why won't safari 7.o.1 work with silverlight and netflix using mavericks?

Netflx requires MS Silverlight. After installation Safari leads to the Netflix prompt "thanks for downloading, please restart your browser"--restarting browser doesn't work, nor does restarting computer. Netflix works with Silverlight on Firefox however. So, it seems like a Safari problem. Netflix techs couldn't help. I'm using a MacBook Air with Mavericks. Thank you for any advice on getting Safari (7.0.1) to work with Silverlight with Netflix.

Netflix works here (OS X 10.9.1). I seem to have a Silverlight plug-in that was installed in 2012. Since I use the latest version of Safari, that seems to rule Safari out as a factor.

I am sorry I have no suggestions as I know absolutely nothing about the Netflix or Silverlight software.

I see. The plot thickens. All tabs or pages should reload, yet they're not. Do they fail to reload regardless of the number of open tabs?

I'd avoid Chrome regardless of any suspected memory problems or other limitations. Chrome is a notorious resource hog. Starting in Safe Mode may yield useful information.

How much memory does your MBA have?

Open Safari's error console. Post a screenshot of Netflix with the error console open and "Errors" selected on the right as in the following:

User uploaded file

Most pages will have errors and warnings, but Netflix isn't showing any errors when I use it (the error console is empty). Being unable to duplicate the problem I can't tell you what to look for, and any errors that appear on yours may not make any sense to me.

As you know there is no quick fix for defective MBA memory, but any number of problems are possible if RAM is unreliable.

this is the warning I get on the "watch" page. No errors are listed. From what I know of css this shouldnt effect anything.

Yes I realize the RAM could be a problem and intend to replace it as soon as I am able. I did have the problem before I knew I had a RAM problem, this is not to say it didn't exist just that it showed no symptoms.

A fix I found for Safari was to block Silverlight in the firewall settings.

How to do that:

1. System Preferences > Security & Privacy.

User uploaded file

2. Click the Lock and enter your password to make changes.

User uploaded file

3. Click Firewall Options.

User uploaded file

4. Finally click the +, and add Silverlight Preferences to the list, then block all incoming communications.

This worked for me with Safari, however I haven't found a fix for Google Chrome yet.

I had this problem occur with Mavericks, which I am running on my MacBookPro 17.

First thing I tried was downloading Firefox. Netflix worked fine on Firefox. So why not with Safari?

Second, I tried uninstalling and reloading Silverlight.

Deleted /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/Silverlight.plugin

Deleted /Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Silverlight folder

Deleted /Library/Application Support/Microsoft/PlayReady folder

Deleted /Users/<MyAccount>/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Silverlight folder

I then brought up Safari, attempted to run a movie, and it reloads Silverlight.

This failed. Reboot made no difference.

Third, I tried this little trick:

It turns out that the issue is with MacBookPros that contain two graphics processors. Silverlight and Safari insist on using the Integrated processor, but if you use an external monitor, only the Discrete processor is used.

I usually use just the external monitor, with the MacBookPro closed.

The trick: I turned off the monitor and opened the MacBookPro clamshell. Internally, it switches to the lower power Integrated graphics processor for the MacBookPro monitor. I then ran the Netflix movie without a problem. While it was running, I turned the monitor back on, and the movie kept running!

Fourth: Apple released an update to Safari to 7.0.3.

I updated Safari, deleted Silverlight (as shown above), rebooted, and ran Netflix to reinstall Silverlight, and rebooted again.

Failed!!

Final: The version of Silverlight being installed by Netflix is 5.1.30214 What if I could find an older version?

I had a backup I created before upgrading to Mavericks. It had Silverlight 5.1.10411, created April 11, 2012.

I deleted Silverlight again from my machine, and copied this old version from the backup.

Netflix is working again!!

Yes, I had exactly the same problem: Safari 7.0.3, OS X 10.9.2, Macbook Pro Retina, Thunderbolt display, Netflix won't play in Safari when Macbook is connected to Thunderbolt display. Reinstalling Silverlight has no effect.

Unplug the display and Netflix works just fine on the laptop screen. Plug the display back in and Netflix continues to run.

This is obviously a bug, but at least I now have a work-around. Thanks Mike! Now if you can only solve my Thunderbolt USB not working after a reboot.

This is a first for me; posting to a forum. However, I rapidly discovered Xfinity members are flooding the majority of support sites to include same problem,

looping 'thank you…' page post successful upgrade install of silverlight plugin released JULY 25,2014. Hence, virtually every support site keeps to addressing

non Netflix specfic problmes coupled with post silverlight latest upgrade.

I'm hoping the time invested over 48 hours later of my efforts all proving futile thus far, I am sincerely hoping I can learn how to readily (I strongly suspect)

fix this problem, that is, once one knows the 1,2,3, steps to resolve this looping 'thank you..' silverlight plugin page after a 'sucessfull install of said plugin.

I am genuinely fried, aggravated, to cut to the quick, post all the 101 steps to clear cash, clean uninstall reinstall etc etc , I did the last time earlier today uninstall silverlight's latest JULY 25/2014 upgraded plugin via following your 2 step process for clean uninstall.

MY SPEC's generally: Mac, SAFARI, Mt LION, LAPTOP; 2 days later, fried & frustrated after I followed your 2 step clean UNINSTALL of the latest silverlight

plugin version JULY 25 2014 I am still getting a LOOPING 'thank you" page that follows 'succesful install of silverlight's plugin.

Netflix via SAFARI each time I go to view a movie up pops the 'thank you..' repeatedly.

** I not only clean uninstalled 4 times including latest early this evening err yesterday now, folioing your instructions here within this support forum

also, prior over the past 48 hours I did all the 101 steps; clearing cache (even via terminal to ensure as much) rebooting, ensuring SAFARI was closed each time, NO ANTI VIRUS program running, nothing else in background other than bare bones basic that are usually there throughout the time I've owned this laptop, all and all…..nothing I can discern beyond that hence, lead me to next support step which is to seek online help. Typically within minutes if I do find myself in such a position, I've got problem resolved (with 1 exception I'll mention in a moment) and on said rare occasions usually problem(s) resolved.

However, this latest silverlight upgrade (APRIL 2014 was the 2nd last one, and now JULY 25, 2014 latest presents this issue)…evidently it turns out

most every search engine highlights a flood of Xfinity members that have same and similar looping esp. included issues also preening them from viewing movies. Hence, majority of sites past 48 hours out here that offer MAC specific support w/silverlight plugin issues and ALL other OS platforms

especially relating to inability to view streaming video since silverlight plugin latest upgrade, I've discovered a mass Xfinity flood overtaking silverlight plugin

support sites and irrespective of however specific my search engine details are (shortcut tips applied and included )…most always continues to present pages upon supportive pages for that community.

At this point I've landed here following my efforts to be even more specific to MAC SAFARI ONLY coupled with silverlight latest plugin (JULY 2014)

** netflix stuttering is an ongoing issue I've never found an effective resolve for; no movies have ever streamed smoothly less that 2-3 second constant

stutter. NO stuttering goes on however on flash player driven sites.

** Additional relevant note, even tho Safari is still presenting the looping 'thank you…' sans silverlight plugin latest upgrade OPERA browser

ran movies via Netflix as it should, normally, albeit stuttering continues.

In my experience, over ample number of years, and as an end user who embraces Opera as my 'other' browser by default, I've learned that if OPERA is

having an issue same as whatever other browsers then it's a significantly larger, more involved issue and irrespective of the OS

** 101's I did complete them repeatedly I say again, meaning clearing cache, no anti virus programs running or any others of any kind that are not typically

running (minimal very much so) when I boot up my Laptop. Again, I followed your steps and one more notable mention even after I did that last 2 step

process you offered out here for clean uninstall of silverlight when I went to REINSTALL silver lights 2nd last version, APRIL 2014 that was running

fine in that when i clicked to watch a movie via Netflix it did what it's suppose to, presented the respective movie/streaming media silverlight plugin driven.

Yet even after the clean install per your steps, while the process confirms a successful install of silverlight (APRIL 2014)
NOW the looping 'thank you…" page is still happening. I cannot revert back therefore which would be the temporary default task until a later point in time

when the upgrade & resolves are readily accessible and meantime I would have been able to keep things moving as it were, without this problem.

However, all roads now, again, have proved futile.

I greatly would appreciate help with the primary problem foremost, so that I can once again view movies via Netflix.

I appreciate peoples time and consecutive input in advance, sincerely i do.

I have a client who has that same problem, the thing I found out is that when you this: "Safari, preferences, security, then make sure "allow plug-ins" is checked." it works fine, but the YouTube videos or any other video from the web won't play, it's as if the switch is reversed, I have to have both unchecked to watch YouTube but to have Netflix we have to do the above mentioned." funny stuff, a newer OS (Yosemite) works fine on his daughter's mac-book.

I have tried running the latest version of Silverlight to watch Netflix content on my Macbook Pro with the Safari 7.1.6 update installed and had nothing but problems with websites not fully opening or security messages when I tried ("Safari cannot verify the identity of this website") as well as a loss of ability to open App Store. I worked for days trying to find a fix even calling Apple and working with tech support. The only "fix" that is working for me (so far) was to do a complete erase and reinstall of OSX 10.9.5, ignore the Safari 7.1.6 update notice from the App Store, and using Firefox to run Netflix.

why won't safari 7.o.1 work with silverlight and netflix using mavericks?
