Separate volume control for alarm and ringer

It there any way to control volume for alarm and ringer separately? I use max volume during the day in order not to miss calls and min volume at night so that alarm won't wake anybody. So I have to change volume twice a day - not very convenient.

uri65,

I think i'm having the same trouble. I want my alarm to ring quietly- it doesn't take much to wake me up- and nothing worse than a blaring sound to jolt me out of bed. However, I want my phone calls to ring loudly. If I set the volume low at night for my alarm to ring quietly, I forget to set it back up in the morning and then I can't hear my phone ring with a call or text message.

I found a free app called Nightstand Central. I set the alarm and volume the way I want but it doesn't change my phone volume setting so I can leave that up (I don't have an issue with getting phone calls/texts at night). Yes, I'd like that functionality directly in my clock --> alarm settings in my phone but this is an ok work around and was free.

HHi.

i have the same issue here. Every night I set the alarm volume via the clock app to the lowest weakest sound possible to be waken up by a blasting sound .

Not cool. To me or to my husband.😕

HOw ow is it possible for apple to "forget" such basic feature in a device as PERSONAL as an iphone?!

are they not offering that new wrist watch phone thing.... ? Is that as inconvenient when it comes to the simplest of features like it is an alarm clock?!

It is just absurd!!!

I Jumped at looking at DND when you said it does what the op wants. But I'm afraid you're wrong. he wants to not have to turn the volume up and down every day so as to not have the alarm blaring in the morning, or miss calls because the vomune was turned down. This is also a major gripe for me. I moved to iOS from android. The alarms on andriod are individually volume controlled for every alarm. so instead of having to turn my phone down (I'm a light sleeper who doesn't like the alarm loud) then turn it back up in the day. I could set it once when I created my wake up alarm and never change it or the master volume ever again. This is something I really want. Apple should look to androids clock options for alarms and snooze ,,(9 mins and no other option *** )

For what it's worth, uri65, I've found one method that works for me. I found a song I wanted to use for the alarm, copied it out into a working directory. I then loaded it into Total Recorder PE (note, you must use PE for this, but you can run the demo version if your sample is less than 60 seconds (it puts a burp every 60 seconds)). (I'm sure there are other programs that will do this but I have and use TR a lot so it was easiest for me).

Once you've got the file loaded, use the controls below the track to select the first 59 seconds (no burp!), then select Process, Fading Effects, and put 59 seconds for the Fade in/Fade out interval (max of 99 seconds, but we want to avoid the burp). Now "Apply to selection", set Fade In, and click OK.

This will provide a serious amount of fade to the entire 60 seconds worth -- and the beginning of the track is barely audible even with the iphone volume at max.

Once you've completed this, do a File, Save As, and save it with a new name (I called mine "Fade In Alarm". Import this file to iTunes, sync it to your iphone, and set the alarm sound to this file. I think you'll find it a satisfactory (if not perfect) work-around.

Now if only Apple would split the volume controls we'd be fine! :-)

Thanks for such elaborate answer, drdca! I'll definitely give it a try - it sounds like a real solution.

I did try alarm apps and they all have their share of problems. Nightstand Central, for example, has a problem with earphones - if they are connected it rings through them instead of speakers (iOS alarm rings through speakers).

OK, I've found a reasonably easy solution to my issue with volume levels. If you're happy to wake up to a choice of a music track on your iDevice, then you can change the master volume of your chosen track, so even if leaving the volume of your device on high, then the alarm plays a quiet track. So, choose your track in iTunes, right click and create an aac copy and rename by adding 'alarm' to the end of the track name. Now right click on the new 'alarm' track and click 'get info', under one of the tabs in the get info tab, you can change the master volume of the track, so I set mine to to about 10%. I then synced the new track to my phone and selected this 'alarm' version of the track as the alarm tone. Now with the phone on high volume, my alarm is still quiet. Hope this helps.

Hi Siphone6,

Thanks for being another person trying to sort out a solution, Sadly we're not quite there yet. As far as I can tell turning off the 'volume control with buttons' only separates the volume for audio or call loudness from the alerts and notifications. But the problem is not being able to separate the alert volume from the alarm volume. I think most people here seek a quiet alarm, but not having the alerts quiet too. (being forgetful i tend to miss stuff because the phone was quiet from my alarm preference the prior morning) While I'm not convinced this will ever change (see how long ago this thread started) maybe one day we will get volume settings that are discreet across the entire phone.

Hi MattjamesB,

That's fine! Just trying to help.

The thing is I've tried it and it works: by separating the ringer settings from the volume buttons, you can set a volume for the alarms I.e in the settings and a separate volume for the phone ringer I.e adjusted through the volume keys.

Have you you tried it out? The only thing I've found is that you can't separate the vibration alert, I haven't tried with a song of mine though.

Thanks for you help. However setting "Change with Buttons" to OFF doesn't separate ringer and alarm volumes - they are always bundled together. It just makes volume buttons to only affect audio volume. As for ringer/alarm volume now you have to use a slider in Setttings-Sounds. But there is only ONE slider - for both ringer and alarm.

That's fine! That's why I posted that comment.

I guess that it hasn't worked for anyone else on this forum but it HAS for me, and the guy who posted the original comment on reedit. I have an iPhone 6 on iOS 8.3 (I think! Lol) and I tried it out yesterday evening with the alarm function several times. The alarm rang at a lower volume than my ringer each time. In fact, I left my ringer on maximum and had the alarm tone set a much lower volume - 3 bars, and the alarm went off at a lower volume this morning, unfortunately with the vibration as I had left that on(!)

If it doesn't work for you guys then I'm sorry but the fact remains that it has for me and at least one other person. Apologies that it doesn't seem to have worked for others but it does beg the question of whether anyone has tried to adjust the ringer higher than the alarm volume after unticking the option, 'change with buttons', through the volume buttons. I just don't understand how mine could be so different.

If they have then I'm sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Hi SiPhone6,

Really glad for you that you've got the two sounds (phone ring volume and alarm clock volume) to be separate 🙂

I couldn't get this to work for me 😟 would you mind writing out the steps that you took?

Was it

1. tick option 'change with buttons'

2. set volume with slider to low

3. untick option 'change with buttons'

4. set volume to high with volume buttons

Probably not, but i'd love to try the steps that got it working for you!

Cheers
