Design fault? 27" 2013 iMac stand just gave up!

Hi all,

I was just sitting watching TV when there was a loud crack and my iMac screen suddenly tilted down - now the screen will not stay where it is tilted / positioned. I was not using the mac at the time and it was not doing anything it just broke on its own. The mac was only bought in February and has not been moved or tilted once it was in place. This looks like a major design flaw to me as a 10 month mac just fails on its own! Has anyone else suffered this malfunction?

I have yet to contact apple as the store will be closed now but am interested to know if anyone else has suffered the same problem and what apples response was?

I will keep you guys posted once I have spoken to Apple

Hi guys - as promised here is an update.

I have just got back from my genius appointment and they have taken my mac in for repair, I should have it back in about 5 days to a week. They said that they had not seen this before and had trouble locating parts or really just the spring assembly that does not seem to be a separate unit and because of this they have had to order me a complete replacement back unit (the whole rear assembly) and a new stand (foot) this little lot comes to about £600 so not a cheap repair. Lucky for me as the unit is not a year old so was covered by the original warranty but I also have 3 years apple care that will start when the warranty expires.

The apple guy did say that he had to run this passed his manager to ensure that there would not be any charges to be met by myself,I don't think that I can repeat here my answer to him which was interspersed with key items from consumer law lol.

Anyway I will give you an update when I get the mac back to let you know if they have repaired it to my satisfaction (yes I am one of those nightmare customers lol)

Many thanks for your help and suggestions guys :-)

Let's add my iMac to the list. Bought a year and half ago, crack! and droop last night while I was in the room but not using it. I have a roll of duct tape wedged in between the back of the screen and the stand to hold it up. If I found out it will be insanely costly or they will have my computer forever, this may have to be my 'permanent' solution. If you think about it, that screen is terribly front-heavy and it is predictable that something like this would/could happen. I have had one Apple or another for 20+ years and I am honestly not surprised. They used to build a much sturdier product in the old days,

I'm a member of this growing club as well. Bought my 27" iMac in summer 2013 and one day in march 2014, *crack* - and my screen hangs limply down.

As a temporary fix, I've propped an old 6" ruler between the curve of the base and the little rubber collar of the power cable, and this is presenting the screen at a comfortable angle for work. It's of course not ideal, as I can no longer adjust the screen for various lighting conditions.

The real question for me now is when I can afford to be without my computer for the week it would take to get repaired. This is a classic 'threshold' question -- so long as the annoyance owing to the decreased functionality of the screen stand is less than the hassle involved in hauling it off to the Apple Store (risking further damage by dropping, banging) and the loss of use for a week, it's not going to get fixed. But I need to get it done at some point if only to preserve the resale value of the machine.

Rats.

Are you sure?

I thought the 90 day thing was for phone support under AppleCare.

Per Apple website.

Every Mac, iPod, iPhone, iPad, and display comes with complimentary telephone technical support for 90 days after your purchase and a one-year limited warranty. The AppleCare Protection Plan and AppleCare+ extend your service coverage and give you one-stop service and support from Apple experts.

Here's the AppleCare warranty link write-up for the iMac.

Note the Graph in the left hand column and note the Important note at the very end of the write-up in the bottom right hand column.

Copied from the above link.

Important Note

The AppleCare Protection Plan can be purchased only while your Mac is still covered under the standard one-year limited warranty. SeeAppleCare Protection Plan Terms and Conditions for complete product details.

You have a full year limited warranty on an Apple Mac WITHOUT having to sign up for AppleCare in 90 days.

WRT 90 day telephone support, the warranty states this, which in my mind is telephone support:

HOW TO OBTAIN WARRANTY SERVICE?

Please access and review the online help resources described below before seeking warranty service. If the Apple Product is still not functioning properly after making use of these resources, please contact an Apple representative or, if applicable, an Apple owned retail store ("Apple Retail") or AASP, using the information provided below. An Apple representative or AASP will help determine whether your Apple Product requires service and, if it does, will inform you how Apple will provide it. When contacting Apple via telephone, other charges may apply depending on your location.

I just got the same problem yesterday. I was not touching or moving the screen when a loud crack came from it. The screen bend and stay in that position. My computer has 1 year and a half since I buy it. I was stupid and forgot to renew the apple care so probably if I got it fixed will cost me a fortune.

Its a shame for a computer that cost a high amount of money to brake it self like this. Apple is a very expensive computer this type of problem should be avoid with better inspection.

Im really sad because its the first time I had any problem with a Mac. As I can see here, is not an isolated problem.

Im waiting now to check how much is gonna cost and how long to repair this faulty stand

😕😟😮

Another one bites the dust: When returning from holidays I found my 27" iMac tilted down. It was bought on Dec'13. Still under Apple warranty. I made an appointment to the nearest Apple store. Just for the spanish people I will include the keywords so they can find this thread:

pedestal iMac 27 pulgadas no se mantiene en vertical, muelle de la pantalla no funciona, pantalla inclinada.

I will be back with updates.

Regards.
