Design fault? 27" 2013 iMac stand just gave up!

Hi all,

I was just sitting watching TV when there was a loud crack and my iMac screen suddenly tilted down - now the screen will not stay where it is tilted / positioned. I was not using the mac at the time and it was not doing anything it just broke on its own. The mac was only bought in February and has not been moved or tilted once it was in place. This looks like a major design flaw to me as a 10 month mac just fails on its own! Has anyone else suffered this malfunction?

I have yet to contact apple as the store will be closed now but am interested to know if anyone else has suffered the same problem and what apples response was?

I will keep you guys posted once I have spoken to Apple

One more to the list.

I bought on October/13 and the freaking noise almost killed me (was on 4am that happened).

Good to know that i'm not alone, but i guess i'm screwed. I live in Brazil, don't have apple care but when i arrive in brazil, i payed the taxes, so i don't know if apple should fix this for free...

****, this imac is so expensive, shouldn't do that.

Add me to the list. I'd just gotten my iMac back from having to have the power supply replaced and was plugging it in...when SNAP!!!!!, and the screen drooped. Took it back to the store, and luckily the tech knew/found the issue and said it had been a problem with the 27" iMacs. I've got the screen currently propped up using the box for one of my guitar pedals, and am waiting for the store to call when the part comes in, a couple days from now. Ugh....computer bought in Jan of this year, and it was 11 months old.

My iMac was out of warranty. I called Apple, explained the issue and they extended my warranty.

I Called the Apple Store, explained the problem, was told to bring it in to show a Genius. I said no need, please order the part and repair it on the day for me so that I don't have to leave my computer in the city for three weeks until the next time I'm there. They said no.

Then I called the nearest licensed repair shop (4 hours drive away) they got the part in the day before I arrived, did the repair on the day, and I returned home, job done.

Unfortunately, the replacement part is identical to the original faulty part and is a small piece of plastic that holds the spring in place. Very flimsy. I shall not be surprised if (when) the same fault occurs again.

Just a slightly OT aside:

I've noticed that when we have "good stuff" and it fails we instantly assume that it's "bad design" instead of just Murphy's Law.

The Android-geeks are particularly bad at presenting as an example why "iPhone *****" that "I had a friend and he had this problem, that's how I know [ALL] iPhones are total garbage."

When I point out to them that one data point isn't a trend. and give as a counter-example the NUMEROUS complaints about the horrible design of Samsung's Micro-USB recharger port the response is invariably "yeah, but I didn't pay $500+ for my phone..."

It's logical in a way, but only in a limited way. If "you get what you pay for," then Apple owners have the right to expect near-perfection.

But when I ask "so was it resolved" they mumble and change the subject because the answer is "well, yeah..."

HI Tipu,

yes got it fixed from ABM care, it wasn't a smooth experience dealing with them though.

My iMac was under warranty, but the technician claimed no mechanical parts covered under standard warranty. However they acknowledge the issue and he has to put in a request to Apple to cover this 'mechanism' issue under warranty. Eventually after 15days they got it fixed free of cost.

Be prepared to leave your iMac there for 2 weeks (may be more now due to holidays). Also ABM care answers 1 in 5 calls only, unfortunately we don't have much options.

My imac is out of warranty, and don't have apple care.

I went to apple store. They didn't admit this is the product defect. But I can pay around $70+tax to fix it.

Finally, I cancel the order, because I don't have confidence about the new part. It may be broken again.

My imac is late 2012. I saw others late 2013 imac has the same problem. http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1709835

Not happy.

I purchased my Imac 27" on 31/05/2014 and today my screen flopped forward and could not be tilted in any other position. I rang the seller and they told me to take it back for a replacement, but it does mean that I have to take all my folders and files off and start again, something I was not expecting so soon after purchase.

I think Apple should put in a recall for all these Imac 27" computers as this is obviously a design fault to have these flimsy plastic washers holding such a heavy screen, as I think the problem would re-occur time after time.

I thought Apple Imacs were good quality because of their price, but I was mistaken.

Currently a plastic cup is holding up my screen to get it to eye level.

To add to the conversation, and in response to all those Genius technicians who have 'never heard of this before', the same has happened to my 2012 27" iMac. It's about 22 months old.

I was quietly working away, and without warning, or any other movement in the vicinity, I heard a loud 'crack', and the screen limply tilted forward. From that point on the screen tilt could not be adjusted to preference... it always fell back to its maximum forward tilt.

If this happens to you, please use this post to prove to Apple technicians that yours is not an isolated incident, and that the problem is most definitely a product deficiency, not caused by a user's negligence.
