HP OfficeJet 8600 Plus All-in-One Won't Scan in Mavericks via WiFi

I spent a good chunk of today with HP trying to figure out why my brand new HP OfficeJet 8600 Plus wouldn't scan with Mavericks. They had me startup and shutdown my MBP several times, doing the same with my printer/scanner and my AirPort Extreme. The printer/scanner wouldn't scan with HP Scan nor with Image Capture. I went through 3 levels of tech help to no avail.

They suggested I call Apple and I did. Apple was helpful, and basically tried to make it work, but again to no avail. Finally, it occured to me to try the USB and it scanned, but only with Image Capture and not HP Scan.

The printer part works just fine by the way. The scanner will scan to a USB stick also. But network printing is out.

HP wanted me to ask Apple why Scan Sharing didn't exist any more in System Preferences. The Apple tech didn't know.

So, I have a really nice MBP and a really nice HP 8600 Plus, but I can't scan effectively.

Another issue: While installing the HP Mavericks software the follow error popped up:

System extension cannot be used

The system extension “/System/Library/Extensions/IOFireWireWDHID.kext” was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it, or contact the product’s vendor for an update.

I know I'm not alone.

Just bought the HP 8600 Pro. I'm running 10.8.2 (not Mavericks) and can't get their install software to install the printer. HP had me download & install Apple's 2.16.1 driver update and I still get the followng Error message every time I run the installer and try "Add" the printer:

Any thoughts as to why this is happening?

RE: My original post. After hours trying to install the software for the HP 8600, running 10.8.2 every time it returned an error message: "broken pipe." I searched HP chats and found an HP technician who suggested the following:

Open Printers & Scanners under System Preferences and hold the Option key down while clicking in the left column (white area). Pop up window asks if you want to reset Printing & Scanning preferences. Say "Yes" enter your Password and BANG you can now add the printer manually (not thru the cr&p software from HP) in the window.

Under Mavericks, the original install disk from HP installed to a point (HPs's software & driver) then quit unexpectantly. But I was able to manually install the printer thru the Printers & Scanners app in System Preferences. The fax printer does not install, but who needs this anyway? All good.

I had trouble with my HP8600 when I went to Mavericks a few months ago. I downloaded the new drivers but couldn't get scanning to work right. So, I reset the printer system and then reinstalled the printer and fax and it worked. I had to download the newest software for the scanner and then it also worked. Before it worked but the scanned image was not right.

I added a second HP8600 to our WiFi system on my wife's MBP and it was working just fine. Last night my older HP8600 printer stopped working. I had both her printer and mine installed in both of our MBPs and neither of them were working. I fought the problem for three hours uninstalling and installing them over and over again. I reinstalled the drivers from scratch. I went through the Wireless setup on the HP8600s again and again and everything looked OK, passwords OK, etc., but I couldn't get the MBPs to communicate with either printer. When adding the printers, most of the time they would not show up in the list of "near printers" or in the expanded list if you selected add printer again. Often when I could get one of them to install, it could not communicate with the printer to report ink level, or to go to the printer website for detailed info about the printer. That actually pulls up a lot of info from the printer itself.

Then it dawned on me that I had a communication problem. I'm using a four month old AirPort Extreme 11ac and it was worked very well, but I had problems installing a firmware update a few weeks ago, and finally (with help from this Forum) got it working. So, I uplugged the power to the AirPort Extreme. Waited about 30 seconds and plugged it back in. After going through it's startup procedure. I went back to the System Preferences and tried again to add the printers and they were all listed in the available printers to install. I was able to install them both on both MBPs. Using Air Print and they are both working today on my WiFi network.

So, I was blaming the printers and printer drivers and kept installing and uninstalling them etc. The problem was with my WiFi router. So, if anyone else is fighting this "ghost" problem with Wireless printers, try cycling your WiFi router and it might fix the communication problem. I suspect it has something to do with it's seeing the various components on my network and must have somehow got confused with these two printers on the same network. Not sure why, but it worked. Wish I'd tried that first. So now I can print from either MBP or from the iPad 3 using AirPrint.

Now I just need to get a two year old Samsung ML-2525W working on my WiFI network. It doesn't have AirPrint, but it should work with the Ethernet connection to the WiFi router. That may be a bigger challenge and I see some good advice in that Forum addressing that printer.

Lots of us have blamed HP or Apple for having bad drivers, etc. It took them a while to get things right wtih Mavericks, but now printing, scanning and faxing all are working for me on the HP8600s.

Thanks for this. A lifesaver! I spent HOURS trying to fix the scanning problem, including almost 2 hours with the friendly HP staff in the Philippines who did everything you listed above to no avail. Ging back to the 12.23.0 HP driver did the trick. Now I have one remaining issue--I can scan wirelessly from teh computer (never had a problem with a hard wire USB connection) but I can't get the scanner to scan using the touchpad on the scanner. It wants me to enable scanning to my computer with the HP Utility--BUT, the HP utility only has items for "Scan to email" and "Scan to Network Folder" not "Scan to computer" as it formerly did. Any ideas?

Wow ! Great work HP. I abandonned and used a USB cable to do the job - it worked. In my case, the printer / scan is at my job, so I wasn't excited about spending hours download and uninstalling crappy software. In all cases, I like the Apple way - only drivers, no manufacturer software ( loaded with other things you don't want ).

This printer failed.
