Design fault? 27" 2013 iMac stand just gave up!

Hi all,

I was just sitting watching TV when there was a loud crack and my iMac screen suddenly tilted down - now the screen will not stay where it is tilted / positioned. I was not using the mac at the time and it was not doing anything it just broke on its own. The mac was only bought in February and has not been moved or tilted once it was in place. This looks like a major design flaw to me as a 10 month mac just fails on its own! Has anyone else suffered this malfunction?

I have yet to contact apple as the store will be closed now but am interested to know if anyone else has suffered the same problem and what apples response was?

I will keep you guys posted once I have spoken to Apple

Hi guys - as promised here is an update.

I have just got back from my genius appointment and they have taken my mac in for repair, I should have it back in about 5 days to a week. They said that they had not seen this before and had trouble locating parts or really just the spring assembly that does not seem to be a separate unit and because of this they have had to order me a complete replacement back unit (the whole rear assembly) and a new stand (foot) this little lot comes to about £600 so not a cheap repair. Lucky for me as the unit is not a year old so was covered by the original warranty but I also have 3 years apple care that will start when the warranty expires.

The apple guy did say that he had to run this passed his manager to ensure that there would not be any charges to be met by myself,I don't think that I can repeat here my answer to him which was interspersed with key items from consumer law lol.

Anyway I will give you an update when I get the mac back to let you know if they have repaired it to my satisfaction (yes I am one of those nightmare customers lol)

Many thanks for your help and suggestions guys :-)

Hey bro. I bought mine in 2013 too with 3-year AppleCare that ended Nov 30,2016 and in the following week I was typing on the keyboard and suddenly "crack" and "snap" the screen started to move toward the desk. It was 2 days out of warranty. AppleCare booked me into a store and repaired the hinge. In th end I paid about $160 or so to fix it! To me it is a design fault because the 27" screen is very very very heavy and the iMac has been moved only twice in the last three years. Oh, well if I were younger I would have argued until they would do it for free. :-(

I have never heard of this happening so I know it's not a design flaw, I suspect there was a manufacturing error on your specific machine. I'm sure Apple will fix it under warranty. If you are covered by AppleCare I'd give them a call today, if not it's not too late to get AppleCare. This will extend the warranty to 3 years and provide you with 3 years of telephone support too. I'd STRONGLY suggest getting it.

Same thing just happend to my 27" mac (purchased new almost exactly a year ago, in March 2013).

I heard a very loud sound coming from the computer while streaming a tv show last night. It sounded like something heavy hit it. All I saw was the screen slightly shaking, as if someone just moved the computer desk. Couldn't figure out where the sound came from until I sat behind it the next day and tried tilting the screen up. It just fell back to it's lowest position.

I called Apple Care immidiately and got the same answer - the technitian never heard of this problem before - happy to find this thead to help establish that I'm not alone in this problem!

From the sound of it, this issue is starting to happen to more and more people! Taking it in to the genius bar tomorrow.

My fix costs virtually nothing, it takes 30 mins or so to find something to use to do it and hardly any time to fix it. Use super strength double sided tape on the back of the iMac and let it rest on the stand. Rock solid!

"After reading all of the woes and how it needs to go away for repair, be prised apart and sometimes comes back mis-aligned I thought I would make a fix of my own. It took me two goes while I understood the forces acting on the stand and iMac due to the angles, but when I figured out what to do it took me around 20 minutes.

If you look at the back you will see the cooling slots that you do not want to cover, and the RAM cover which is weaker than the rest of the back. I looked aroung my garage and found a couple of bits from some bathroom fittings and a bumper fom the front of a metal desk. I pushed the metal bathroom fixing inside the hollow end of the desk bumper and placed it on the metal below the cooling grid, then when the weight of the iMac tries to push itself down to the bottom my improvised bumper stops it at the perfect angle for me. I applied double sided tape to the part touching the iMac to keep it from moving and it is now working as a correct height bumper, invisible unless you look for it.

Now, if my iMac develops a real problem that needs internal work I can get the stand fixed at the same time, if not (hopefully) I will live with it as it is. I can't tell any difference now. You will also be able to do this, maybe with a rubber door stop and something stuck onto the back below the grille, trial and error until you get the right angle. It's so much better than sending it away to be prised apart!

Hi, the exact same thing happened to me on Saterday, I took the Mac in for repairs on Monday. I was told that I will be reponsible for possible costs and it will take 5 to 7 work days. It is obvious that this is due to a design issue, why don’t Apple own up and admit there is a problem and fix it. My Mac was bought and handed back to Menlyn iStore South-Africa.

My imac is out of warranty, and don't have apple care.

I went to apple store. They didn't admit this is the product defect. But I can pay around $70+tax to fix it.

Finally, I cancel the order, because I don't have confidence about the new part. It may be broken again.

My imac is late 2012. I saw others late 2013 imac has the same problem. http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1709835

Not happy.

Man, I am in serious envy of all of you who can actually "take a trip to the Apple store". I'm just here registering that the spring broke in our late 2012 iMac 27". We're kind of screwed. It's our production computer, and the closest Genius Bar is about 400 miles away. Until we get a replacement computer, we're not able to send it in, so it's just the way it is. Here's a pro tip: take a stack of phone books and pile them under your iMac until it reaches optimal height in it's forward-tilting position.

A stack of phone books seems like a lot of overkill and desk crowding. Yes, I can take mine in to the Apple Store, but I've got deadlines and can't stop working long enough to wait for my iMac to be returned to me. So, in the meantime... a simple PENCIL does the job of holding my screen up nicely. Just wedge it between the curved part of the stand and the back of the screen (where the RAM goes in)... and it holds the screen in place. A shorter pencil holds it lower and a longer pencil holds it higher. A pen, a dowel, a chopstick... all work. This will suffice until I can clear 3-5 days to take it in for repair.
