MacBook Pro slow to wake from sleep after installing SSD

I have an odd problem with my early 2011 13" MacBook Pro (2.7GHz Core i7, 8GB memory). I'm currently running Mavericks, but had the same issue under Mountain Lion.

Some months ago I replaced the original 500 GB hard drive with an SSD, a 480 GB SanDisk Extreme II. It works perfectly and the computer seems lightening fast by comparison, except in one respect: when waking from sleep mode, there is a delay of about 30 seconds before the computer comes back to life. Without going into the details of my trouble shooting path, I'm as certain as can be that the problem is associated with the SSD. In fact, I replaced the original SSD with a new one of the same make and model, and the delay persists. I've tried cloning and swapping the HD and SSD in various states, and the result is alway the same: no delay with the HD, a ~30 second delay with the SSD.

I have my computer set to require a password on waking, and the delay takes either of two forms. Either (1) there's a wait of about 30 seconds before it will accept my password, or (2) it will accept my password, but after I type and enter it there's a delay of about 30 seconds before the password screen disappears and the computer becomes usable.

At this poin, I'm about to reinstall the HD, since the snappier performance of the SSD doesn't compensate for the aggravation of waiting for it to wake up after sleep.

I'll welcome and thank you for any suggestions on a fix.

I have the exact same issue as starkcs on my late-2011 15" Macbook Pro.

I also have a Sandisk Extreme II 480GB SSD on it and, from 10.8.5 onward, my laptop has had trouble waking from sleep. It hangs (for 20-30 seconds) either on the login screen or after inputing the password and going to the Desktop.

I've tried formatting the SSD and reinstalling OS X, repairing permissions, verifying and repairing the SSD, turning off TRIM Enabler, etc. Nothing seems to work.

Going back to an HDD is not an option, because the SSD's speed is essential to me.

Having to wait 20-30s each time my Mac wakes from sleep is driving me insane, though.

Would love some help.

Thanks!

Thanks for this. I've ordered a Samsung 840 Pro SSD, which uses a different controller than the SanDisk, and will see how that works. If it does I'll leave it in the MacBook Pro, on which I use sleep mode regularly, and use the SanDisk in my Mac Pro, on which I rarely use sleep mode. If the Samsung has the same problem I'll use both SSDs in the Mac Pro, which I've been meaning to install SSDs in any event. Stay tuned.

Not sure that will help. I had, in fact, contacted SanDisk and they did replace my SSD; but the replacement had the same issue. Apparently it's an inherent incompatibility of some sort with something in our MacBooks -- that's why I tried a different brand with a different controller. I'd have persisted with SanDisk if I hadn't had an alternative use for the SanDisk SSD.

If you do find a solution with SanDisk, I'd very much like to hear about it. If it's of any help when you contact SanDisk, you can refer to my incident number with them, 131115-000347. I did email them a report last evening that the replacement SSD had the same problem (and that the Samsung did not) but didn't request any further follow-up.

Many thanks and good luck.

I'm curious if you ever found a solution for this issue. I recently purchased the SanDisk Extreme II 480GB, replacing my OWC Extreme Pro 240GB. The OWC never experienced the "slow to wake" issue whereas the SanDisk drive does, consistently. To make sure I'm having the same symptoms, this is what happens to me: Put the mac to sleep (either manually or letting it do it on its own, waiting for the led to pulse showing that it is asleep), then wake it up (press a key on the keyboard), the logon screen shows almost immediately but as soon as I try to type the pinwheel/beach ball shows up, I wait between 20 and 30 seconds and then I'm able to type and all is well.

I contataced SanDisk and their support was horrible. They simply told me "contact MAC for this issue" (no joke, not "contact Apple" but "contact MAC", in all caps). I explained that it works fine with the OWC drive just not the SanDisk. They replied with another article showing that all macs have trouble waking from sleep (not true). I replied again indicating that I've never had this issue with any of my 3rd party drives, only this SanDisk. Then the replied simply stating that all mac's have issues with 3rd party hard drives when waking from sleep. At this point I threw a fit and yelled at my screen, even though it wasn't my screens fault.

In any case, their support has not been willing to do any actual troubleshooting. I'd love to return it and I might have to - but as you stated, it's annoying to have this issue but the performance is fine the rest of the time.

Thanks for any input you have.

I finally got around to installing the problem SanDisk SSD as the boot drive in my desktop, a mid-2010 Mac Pro running Mavericks. So far, at least, there's no wake-up delay -- so, the SanDisk stays in the Mac Pro and the Samsung stays in the laptop. The incompatibility between the SanDisk and the laptop remains a mystery. If I ever hear more on this from SanDisk, I'll report here, and I'd be grateful if any of you would report on any explanation or solution you may find.

After telling me that Apple is to blame for this issue, SanDisk decided they wanted to send me a new drive. I'm not sure how I want to proceed. I'm fairly certain that the drive is fine (just gut feeling, no facts to back that up). My issue is that they have made zero attempt at troubleshooting the issue (at least not with me). I replied letting them know that I would prefer they at least attempt to fix the issue and/or work with Apple on the issue. Anyone had any better luck yet?

It's too much work to replace the drive just to have the same result. I'm considering just returning it and investing in the similar drive from OWC, at least I know their drives work well. I'm told the Samsung drives also work well.

I just bought the same SSD as you did (Extreme II 480Gb) by SanDisk, unaware of this issue. Found myself waiting everytime my Macbook goes to sleep (deep sleep - default period 1 hour) to be responsive (20-30 sec).

E-mailed SanDisk support and from what I've read in this discussion, is to no avail.

I wish they'll reimburse me... otherwise I'm stuck with this...

Have anyone found a solution (not a workaround like increase the deep sleep period) or have heard any news from SanDisk?

Thanks

No solution that I'm aware of yet. SanDisk wants to send me a new drive but I don't want them to because I fear it will have the same issue. It seems like they and Apple need to get together and review what is happening and produce an OS and or Firmware fix for it. I like that SanDisk wants to give me a new drive but they insist on my sending the "defective" drive first then they'll send a replacement, however this can take up to 10 business days, which I can't do because of my job.

The saga continues.
