Why can't I update my 1st generation ipad past iOS version 5.1.1?

My 1st generation iPad crashed all the time. I can hardly use it any longer. Someone suggested updating to a new version of iOS. My current version is 5.1.1 & it keeps saying that is the latest version. Why can't I update it??

iPad, iOS 5.1.1

Both my first generation iPad and Apple TV 2 work just fine. I only stopped using my ATV 2 last week. Yes, the number of apps available for an original iPad are limited but, for web browsing and email, it should still work.

If you're having technical problems with your ATV 2, post in the Apple TV forum. I'm sure someone will be happy to help. If you're just mad because it doesn't do the same thing as the ATV 4, well, you'll just need to either live with it or buy a new one. Technology moves on. Discussions of hacking Apple devices is not permitted here.

You will not be getting any response from an Apple employee here. This is a user-to-user technical support forum. Apple doesn't participate.

You are not going to get a guarantee from anyone that hardware that you purchase today will be compatible with future updates for 10 years. The developers decide what iOS levels they are going to make their apps compatible for.

The iPhone 1 was introduced in 2007, 8 years ago. The iOS for that very first iPhone in comparison to anything that anyone is running today is rudimentary at best. In order for a developer to provide you with compatible app for all of the innovations and technological improvements that have occurred over those 8 years, they would have to support anywhere from 4 to 8 versions of their software. Most developers simply do not have the manpower nor the funds to do anything like that.

The reality is that no one can predict the direction that technology is going to go in. Each iteration of the iOS incorporates the latest technology. Usually, that technology is so vastly different or new that major changes have to be made in the software that runs on it in order for it to work. Unlike a computer, which does not radically change from year to year, smartphones and tablets undergo major changes with each new release. So, your expectation of one of these types of products to remain "current" for more than a couple of years is simply not realistic. It's the way of technology.

Best of luck,

Phil0124.... the automobile evolves but the automobile makers still support every vehicle that remains on the road... why doesn't apple support all of their devices? Just a scam to make people spend more money.

No you don't need 6, 7 or 8 but you can hardly get any apps anymore that don't use them so you are stuck with old stuff. At least not having a navigation system doesn't mean that your vehicle is obsolete as the iPad first generation has become.

If apple would continue to update and support their technology, it wouldn't be the developers. Believe what you want, however most believe apple should support their older versions.
