Want to convert .aiff files (8 cds) to .aac format without duplicating

I ripped an 8=cd set to .aiff and added these to my iTunes library, but forgot how large it is on my iPad. Is there a way to create a "mirror" of the 8 cd set in .aac format? If I convert tunes per cd, I end up with duplicates in that folder (1., 1., 2., 2.). I'd ideally like one .aiff version of the set and one in .aac. I'd relabel them accordingly, and also sync accordingly.

If that's too hard I would be happy with just substittuting the .aiff files with .aac ones. Not sure that is possible.

I imagine I could copy the files to an x-drive, delete what i have in the iTunes folder, and then reimport as .aac. Perhaps that's easiest?

Thanks.

Thanks for the helpful replies. I guess I used to rip to iTunes but then decided to archive copies and then keep a converted version in iTunes for portability. I archived .aiff's, and perhaps should have made them into .flac files (IF that would have kept the tags intact).

Odd that iTunes can read the tags from the CDs but not the .aiff's. Must be some other meta-data files in CD's that don't carry over to that format.

CDs do not have any tags.

iTunes uses Gracenote to get the info fro commercial CDs.

but not the .aiff's.

It reads and uses AIFF tags just fine (if they are in the file).

If these are commercials CDs, they will show up as AIFF (on a Mac) and WAV (on Windows) but they are really just PCM encoded and aren’t really ehe same as a computer file.

and these AIFF showing up on a commercial CD will not have any tags.
