No, Chris this this works I had to do this myself so I know for a fact that it will still work. I’ve actually done it several times for family members and friends
Yes, it works, but it's not Activation Lock, the original subject of this thread. If the device is asking for a four or six digit numerical code, this is a passcode, and as you say can be got past by erasing and resetting the device. If however the device is showing a screen like that shown at right, this is Activation Lock and without the required ID and password being supplied by the person who set the lock there is no way whatever of bypassing it. That was the situation the OP found himself in.

I have found phones before and with a lock on it I can't open it to see who it belongs to
Do you even stop to think before you write this kind of crap... It's not stolen, buy you can't find out who it belongs to...
Google "theft by finding". It's not yours. Even if you turn it over to the police and no one claims it, there is NO WAY for you to remove the activation lock.
Don't like that? Too bad. Kill switches like Activation lock are quickly becoming legally required on smart-phones, regardless of who manufactures them.
Sounds like you need to read more on it. Because your wrong... it was turned over to the police and now turned back to me as no one claimed it in the set time. By law it is now mine as all attempts to find the owner has been completed that is required.

Okay. Since KiltedTim was wrong, how are you going to remove the activation lock now that you own it?
Nothing they can do. They should have checked prior to taking the return.

Lost items became stolen as soon as someone finds them and decides to keep it. It is now stolen by you. Hand it over to the police, it is their responsibility to deal with it.

Go find the person who locked it, ask them to unlock it.
They sell the product! Failing g to support it is just a way of forcing sales. There are myriad reasons why folk may not have access to original information or paperwork. Presumably deceased estates, traumatic injuries, locked up in foreign lands etc were beyond the 'great innovators' imagination?
Recovered from theft with the thief having activated the lock?
How is any of this Apple's problem? Not once they have the money I suppose.
How can folk be so clever with technology yet so stupid about life?
Take it, and proof of ownership and ID to an Apple Store.
Yes. Apple sells it. Their responsibility is to the original purchaser of the device. There are ways to deal with all of the examples you gave. Apple will NOT help if you can not prove ownership of the phone or the account used to lock it.
If you device is is just Apple ID locked, just go into an apple genuis store with ID or alternatively call Apple support and they should be able to help you out and get your device going again (Just remember to take proof of purchase eg Paypal if you purchased it from Ebay)
APple support got my iPad going again over the phone and they didn't even ask me proof of purchase even though I kept my Reciepts.

There are two ways and ONLY two ways to get the ICloud lock removed. If you have proof of ownership (original receipt) Apple will gladly remove the lock. I did this personally and the genius' were pleasant and we're glad to assist in removing the iCloud lock. The only other way to remove it is to contact the orginal owner of the device and request them remove the device from their Apple account. If you don't have original proof of purchase or can contact the original owner, you have a paper weight!! That's life! People, check used devices BEFORE your purchase them. Do not fall for gimmick lock removal websites. They are ALL FAKE!!
Hello all. I read the entire thread and it only deals with lost/stolen instances.
What if I do know the owner? What are the actual steps she needs to take to make sure her account is no longer linked to the phone? Amazingly, this was never addressed in this entire thread! :-)
thank you,
Iperson will present box of ipad and check from store will they unlock it?
If you have the original proof of purchase from an authorized source, yes. If you bought it from a gray market reseller, pawn shop, etc. no.
