Design fault? 27" 2013 iMac stand just gave up!

Hi all,

I was just sitting watching TV when there was a loud crack and my iMac screen suddenly tilted down - now the screen will not stay where it is tilted / positioned. I was not using the mac at the time and it was not doing anything it just broke on its own. The mac was only bought in February and has not been moved or tilted once it was in place. This looks like a major design flaw to me as a 10 month mac just fails on its own! Has anyone else suffered this malfunction?

I have yet to contact apple as the store will be closed now but am interested to know if anyone else has suffered the same problem and what apples response was?

I will keep you guys posted once I have spoken to Apple

Hi guys - as promised here is an update.

I have just got back from my genius appointment and they have taken my mac in for repair, I should have it back in about 5 days to a week. They said that they had not seen this before and had trouble locating parts or really just the spring assembly that does not seem to be a separate unit and because of this they have had to order me a complete replacement back unit (the whole rear assembly) and a new stand (foot) this little lot comes to about £600 so not a cheap repair. Lucky for me as the unit is not a year old so was covered by the original warranty but I also have 3 years apple care that will start when the warranty expires.

The apple guy did say that he had to run this passed his manager to ensure that there would not be any charges to be met by myself,I don't think that I can repeat here my answer to him which was interspersed with key items from consumer law lol.

Anyway I will give you an update when I get the mac back to let you know if they have repaired it to my satisfaction (yes I am one of those nightmare customers lol)

Many thanks for your help and suggestions guys :-)

It's not a design fault, it's a parts failure, isolated to a few iMacs. There is a thread here somewhere with pics of the small part that fails.

The number of failures reported here is hardly insubstantial. In my case, I put in on my desk in early 2013 and rarely touch it. The part spontaneously failed under the weight of the screen, despite me not even using the hinge for day-to-day adjustment. Use of a part that can't even tolerate the earth's gravitational field I do think would constitute a design flaw.

My Late 2013 iMac is suffering too from this malady. The "crack" sound scared the bejeebers out of me and the face of the iMac is nowtilting down.

I have scheduled a meeting at the Genius Bar in Leawood, KS this coming week to have them look at the problem. I'm very hopeful that this will be fixed gratis as it is obviously a design/part selection flaw. Part of designing a product is not just its engineering but providing specifications for and selection of the parts which will be utilized to build the system..so from my point of view, its a design flaw.

Same problem. Late 2013 iMac stand gave out today. It's no longer under warranty and not covered by Applecare, so I've jammed it at an acceptable angle. I thought Apple was a quality-based company especially considering the price you pay for their products. I'm not too pleased to find so many people with the same issue. This must be a design fault and as such Apple should stand up, accept responsibility and repair for free.

Oh quit your whining and being a poor victim, take the machine in to an Apple Store and ask for the repair then just get on with it!

This happened to me twice!!

I can't believe it, we bought two 27" iMac in Feb 2015 together, one the hinge broke 2 months before the warrant is over and the second one few months after the warranty, apple care said there will be a charge since it's out of factory warranty. What's going on? This thing is expensive, why can they be better quality? People who fixed this issue for free, would you please tell us how you done it? I been on the phone with apple care for hrs already. This is what I used to keep my monitor up, but it's sad since it's only a little bit over a year and it's a beautiful designed....too bad everyone have to think of a way to keep it up. Shame on you APPLE!!!

Had the same issue this morning, really scared me. I thought something exploded. Found a temp solution, I squeezed my old credit card in the slot on the bottom portion, I can even play with the angle. I do not like the idea to leave my work iMac for one week to fix the small issue. I read so many responses and that is obvious a recall, and should have been taking care in a day or two.

What bugs me out about Apple is it's not a third party part replying on external suppliers as they do for drives and graphic cards, the hinge is a Apple product.

Over the last three years of them failing they have not replaced the faulty part, just offer replacing it with the crappy stock.

Unless they can prove they have completely re-made a new part and can promise it won't brake, I will not be recommending any of my client

or family for that matter of buying any iMac.

Same same. 2011 27" iMac. snap then droop.

Quickest solution is two champagne or wine corks with one end cut at a slight angle. place them between stand and monitor back one on either side just above the round hold in back of stand. move up or down to adjust tilt. the fake corks may not have enough friction.

A slightly more permanent but removable solution would involve a drop of hot glue on each end. But I'm too busy for that right now.

Soaking of corks not required.

With due respect, 2011 iMacs were not affected. I think you should look up to see which year iMac you have.

This is my news after posting few pages ago about the same problem happening again, this time out o warranty so they wanted to charge me 485,00€ (euro)!! Incredible!

well I googled out for shopping the hinge, bought it for 30€ and I fixed it by myself! Up to those losers who don't admit their own fault! Allowing thausends of people to freely criticize such a great brand that Steve Jobs worked 'till death to creat!

I Have written several mails to be contacted and nothing ever happened. I've been an Apple supporter for at least 10 years and being dumped like this was very bad of them. from my little spot what I could do at the moment was not to by the new iPhone SE, which may sound stupid and mean less, but it's a drop and Oceans are made of drops.

thank you

I recently dropped by my local Apple store and asked a staff member about the issue. I was told that "they had never heard of that happening before", and that I should bring my iMac in for repair.

That's because it is a fairly unusual occurrence. The trouble with forums like these is that to the uneducated eye it seems like a common occurrence. However considering this forum is more like a hospital, a more correct analogy would be visiting a hospital to try to gauge the overall health of a population. Obviously that doesn't work.

How did an aftermarket repair do? Biggest worry i’d, have is if they damage the display, who’s responsible based on the repair contract? If it’s at an Apple store and they break it... could have a better outcome.

I took mine to the Lincoln Park Chicago Apple store Summer 2017 and they had it done in a few days.

Tip: take it in your original box but they won’t hold the box for you. Then take back your original empty box to take it back home.
