My Iphone5 has a black screen and won't turn on

So after school one day i took my phone out of my pocket and the screen was black, i was pressing the on and off button for the sound and i could hear the noises, so i decided to restart my phone. After waiting for ten minutes i keep on pressing the restart button and it still would not turn on. Once i got home i plugged my phone into the charger thinking that it might turn on. However it just kept on making the noise as if i was pluging and unplugging the charger repeatedly. I keep on restarting the phone and it still has not turned on. It has been two days and the phone has still not turned on. When i plugged my phone into the the computer thinking i could reset my phone into facotry settings, itunes could not recognized my serial number. Now after not charging it for a day it will not charge at all

I was experiencing the same issue and serching for an answer but this helped me.!!

If you can't update or restore your iOS device

You can use recovery mode if you can't update or restore your iOS device.

You might need to use recovery mode if:

  • You can't update or restore because iTunes doesn't recognize your device or says it's "in recovery mode".
  • The Apple logo remains onscreen for several minutes with no progress bar.
  • The Connect to iTunes screen appears.

See what to do if the progress bar remains onscreen for several minutes

Use recovery mode

Recovery mode erases your device and restores it, which should resolve the issue. If you previously synced with iTunes or iCloud, you may be able to restore from your backup after recovery.

  1. Turn off your device. If you can't turn it off, press and hold the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at the same time and wait a few seconds for it to turn off.
  2. Plug the device's USB cable into your computer only.
  3. Hold down the device's Home button as you connect the USB cable to it.
  4. When you see the Connect to iTunes screen, release the Home button. If you don't see this screen, try steps 1 through 3 one more time.

You are the best! Thank you so much for posting this. I was so upset.....

I've had non-stop issues with my iPhone 5 since getting it last year. It *****. The customer support has been terrible. They have put me on hold for hours with a newborn....then they agreed to have someone call me back, and it's been months - no call back. The people in store are awful to deal with. I called the store because the genius bar appointment booking site was down and the rude woman who answered hung up on me.

Switching to BlackBerry next week now that I've caught wind of their promo for iPhone users.

I shattered my screen. It worked fine but the glass was cutting me, so I took it in (to a non-apple affiliated dealer), and had the screen replaced, after which it had the same problem you've described. First it wouldn't go past a black screen, then (when I tried the DFU reset instructions), it wouldn't go past the apple logo, except to turn the entire screen red before going back to a black screen.

I took it back to the shop who had fitted my screen, and asked them to test my old (shattered) screen which worked fine. It turns out it was the replacement screen they used. They tried a different one, and that one is turning on without problems. So that could be another possibility, in case it helps anyone.

well here's my issue...

I got a replacement iphone 5 against my earlier one (which had some battery and yellow spot on the screen issue) in the month of may'15..

it's not even 6 months and the "new" phone came up with newer problems..

firstly, the screen was becoming unresponsive and turning grey...

however it came back to it's senses on its own within some seconds...

now, the phone has gone black completely and is not responding at all..

I did pressed the home and power button as instructed in the earlier posts, but nothing has happened till date...

when connecting to the PC, iTunes was getting activated which means the phone was "working", however I couldn't do anything except restoring as passcode of the phone was being asked..

while charging also, the phone kept humming as it was in the vibration mode but nothing has happened after that...

is there a issue with the display? or there's any other h/w fault?

experts, kindly help..

THANK YOU! The recovery mode was a god send. That totally did it. To anyone else out there experiencing this issue, I have an iphone 5. I updated it to around ios 9. The battery life had just been depleting itself after a short use (like 1 day with no heavy usage). One day when I was just listening after a full charge (unplugged) the phone just shut down and would not turn on.

I would plug in my phone to the wall and leave it there for about 2 days straight and all it would have is that low battery icon symbol when plugged in. It just wouldn't turn on.

Yertu's solution helped. I did not know there was a recovery mode. I did what he said above

I tried just plugging my phone via usb to my computer and it would not connect to itunes or power on. When you plug in your phone to your computer (with itunes) and right before you plug in, you hold the home button, it'll show the itunes connect insignia on your pone. On itunes it'll ask for some recovery mode. I'm going through this right now as I speak.

I'm guessing it'll wipe the data from my phone, but at least this saves me from bricking the entire device.

Thanks for posting this Yertu! You are the man (or woman)!!! lol @yertu

Ah actually, we'll see if it does work. My previous post still stands. It finished updating from my computer, however, it is still not turning on.http://www.howtogeek.com/216839/what-to-do-when-your-iphone-or-ipad-won%E2%80%99 t-turn-on/

I went through the recovery protocol like in the link above...though it is still acting like my previous post

It's plugged in via usb, but it still won't turn on

So to whoever is out there, this is as far as I got. Looks like my phone is bricked... :/
