Where is OS X 10.9 free download?

I have 10.6.8 and can't open 10.9.1 until I have 10.9 which doesn't seem to exist anywhere on Apple as a free download......help?

That's the OS X 10.9.1 installer you download from the Apple website, not from the Mac App Store. Remove the OS X 10.9.1 installer now, open the Mac App Store and download OS X Mavericks.

Do you know how to open the Mac App Store?

Yes...and I just got what I was doing wrong....clicking on the wrong ICON at the app store....gads....that's what Christmas and being up since 5a.m. does...

so it IS downloading...though I don't know how long that will take....and thanks....this one DOES look right.

The OS X Mavericks installer takes about 5.29 GB, so it should take several hours. You are welcome, and merry Christmas!
