Reports are that this is a problem with the iTunes Store that they're working on. Some people have had success after signing out of their account and back in. If that doesn't work for you, wait a few hours or perhaps until tomorrow and by then they may have the problem sorted out.
Regards.
I just noticed the same error message on my PC, have been .mac client from go. Additionally I started having sign in issues on apple tv just before the weekend. Nov 30 2012.
I tried signing out and waiting on my PC, and can no longer sign back in.
same thing here... got the same error message.
I was listening to a great song on iTunes Radio on my Mac and when i tried to download it, got the error. Then i tried to sign out and sign in, but by then i couldn't even sign in. Tried on my iPhone, same thing.
Strangely, on my iPad Mini worked fine. I've manage to buy the song.
Already sent a mail to apple itunes support to see if they can fix it.
On another forum discussion someone suggested changing the date on your computer to December 11. Then try logging in. Worked for most of us. (I left the account logged in and changed the date back to today and have no further issues. Not logging out of iTunes again tho 🙂)
the following reply from Plinka just worked for me, logged back in thank you plinka!

I have iPhone 5, iPad air and 27"iMac and ALL of them are doing this and I am in the heartland of the USA.
Saw recommendation to sign out and sign back in...so I did it on my iPad Air and it worked...now trying it on my iPhone 5...I will type what I find next....
ok it now works on the iPhone as well...
so try going to settings, iTunes & App store, then click sign out and then sign back in...cheers
Same issue here. Logging out and in didn't work. Turning off and on didn't work. Apple's definitely having a problem. FRUSTRATING.
(Curiosly, however, I could use my Apple ID to log in to this support page. Go figure.)
I am facing the same problem like everyone else on this post. My xxxxxx@me.com ID didn't work.. I panicked then I logged out and tried with xxxxxx@mac.com (it worked)
this is a problem that Apple should fix ASAP ðŸ˜
Cheers
I tried singeing out of my apple box by changing the country and back to Canada and it did not work. I cannot access the movies I purchased or purchase new ones. Is apple working on this problem? They must be loosing lots of money by the second, for there are other sources one can purchase and watch movies. I do prefer Apple though.
I can confirm that setting your computer/iPad/iPhone/iPod to a date in the future (sometime next week) and then making a free purchase on that device and then going back and setting the clock to today resolves the issue. No sign-out/sign-in required.
Or it could be just a coincidence that this worked as I have just tried a purchase on my iPhone in which I didn't set the time and I'm able to purchase just fine. Mind you this iPhone is a 3GS which can only run iOS 6. So maybe it was just a problem on iTunes on the Mac and iTunes on iOS 7.
Or maybe they just fixed the whole problem.
Who knows in all these weird things?…
[Edit: I just did some further testing on my iPhone and it is still messed up, I had to change the date on it too. I do think that it is a certificate error of some kind, as detailed in my later posting, and setting the device's date to the future forces it to get the new certificate which allows your account to be properly verified.]

My guess is there is a bug in Apple's code that was causing issues with today, December 4… why this day? Who knows. Maybe it is because today was a day that they renewed the security certificates on their servers and all devices had an expired certificate? Perhaps switching the date forward forces the iOS device or Mac to get the new non-expired certificate from the servers and is thus able to be verified against Apple's servers.
That is my best educated guess as I've seen it happen here at work with some of our online services.
Cheers, Andrew.
I had the same problem, I think it's a bug and requires a fix. I was able to get around it by doing the following on my iPad mini:
Go to Settings > iTunes & App Store > Create New Apple ID
You will agree to the Terms & Conditions again but when it asks for your information, get out of it by clicking on your Home button.
Then go back to Settings > iTunes & App Store. Log in with your original Apple ID and Password. It will prompt you to verify the credit card info you had on file. Once you've done that you're good to go. Hope it works for you like it did for a lot of other people!

I think that creating a new account accomplishes the same thing as the date change as creating a new account would involve downloading a new security certificate to the device and logging in with the original ID would either use the new updated store certificate or download another updated one. This is all theoretical but it is the one so far that best fits the issue we are all having and matches what I've seen elsewhere.
When you view your Apple account in iTunes on the Mac you see a padlock icon with the text "Secure Connection". This involves having a security certificate on your device so that your device knows that it is talking to the real Apple Servers and not something else. Any website with https:// in it has a certificate and they all have expiry dates (and times). For example if you look at the certificate for this website you will see that the certificate expires on Wednesday, March 12, 2014 at 8:01:24 AM PDT. If that certificate is not upated in time or there is an issue with getting an updated certificate, things go hoopy.
