Crashes/reboots/restarts while on sleep

This thread is exclusive to people who have spontaneous crashes/reboots/restarts while their Mac is in sleep. (this is usually connected to having a USB external hard drive plugged in the computer while on sleep)

In simple words, you are experiencing this problem:

1) You put your Mac to sleep

2) You return to it after some time and you find it on.

3) On screen you find this error message "Your computer restarted because of a problem." or similar, and in the report of the error message the Event is "Sleep Wake Failure" or similar.

If your Mac does not wake from sleep this is NOT the thread for you, please don’t write here.

If your Mac is experiencing black screens and freezes while waking up from sleep this is NOT the thread for you, please don’t write here.

This thread is a continuation to the “New rMBP sleep/wake failure crashes” thread.

I’m trying to better understand this problem. Allow me to ask you some questions. After you answer the first 5 question, feel free to write freely in this thread. (as longs as you are pertinent to this issue)

Please answer this questions carefully. If we get enough people to answer, I will personally slap this thread on the face of every Apple employee I can find, so they will have to stop saying "we never heard of this issue" and we can get a quick fix or a quick replacement if this is indeed an hardware issue.

PLEASE ANWSER THIS QUESTIONS BEFORE WRITING IN THIS THREAD FOR THE FIRST TIME

I suggest you copy and paste the questions below in your reply, and replace the text ANSWER with your answer.

I believe I know when the sleep wake fault happens (at least on my machine).

Macbook pro late 2011, 8 gb ram, 2.2Ghz Intel Core i7, 750 gb HD

For me the problem seems to be when I disconnect the secondary monitor.

If I first put the computer to sleep and then I disconnect the monitor, when the computer wakes up usually crashes after a few minutes (having failed at waking up correctly; I get a black monitor and lit keyboard, but cannot see the login window).

BUT if I first disconnect the secondary monitor and then put the computer to sleep, no problem after waking it up.

So at least in my case it seems to be a problem of when the secondary monitor is disconnected.

Nothing else helped. I hope this post helps somehow.

1. Which Mac do you have? (If you have this issue with multiple machines, list them here)

Late 2013 27" iMac - 3.4 Ghz intel i5 8GB RAM OSX 10.9.4

Late 2009 17" MBP 2.8Ghz 8GB RAM OSX 10.9.4 -> DOES NOT EXPERIENCE THIS ISSUE

2. When did the problem start? If you had Mountain Lion installed on this machine, did the problem start when you updated to Mavericks?

2 months after I bought it.

3. Did you have your Mac replaced from Apple because of this issue? If yes, does the new machine still have the problem?

Not yet, but considering it if OSC 10.10 doesn't fix the issue.

4. Does your machine crash/reboot while on sleep only if you have an external hard drive connected?

NO, crashes/reboots regardless.

5. Does your machine crash/reboot even if you uncheck "Enable Power Nap" in Preferences, Energy Saver? (before answering this, check that you have updated OS X to 10.9.1 and that you have unchecked Power Nap in both the Battery and Power Adapter tabs in Energy Saver)

YES.

I hope these answers help in your research!

1. Which Mac do you have? (If you have this issue with multiple machines, list them here)

MacBookPro11,2 10.9.4

2. When did the problem start? If you had Mountain Lion installed on this machine, did the problem start when you updated to Mavericks?

Since i've had this machine (about 2 months)

3. Did you have your Mac replaced from Apple because of this issue? If yes, does the new machine still have the problem?

No, never had a mac before. Wondering if I should go back to PC :/

4. Does your machine crash/reboot while on sleep only if you have an external hard drive connected?

Yes it reboots during sleep while unplugged.

I usually disconnect the external HD before closing the lid. Here is the thing, I always connect it through Windows. I have Bootcamp and VMWare Fusion installed. I always thought this problem was because of Windows causing the issues, but looks like I am not the only one with this issue.

I just now unchecked Power Nap and Wake for Network Access. Will report back tomorrow if that worked.

OPTIONAL QUESTIONS

6. Do you have an external hard drive connected via USB? If yes, write the manufacturer name and model name of the drive. (example: Western Digital My Book)

Yes but I almost always disconnect it before closing the lid. I have the machine plugged into a Belkin dock during the day at work, connected to two monitors. Each night, I unplug everything including the hard drive, put it in Sleep mode, close the lid and take it home.

The HD is actually an internal HD from an old PC laptop. OMG it IS a Western Digital (didn't realize) WD1600BEVS! I connect it via an SATA wire.

7. Do you have a network connected drive? (like Time Capsule or an external hard drive connected to an AirPort Extreme, or a NAS)

No

8. Do you have Time Machine Enabled?

No

9. Do you have Crashplan installed?

No

10. How much time does it usually take for the first crash/reboot to happen, after you put the computer on sleep?

Haven't checked the time before, but last night, it happened about 3 hours 15 minutes afterwards.

N/A

Aug 21, 2014 6:40 AM in response to marianney

Ok so last night I brought my computer home. I had turned off Enable Power Nap but also had not plugged in my external HD all day.

The computer started up just fine! But now I did not know which action solved the problem. While using the computer last night, I plugged in my external HD.

This morning, there was another crash message when I got into work. So I guess it's the ext. HD causing the issues.

I have a late 2013 rMBP and only started having the issues back in July. I never have any external HD's plugged in constantly or while the computer is sleeping. I've tried all the tricks mentioned in this thread with little luck.

I though Yosemite might be my saving grace so last night I completely wiped my computer and did a clean install of Yosemite (Mac OSX 10.10). The only thing I did, which I wish I hadn't was I migrated my applications and files back onto the new install.

Last night I let the computer go to sleep (lid closed) with the WiFi turned off but Chrome was running. This morning I checked and it had actually crashed but not restarted at all (this maybe because I didn't have automatic login turned on).

Needless to say my attempt to rid myself of the issue failed. Next I will try a real clean install of Yosemite. No migrating over applications and settings.

If that fails as well. I'll purchase Apple Care and get them to figure it out. As I'm self employed with no Apple Store nearby I can't be without a computer. That's my pain point right now.

Really annoyed with this issue. Apple need to pull their socks up and sort it out. This is the second or third bug i've had thats ruined my experience with Macs. Previously I had a Wifi bug with Mavericks which didn't get sorted for 6-8 months or until Yosemite came out and that was a repeat of a bug from over half a decade ago.....JUST LIKE THIS ONE!

Nov 2, 2015 10:20 AM in response to hailalistair

So here we are months and months later....

I have narrowed the issue down to this.

I have a Native Instruments Rig Kontrol 3 USB device. This is a USB 2.0 Audio Interface that is also a guitar midi footswitch for use with Guitar Rig amp modelling software.

If I have this device plugged in and my iMac goes to sleep, after around 60-75 minutes later the iMac will reboot itself.

If I unplugged this device from my iMac then around 60-75 minutes later while sleeping my iMac will have no issues whatsoever.

After that time you can hear the hard disk spin up inside as if to temporarily wake to collect data or do some background services.

I believe that this is a power issue where the iMac is powering up momentarily to do it's business an hour into sleeping but it's either not giving enough power to wake the USB device or the USB device stops responding causing the crash.

This has been tested many times and isn't 100% repeatable.
