App updates are not showing up in iTunes

I have a notification of 14 apps for updating on my iPad and 15 apps on my iPhone. Yet, nothing is appearing in iTunes on my MacBook Pro / OS 10.9. No matter how often I click "Check for Updates", I am told that there are no updates available for my library. When I check the version numbers of the apps in my iTunes that appear on my iPad & iPhone, they are a version below what is available.

This has only started happening in the last couple of days.

iTunes-OTHER, OS X Mavericks (10.9)

Can you open the apps that have the open icon next to them? If so, I think what you're seeing is normal, working procedure I.e. Once an app has been updated within the App Store, it will show there as evidence that the update has taken place. I don't how long that log of updates remains, but in my case it shows all the apps I've updated since Dec 6th.

Conversely, if you're saying all your updates are stuck, then there are ways, some perhaps a little adventurous such as deleting your download queue on your device using third party software, that you can use at your own risk.

Yeah, there are a few threads on how to clear the app update log. I guess your response means you've seen the thread at https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5330805?answerId=23637018022#23637018022&tstart=0#23637018

Tbh, if you know that a log is kept as normal, and you understand that it shows all recent updates, then I personally don't see a problem. I can't see it gobbling much space anyway, and if it clears entries after a couple of weeks, so much the better.

As for Apple swapping your phone, that strikes me as the level of support you get from techies these days - as someone who has just retired after a career in IT, I despair when all support want to do is re-image or replace a device rather than finding out what the fault is. Used to be that techies could do some diagnosis and often fix issues without a rebuild. Maybe we should call them swappies instead...

The listed linked thread concerns iCloud (iPad, iPhone) accounts in iOS7. That's not quite the exact problem. In my case and most of the thread posters, it seems, the problem has to do with the Mac version of iTunes running on Mac OS X Mavericks 10.9.1. Two things seem to happen to apps- they go missing or they don't update. I think these issues are related.

Missing apps.

This bug or whatever you care to call it has specifc components to it listed in the following. I listed work arounds:

  1. iTunes 11.1.3 (8) does not fully list all apps that used to be available previously on the app. NB, I sync my iOS devices in the Cloud so they must have disappeared on their own as those Cloud synced devices seem fine to me. The only real purpose the apps in iTunes serve is when syncing by cable attachment to i-Devices or as a download point to do multiple devices from the computer.
  2. It happens to several computers with similar configurations and began (at least I noticed it) at the same approximate time.
  3. The work around you would expect to use to fix a disappearing apps would merely be to redownload it/them. But therein lies the rub... Multiple downloads fail consistently, staying in "processing..." until you have to Force Quit the app.
  4. I painstakingly re-download them, one at a time, which works fine... until it doesn't. Then you have to force quit again.
  5. Other threads have suggested deleting the contents of the Downloads folder in my case it's located at, ~/Music/iTunes/iTunes/Downloads
This doesn't work nor make any difference to the anomaly/problem (wish it did, but it doesn't). What works is step #4 above. Note that the setting for the location of the iTunes folder is specified in iTunes preferences.

EXISTING apps that don't update.

  1. In the case of a missing update to an EXISTING app, the apps similarly (to the above scenario) refuse to update en masse (with the 'automatic' simultaneous download option box checked). They simply say, "processing..." finally and forever causing iTunes to hang in various modes, making the user Force Quit the app.
  2. The fix I found is to, again, painstakingly update the apps one by one (force quitting when the app doesn't complete the update process in a reasonable time). Subsequent apps will all give the same error until the queue is full, then they say, "waiting..." forever.
  3. Rinse and repeat noting the steps in the other case (of missing apps).
  4. YMMV.

Have done four different machines that way and I'm pretty tired of this game. If somebody has a complete fix (hint, hint Apple) let me know. Very FRUSTRATING! I will start a new thread with this information in the hope that someone will find a more permanent cure. These are only work-arounds and painstaking ones at that!

Good Luck, Y'all.

Hello,

Once again, no more updates on iTunes. As before. From France.

Agniola,

You can look at my thread here. I found and applied some of the fixes posted by various responders. In my case, with some success, I am now able to download apps to my Mac in iTunes.app. Until a specific cause is confirmed, however, I believe that this issue was more than my permissions or my internet connection or any one machine. Naturally Apple hasn't posted here...

Hi All,

I bought a new MBP and transferred all data successfully all excpt iTunes.

My problems were:

Cannot sync over WiFi, iTunes can't see iPhone or iPad unless they are connected by cable

No apps apprea in my Apps library

I can only update Apps on my iPhone or iPad

I cannot believe Apple would force you to use 1 ID only so I called Apple Care and they solved my problem...

1. In App Store, I had to make sure the Apple ID I used was the same as the one I sign on in iTunes. After I did this, the Sync over WiFi worked immediately.

2. To be double sure, I DeAuthorize and then ReAuthorize the computer

3. In iTune store, on the right, under Quick Links, click Purchased and then select Apps

All the apps are there but in iCloud becaue is shows a cloud with a down arrow.

Lower right corner, click Download All

Now, all my apps appear in Apps Library and the iTune Updates also work.

Sorry for the necropost, but I also had this problem, and found a solution.

My first clue was that "Wish List" (under Apps, the icon with 3 lines at the far right) required me to sign in again, but I was already signed in. Somehow, the authorization had gotten out of sync with iTunes.

When I signed in again, it said my Apple ID was only valid for the USA store, and it switched me to the USA store. Then, my app updates appeared!

Somehow, I must have gotten signed into another country somehow, when browsing. Strange.

My iTunes program also crashed when attempting to sync with my iPad, but that's an unrelated issue (I think). Regardless, this crash forced a restart of iTunes, which was part of my problem: iTunes hadn't been restarted in a while.

Hope this helps somebody. I will also do the fixes described on the other page here:

Re: iTunes for Mac v11.1.3 (8) hangs when updating, can sometimes force apps to disappear!

I was having the same issue. Until i realised that

1. My default country was changed and not the one i access usually with my account. I Was also not signed in.

2. For some reason apple itunes was thinking this is a new device.

Once i signed in it asked me if it should change the country to the default one with my a/c. I said yes and then it wanted to verify payment information saying its a new computer. Once i did all app updates appeared.
