Separate volume control for alarm and ringer

It there any way to control volume for alarm and ringer separately? I use max volume during the day in order not to miss calls and min volume at night so that alarm won't wake anybody. So I have to change volume twice a day - not very convenient.

iPhone 4S, iOS 7.0.2

No, there's no way to do it! Personally, it's the most annoying thing about ANY Apple product, and makes me think that the top brass at Apple are either 1) so rich they have a butler wake them up each morning 2) they don't have an iPhone or 3) they sleep with their heads up their own ....

Seriously, is there one good reason why they would make it impossible to set the volume of the alarm??

They've reputedly just sold 500 million iPhones, and what percent would like to use the phone as a morning alarm? There's got to be at least 1 million people each and every week that get ****** off with this, so why wouldn't they change things ... It's insane, stupid or pathetic - take your pick

uri65,

I think i'm having the same trouble. I want my alarm to ring quietly- it doesn't take much to wake me up- and nothing worse than a blaring sound to jolt me out of bed. However, I want my phone calls to ring loudly. If I set the volume low at night for my alarm to ring quietly, I forget to set it back up in the morning and then I can't hear my phone ring with a call or text message.

I found a free app called Nightstand Central. I set the alarm and volume the way I want but it doesn't change my phone volume setting so I can leave that up (I don't have an issue with getting phone calls/texts at night). Yes, I'd like that functionality directly in my clock --> alarm settings in my phone but this is an ok work around and was free.

Wow that was an incredibly helpful explaination. It's as if you didn't notice that everyone here is asking HOW to separate alarm volume from ring volume...not asking if you CAN separate the two.

Q: How to rebuild a transmission?

A: Try rebuilding the transmission.

Like seriously dude. Why did you even comment.

Like, seriously dude. Why did you register on this site just to chastise someone? All those points Chris has they got because the people they helped gave them. What have you done to help people in these forums, dude?

You might also want to pay attention to the fact that in the time since Chris was active in this thread, Apple resolved the issue.

"But I need the alarm to be quiet and ringer to be loud. How can I do this without adjusting the volume (once before going to sleep and once after waking up)?"

You cannot. This is it an option in iOS

There are literally hundreds of alarm apps which allow different volumes.

Personally, I use Nightstand Central. I have different alarms for weekdays & weekends, set the alarm to fade in over 10 minutes. Can select various sounds and music from your library.

Free version is a available

I don't know for sure who needs what by now, so consider this a generic fix. I have an older phone (5s) and here's what I do. The ringer, alerts and alarms can be set to different sounds. Even multiple alarms can each have separate sounds. Assign sounds with volumes needed for each purpose. If there's not enough volume difference, try those that are more/less harsh or abrupt.

I have another option, as I made custom ring tones from favorite songs that work not only for different alerts but different people in my directory. Volume can be adjusted during creation, so I have both soft and loud (this was done years ago- don't ask me how as since then Garage Band has morphed and my memory has faded). My ringer ("In the Mood", "Johnny Be Good") and my alarms ("Bugle Call Rag", others) are loud. My alerts and notifications are lower and a couple have no tone- only vibrate.

Hope this helps somebody.

Chosing the proper tone is certainly the way to do. But it will STILL vary with the ringer volume. And I change the ringer volume to different things throughout the day depending on the specific situation. Yet EVERY morning I want my alarm tone to be the same volume. So even with the "right" tone, it'll come out at a different volume depending on where I last set the ringer volume. Nope... I've still got to check that ringer volume EVERY night before I turn in. And then remember to set it back to where I want the ringer in the AM.

Hi Chris,

I was just researching this same issue and have to say I agree with slaterk. Every app should have a separate ringer control and it's simply not acceptable Apple offer this functionality.

I miss calls almost daily because the alarm is low and the last thing I have on my mind when I rise is changing anything on my iPhone other than to shut off the alarm.

Thanks for all your posts.

WOw! So none of you actually figured this out yet.. Ok, let me tell you how, step by step...

1- Go to Alarm

2- Choose an alam to Edit.

3- Once in the Edit alarm, go to sound.

4- Click on whichever sound or song you want to wake up too.

5- While that sound is playing, use your Volume buttons to turn it either up or down.

And that's all, it's pretty simple but it works for me... Good luck..

Right, this discussion has been going on for over 8 years and they have yet to fix it. It appears the discussion board is for customer amusement only.

I think your math is a bit off. This thread started in December of 2013, just over two years ago. The purpose of this forum is for users to provide other users with technical support. As has been noted, Apple doesn't read here for suggestions. If you have a suggestion, use the Feedback page:

http://www.apple.com/feedback

And, just because some customers want a particular feature doesn't mean a) that Apple considers it a problem that needs to be fixed and b) that Apple will chose to make a change in the interface. We don't always get what we want in this world.

His issue is the same as mine. I need to the volume for my alarm to stay consistent and the volume for my calls to stay consistent. But, I don't need them to be the same. Therefore, I need them to be separate.

Submit your feedback to Apple here:

Meanwhile, try using the Bedtime feature of the clock. It has a separate volume for the alarm.
