Design fault? 27" 2013 iMac stand just gave up!

Hi all,

I was just sitting watching TV when there was a loud crack and my iMac screen suddenly tilted down - now the screen will not stay where it is tilted / positioned. I was not using the mac at the time and it was not doing anything it just broke on its own. The mac was only bought in February and has not been moved or tilted once it was in place. This looks like a major design flaw to me as a 10 month mac just fails on its own! Has anyone else suffered this malfunction?

I have yet to contact apple as the store will be closed now but am interested to know if anyone else has suffered the same problem and what apples response was?

I will keep you guys posted once I have spoken to Apple

Hi guys - as promised here is an update.

I have just got back from my genius appointment and they have taken my mac in for repair, I should have it back in about 5 days to a week. They said that they had not seen this before and had trouble locating parts or really just the spring assembly that does not seem to be a separate unit and because of this they have had to order me a complete replacement back unit (the whole rear assembly) and a new stand (foot) this little lot comes to about £600 so not a cheap repair. Lucky for me as the unit is not a year old so was covered by the original warranty but I also have 3 years apple care that will start when the warranty expires.

The apple guy did say that he had to run this passed his manager to ensure that there would not be any charges to be met by myself,I don't think that I can repeat here my answer to him which was interspersed with key items from consumer law lol.

Anyway I will give you an update when I get the mac back to let you know if they have repaired it to my satisfaction (yes I am one of those nightmare customers lol)

Many thanks for your help and suggestions guys :-)

My imac has this exactly same problem tonight. When I was sitting in front of it, a loud crack noise "PA', the screen tilts forward, and can't hold its position.

Can't believe this.

My imac 27" (top-line) was bought January 2013, today is September 12, 2014, the screen hinge last 1 year and 8 months.

I have no Apple Care. BAD !. I thought it should be ok in 3 years because it is imac made by Apple.

Crikey!

Just happened to me this morning, too! My 27" just issued a loud snap and the screen tilted forward. Stays there, will use some books or something in the interim to keep at a proper viewing angle.

Also 10 months old - what's with the 10 months with everybody?

I guess I'll have to take it into the Apple Store (where I got it from) but bloody **** is that a pain in the neck. I was **always** suspicious of the screen and the tilting - and you know what? I was right! Wish I wasn't, though .... : ((( Not cool, Apple - not cool at all.

Just now I was plugging something in, gently, and *SNAP! Down tilted the monitor of our July 2013 purchased 27" iMac. Since it is Jan 2015 it is definitely no longer in warranty, and per a defective keyboard inquiry recently at the Apple store. I'm afraid what was once a sleek design aesthetic has now faltered to a box wedged in between the stand and the monitor.

Total FAIL Apple.

This happened to me about an hour ago, unfortunately it's a holiday today, I've made an appointment with my local store but they can't see me until Wednesday next week. I tried calling Customer Care but they are closed today.

Is this something I need to do every 6 months or so? I am really disappointed with Apple over this, I paid a bundle for this late 2013 iMac and I have not even had it a full year. Of course I Have AppleCare but I am really ****** that this is because of a Plastic Washer! I am seriously considering a different machine the next time I 'm looking for a new computer. I put up with my previous iMac and it's highly reflective screen for 3 years until I could finally afford to upgrade to this new iMac, now I discover that it's got a vital flaw and it is almost a joke now with various posts showing how they are coping with the problem by propping it up with pens, tubes and other things. Not that I don't appreciate the pictures. I'm using a plastic square coaster that I hope stays in place, it's still not that great and I expect it to fall out anytime. But it is just sad that a Machine this Expensive has such a Flaw.

now I'm stepping down from my Soapbox, I hope I didn't ruin anybody else's good Friday.

Australia's consumer laws aren't quite so cut-and-dried, it depends on price paid compared to similar items in the market (a $5000 TV would be expected to last longer than a similarly specced $500 TV), previous experience with similar appliances (a modern fridge shouldn't have major malfunctions within a decade, just like in the olden days). If I can quote The Castle (as any good Aussie knows), it's about the vibe. 🙂

Ask Apple to see if they can get a part in for you before you take it in for repair.

Well all I can say is how reassuring it is that I am not the only one that has heard that dreaded Crack sound and the screen dropping! This does appear to be a design flaw as all the posts I have read on this issue seem to have 27" iMacs. iMac is just over 1 year old - have applecare though. Was not even moving the iMac, just crack and that was that. Disappointed Apple 😟.

I ama few months out of warranty at this point.

For everybody in the US in the same boat:

Call Apple Customer Relations - 1-800-275-2273. Ask politely & firmly that you want to be transferred to Customer Relations. Tell them exactly what you stated in your post. See what CR can do for you.

Sorry, I do not know how CR works outside of the US or if there is such a department.

GOOD LUCK!

It is one month out of warranty. Do you mean that there is a warranty on this part, even if it's out of warranty? I'm going to take it in anyway and see what they will do.

When you take it to an Apple Store ask for the part to be replaced, Apple does not have an official policy however if you look at this thread you will find many customers that have had out of warranty machines covered. Using good manners is always helpful.

I guess I am joinng the club. Was in my bedroom when a mysterious "pop" or "crack" was heard. Went to investigate; thought it was the heater or something. Then I glanced over at my beautiful iMAC 27" and noticed it facing downward. Almost cancelled my trip to 'Vivid" (if you're in Sydney, AUS you know what this is) Happened on 23rd of May, purchased at HN on 16th May 2015. Currently being propped up by two external hard drives. Thanks for all of the advice and it feels better; I guess knowing others are having this issue and not just my odd luck. I was considering purchasing the Apple Watch and a MAC Book, but may hold off for now. I am an old PC user and had vowed to switch and stick with MAC computers after my last pc failed. Currently have an IPAD and IPhone 6 plus, love them and have had no issues. Hope the resolution of the tilting screen can be resolved without drama as I am about a week out of warranty.

Poor me, it just happened to me....it is weird.....

Happy, i know I'm not alone, but I'm kinda worrying if they will fix it for me cuz I'm out of warranty. (i read another post said it charged 600 pounds!!)

BTW, my iMac has been fixed last year due to the display distortion(really serious, whole monitor image was distorted and become green ONLY, yes, like in early 80's green color monitor) Luckily, i got fixed twice eventually get rid of this problem.

Im disappointed with the product quality(hardware), but I'm generally happy with the service and software........
