Why does my FaceTime keep saying it's connecting, then fail?

I always FaceTime friends and family on my MacBook Pro, but recently it has been failing, both when sending and recieving calls. It says connecting, and then it fails; occasionally it says reconnecting and then fails after. I went to the Apple store recently, and all it needed was an update and it was working great. Less than a week later, it's back on that same routine.. HELP?!

p.s. I have checked for updates, and it is all updated.

Same thing here. I've been using Facetime without problems (mostly) for a few years. The sound would drop out for no reason from time to time but it basically worked. Now (since sometime in Dec 2013) I can not connect at all, "connection failed" everytime. It happens on my iPad, my MacPro (Mavericks) with a usb camera and a Macbook Pro (Mavericks). None of them work. I've had to go back to iMessages (or iChat) using AIM for video chat (which does work although not as clear as Facetime was).

I don't get it. Very frustrating.

P.S. I've used Macs since 1989. I like it when things just work!!!

Hi,

I do have the same problem and it started just after christmas. Facetime will connect and then before a connection is established, it will just tell me, that the connection failed. I have the same behaviour on my iMac and on my iPad. Neither any software or hardware has changed on my side nor on the side of my mom, whom I try to facetime. We did facetime almost on a daily basis for a year without any problems and the very same set up.

I have never been on anything else but Macs, MacSE in 89 was my first computer, and I do hate it, when things just don't work! I am starting to get really angry about this!

I am facetiming from Germany to the US, where my mom lives. Could that be an issue now, where we know, that the NSA is even spying on Angela Merkels cell phone? This might sound silly, but at this point, I am so clueless that any explanation would make sense.

Something that used to work just fine, doesn't anymore and there seems to be no solution for this. I am very frustrated, too!

BTW: Video chat via iChat does still work without a problem! Unfortunately, I don't have a computer at home anymore and there is no iChat for iPad, so I am stuck with Facetime.

Hi,

after doing the following, Facetime is working again for us:

On both sides, we did open Facetime, went to the Preferences, turned Facetime off, quit the app, rebooted the computer, launched Facetime again, went to prefs., turned Facetime on again, logged in with apple ID and password and now all seems to be working again as it should and used to work before.

I don't know, if Apple did fix something on their side also, but it is worth a try! BTW, it is stated in the Apple support document to turn Facetime off and on, but at first, I did not think, that this could do the trick.

Cheers

Peter

I called, "Apple Customer Care at 800-APLCARE" and was told there are a select number of people having problems with Facetime connection due to an Apple server problem. They said the fix will be a week or two. They recommended finding a Facetime alternative - Wow... REALLY? Maybe if enough people call and complain, they'll do something about this problem. With what we spend for their products, I'm sure they can afford to purchase a new server!

Again, the 24/7 number is 1-800-APL-CARE!
