: https://discussions.apple.com/static/apple/tutorial/index.html

You can download 6.0.5 and all other previous GarageBand versions here Apple - Support - Downloads

The downloads at that site are only updaters, not installers. You first need a full installer for GarageBand and then can use the updaters from the download page to update to the version you want. The full installers need to be bought. GarageBand 10.0 is the first installer that can be bought for free.
