Mac has suddenly been running very slow lately

My 15" mid 2010 Macbook Pro has been suddenly moving very slowly. I was using Google Chrome a lot, but then saw that that could slow things down.

Here are my specs

I have also had troubles with my Mac running slow recently. I downloaded that program and here are my results.

The two most obvious problems are Intego and CleanMyMac2.

Start by removing Intego according to its instructions. Intego offers no obvious way to uninstall it, so if you are unable to locate an uninstaller program then you must download its installer .dmg file which contains its uninstaller. Unfortunately Intego's uninstaller is not completely effective and leaves components behind, but they ought to be inert and should no longer affect your Mac.

Of the popular "anti-virus" programs tested with Mavericks, Intego's was the only one I considered to be unacceptable due to its horrendous effect on performance. It's worse than even more notorious products.

Next, uninstall CleanMyMac:

CleanMyMac2 belongs to a broad category of time- and money-wasters capable of causing system corruption that can only be rectified by reinstalling OS X, restoring from a backup, or completely erasing your system and rebuilding it from the ground up. Get rid of it and test your Mac for operation. If it does not perform normally, the possibility that CleanMyMac resulted in system corruption must be considered.

According to its web siteCleanMyMac2 is supposed to uninstall itself:

"The easiest way to completely uninstall CleanMyMac 2 is by using CleanMyMac 2 on itself.

To remove CleanMyMac 2 from your Mac:

  1. Open CleanMyMac 2.
  2. Proceed to the Uninstaller module.
  3. Find CleanMyMac 2 in the list of apps found by the module.
  4. Click Complete Removal in the Smart Selector panel to mark the application file and all it related items for removal.
  5. Click Uninstall.
  6. Confirm that you are going to remove the app in the newly appeared message.

That's it!"

Apparently it may not be that simple though, as at least one user reported that it did not work, and required manual removal: Extreme Battery Drainage

Whatever damage it inflicted by it or similar programs apparently required more work to correct. In such cases an "erase and install" followed by laboriously migrating individual apps and files may be the most expedient solution.

There are other problems including PACE, an anti-piracy app that does not appear to have been updated for several OS X versions. I do not know what app you may have that requires it, but Avid Pro Tools is one I recall that may. If you need that product consult its developer for support.

Google Chrome is a notorious resource hog that has always performed poorly on Macs, and a growing number of complaints seems to indicate that it performs even worse with Mavericks. Chrome is extremely invasive and modifies a Mac in ways that other browsers do not. If you decide to retain Chrome, you must accept the resulting degradation in system performance, battery life, and overall stability.

Uninstall those problematic system modifications and evaluate the results.

Ok yeah I'm done using Chrome and I am pretty sure I got rid of Clean My Mac 2.

With Intego I brought up the uninstaller program and there was nothing to select to take it off though.

Dec 16, 2013 4:56 PM in response to pchopz23

pchopz23 I apologize in advance for what I'm about to say, but installing garbage like Intego or CleanMyMac is the quickest way to take an exquisitely designed and robustly engineered product like a MacBook Pro and turn it into a steaming pile of dung. To fix the problems resulting from their use may require that you restore your Mac to the state it was in prior to installing them. That will certainly fix the problems, and it may the the most expedient solution, but it comes at the expense of losing everything else contained on your Mac unless you created a backup prior to installing those products.

Here is what I can offer: I installed Intego for the purposes of testing it, and upon completion I used Intego's uninstaller to delete the program. The uninstaller left components behind but rendered the program itself inert. Contrary to this experience, your report indicates that Intego components remain that are affecting your Mac's performance. If you used Intego's uninstaller and they remain present, I have no explanation for their presence. Your recourse is to contact Intego for assistance – which is very likely to be unhelpful given the fact their own uninstaller did not work – or to methodically search your Mac and tediously eradicate each component manually. Doing that carries the risk of inadvertently deleting a required system component, but if you are willing to accept that risk search for likely named files in each of the locations in the list that is to follow.

To navigate to each location quickly, select (triple-click to select the entire line), then control-click and from the contextual menu that appears, select Services > Reveal in Finder. If you suspect the file or folder revealed is related to Intego, drag it to the Desktop and test the effects of its deletion. It is possible for a running process to recreate a file you dragged to the Desktop, so recursive attempts may be required.

Back up your system prior to proceeding with any modifications. Deleting a component required by a program or process other than the one you are attempting to delete will obviously cause undesired effects and could render your Mac unusable.

The above is not an exhaustive list, is not in any particular order of importance, and not all of them may be present on your Mac. Only a developer can know the manner in which their software modifies a Mac, and many of them choose to ignore Apple's published developer guidelines.

Repeat the above and search for anything likely to be related to CleanMyMac2. CleanMyMac is capable of removing system components that must not be removed, and cannot be removed through normal means, which means eradicating CleanMyMac alone may not undo effects resulting from its use. Uninstall it and evaluate the results. If using CleanMyMac resulted in system corruption, you are likely to recover by reinstalling OS X from the Recovery partition. That does not erase your User accounts and other data, However, CleanMyMac may have affected other programs you may have installed, which will require reinstalling them from their original sources.

Repeat the above and search for anything likely to be related to PACE, assuming nothing you are using requires it.

After considering all the above you may decide an "erase and install" to be the least objectionable of all the unattractive alternatives facing you.

It's easy for me to say since I don't presume to know what you use your Mac for, or what's on it, but if it were mine I would erase it completely and rebuild it from the ground up. Otherwise you are facing a lot of tedium that may not be successful anyway.

I don't intend to be presumptuous but I assume that whatever you require your Mac to do, it can't possibly be to waste time with junk like Intego or CleanMyMac.

To erase and install OS X read: OS X: How to erase and install. After that, restore your essential documents and files from your backup, and reinstall the productivity, entertainment or other software you need from their original sources. It's a good idea to verify that whatever you install has been verified to be compatible with Mavericks before reinstalling it. Developers big and small have all had the better part of a year to prepare.

I just went through my library and tried to find as many of those as possible. Couldn't find them all though but now I just ran the scan again
