Why can't I update my 1st generation ipad past iOS version 5.1.1?

My 1st generation iPad crashed all the time. I can hardly use it any longer. Someone suggested updating to a new version of iOS. My current version is 5.1.1 & it keeps saying that is the latest version. Why can't I update it??

iPad, iOS 5.1.1

Ah. I should have known! Apple's answer is ALWAYS "Sorry, you need to buy a newer version." NO THANKS!! I guess I'll move on to a different tablet that doesn't cost me $500+ to only work properly for a year! (I got it as a gift right before the iPad 2 came out. Tried to exchange it & apple wouldnt let me. The thing has been collecting dust for a year now. Such a bunch of boloney!!) 😟 I was such a die hard Apple fan. Until I started to feel used & abused by them. My iPhone 4S (that i got right when it came out) has had nothing but problems! SHAME on Apple. You talk the talk but don't walk the walk. You're products are NOT the best out there.

The Original iPad is 4 years old. Just because you got it right before the iPad 2 doesn't mean its suddenly has newer hardware. Specs are still the same.

It was older hardware already when you got it and it was still supported with another major software update at that tme. from 4.3 to 5.

Why do you think it should continue to be supported now? Technology evolves.

ok, I understand the newer applications requiring newer hardware and so on. But can someone explain to me why does the "12 days of Christmas" application require at least iOS version 7.x? Why can't I install it on my ipad 1??? Perhaps it's state of the art coding involved, which my poor ipad cannot support no longer. Or is it Apple pushing me to toss it in trash and buy the latest ipad air? Hmmmm... not sure 😉

In theory you're right that Missy8818's device will "continue work as it always has" except that more and more apps will require updates that she won't be able to do. Before long, it really won't work like it always has.

I too share Missy8818's frustration. While I understand that technology marches on and that sooner or later hardware will be outmoded, 4 years just seems too short for a device that in every other way seems to work fine. In addition to the expense (which is not insignificant) it just seems like a terrible waste of resources.

My frustration is also in the lack of options.. I have a 15 yr old Win 98 machine that I could still use if I wanted to – albeit with outdated, old, but still functioning software. Sure using these older versions I give up newer bells and whistles, but that is a compromise I CAN CHOOSE to make if I wish to hold on a little longer to my hardware. Apple offers no such choice with the Ipad. Their timeline for obsolescence is your time line. Take it or leave it.

Not exactly. Just because apps have updates available, does not mean they are required. You will not be able to update apps to get the new features and looks but the version of the apps you currently have should work as they do right now even if they are no longer available in the app store. Just be sure to backup up your device and your iTunes library.

As with your iPad, the 15 year old Windows 98 machine will not be able to update to the most current versions of the apps (programs) either, including Microsoft's own Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player.

Not sure if this will help anyone, but I'll relate my experience with this. I currently use and Android phone and have an IPod touch that I love. I went to buy a tablet and decided to go with Apple. I bought a refurbished 1st generation for $250 vice a new Android tablet as with Apple you pay more but get more options for a more stable machine (or so I thought). I guess I got ripped off because 3/4th of the apps won't run on it or crash when I try to run them due to the older 5.1.1 OS. What I discovered is that if you have the 5.1.1OS you can't upgrade it in any way. This really surprised me. I went into this not having a real preference between Apple and its competitors, but I have to say I'm surprised and very disappointed with what I have. Even though its an older product, I expected most apps to work and for it to be stable. I'll be giving this one away and getting an Andriod tablet. If its anything like my Andriod phone it will be less expensive and function better. Sorry guys.

Phil0124.... the automobile evolves but the automobile makers still support every vehicle that remains on the road... why doesn't apple support all of their devices? Just a scam to make people spend more money.

The automobile makers certainly won't retrofit your older vehicle with a navigation system just because they are standard now.

New devices have upgraded hardware to suppost the new bells and whistles that older hardware just can't support.

The only people who believe that are the people who don't understand that technology advances and newer devices are more powerful than older devices.

Support how? Let you install an OS that your device can't run...or...just never advance the technology in their devices?

It is obvious to me you are too upset to be reasoned with.

Maybe iPads are not the device for you. You should look at the android tablets. You certainly won't have to worry about getting OS updates on those.

Best of luck to you.

Just to jump in here. I have an iPad 1 that is fully functional and that runs all of the apps that I want to run on it. It is not obsolete. It still works just fine. And as several posters have pointed out, there are links you can go to to download apps that are still compatible with your device. Also, you don't seem to get it that if the apps cannot be run on your device, and if there are no versions of the apps that you want that can be run on your device, your beef should be with the developers.

All Apple apps that were available when the iPad 1 was introduced run perfectly well on an iPad 1. Apps from other developers that no longer run on iOS 5.1.1 is by the choice of the developer who has decided to no longer support a version that will run on that level of iOS. Take it up with them. And don't be so hasty to write off your iPad. It works fine with the apps that run on it, and you have a large selection of apps that will do that.

And again, the world of technology is a fast-moving world. New developments, new functionality, new processing power, new advances occur every day in the world of technology. Your saying that a navigation system is not required to run a car is no different than us saying that some newly developed app is not required to run your iPad either. No matter how much you might want a navigation system in your car, you are not going to get it in a model that cannot support it. And no matter how much you want some brand new cutting-edge app on your iPad, you are not going to get it in a model that cannot support it.

If you want the latest and greatest, then you are going to have to have the latest and greatest hardware to run it.

Sorry, but that's just the way of the world of technology.
