Why can't I update my 1st generation ipad past iOS version 5.1.1?

My 1st generation iPad crashed all the time. I can hardly use it any longer. Someone suggested updating to a new version of iOS. My current version is 5.1.1 & it keeps saying that is the latest version. Why can't I update it??

iPad, iOS 5.1.1

Funny as you joined the thread.... I didn't join yours.... who can't be reasoned with? Everyone understands that technology advances. When you spend the money we do for these devices and after 5 years they are basically junk because the company isn't continuing to support it and has moved on so you have to buy a new device to keep up, that's what is disgusting. You must work for apple. As for downloading the version of the app that works, loads of them don't have versions that work even though they give you the option to download a lower version..... but when you do, the app doesn't work and sends you back to download the appropriate version... just a vicious cycle.
