Design fault? 27" 2013 iMac stand just gave up!

So this happened to me as well. Interesting, I was in my office, not working on the computer and hear this deafening crack but had no idea what it was. I checked the windows to see if one cracked somehow, but couldn't figure out what it was. Well today, I go to use my iMac and the screen will no longer hold. I found this post and realized the crack was the stand breaking. What a huge pain and seems that there is an engineering or manufacturing defect given that it is not an isolated incident. Wondering if the screen is too heavy to be supported by the stand hardware they designed it with.

Crack... and there goes another one! Have found that an old audio cassette tape wedged in the back of the screen is about the 'right angle'.

The thing is, I bought my iMac second had from the company I work for. Consequently I won't have any Apple Care warranty 😟

Will Apple now fix ANY iMac with this issue, regardless of AppleCare?

I'm certainly not paying hundreds of pounds to fix something that can be fixed with a plastic cassette tape (or a golf ball)!!

Any answers gratefully received!

To the person who said "I've never heard of it so I know it's not a design flaw" - sorry but that logic does not hold, unless you work for Apple and it's your job to know of all such issues. You cannot possibly know *everything*. Still, it probably isn't a design flaw, just a fluke.

This happened to me, too, in late Sep/ early Oct (can't remember exactly) but unfortunately about a year after it was purchased (late Sep/ early Oct 2013), and I couldn't afford Apple Care this one time (my wife and I have close to a dozen Apple computers, tablets and phones and have Apple Care on most). I also need this computer every day (7 days a week), so I can't even take it in, even if I could afford to pay for what will probably be an expensive fix. For now, I've had to prop the screen up with some notebooks and strong metallic boxes. Not very flexible, but better than trying to look at a downward-tilting screen.

11/25/2014 It just happened yesterday, almost 1 year old iMac 27" .still under warranty but I'm sure I'll buy an extended warranty... Just add me to this list. I played with a game last night and suddenly a big crack noise and the screen fall down!!! Almost **** in my pants! Next week Monday I have an appointment I hope this is not take too much time to fix it...

One more to the list.

I bought on October/13 and the freaking noise almost killed me (was on 4am that happened).

Good to know that i'm not alone, but i guess i'm screwed. I live in Brazil, don't have apple care but when i arrive in brazil, i payed the taxes, so i don't know if apple should fix this for free...

Count me in 😟 Just today at around 3pm local time... it wasn't being used, then a loud snap in the room!!! My husband rushed to the room and found the monitor tilting forward he had to put a pillow on the table just to make sure that it won't break in case it bends more forward 😟😟😟

I'm in the same boat with the rest of you who have this problem. bootsasisyap, Apple with probably repair yours under warranty. Mine is out of warranty. If you, or anyone else finds out how much the repair will cost, please let me know. As a temporary fix, I have a eye glass case wedged behind the monitor to return it to eye level.

What I believe is that paying to have my imac repaired is completely insane,inappropriate, and dishonest. It is clearly a design problem, and as a client, who trusted in the brands name and as a client who payed almost 3 times more hoping to have a better product, I believe we should not pay for absolutely nothing, not even a cent. APPLE should resolve the problem with or without apple care, it's their mistake, otherwise it is consider to be disrespectful with all the people who wrote on all of these 14 pages, and who knows how many more. At least I'd like to receive an answer or an apology from them, as a minimum expression of understanding they know something went wrong, but all I here is your warranty expired, pay more than you have already have.

I have AppleCare and in Australia (not sure about anyone else) you can ask them to service it in your home if you live within a 50km radius of the GPO. Regardless, I feel very confident that Apple would not let a purchaser of their flagship iMac just swing in the breeze.

Add me too. Woke up to find my iMac hanging its head. This is a design failure and needs to be fixed for free. I will see if I can get it done for nothing as some have or else resort to my "toolmaker" fixture.

Yes you're right about consumer laws not being so cut and dried. But after paying about $3500 for a maxed-out iMac, I would expect it to last for at least 3 years without problems. Yes "the vibe" is where it's all at!

I like the idea of asking them to get the part in first before taking it in for repair.

The replacement part is hardly significant. The design of the 2012 iMac is such that the labor cost is orders of magnitude greater than the part. No one wants to open the machine for this purpose, but the cheapest offer I got was $600.

Happened to my 27" iMac yesterday. Wasn't even near it and I heard a crack and the monitor dropped. iMac is just over a year old. Thankls to all for the encouraging posts. Nice to know this was not an isolated issue.

This happened to me overnight. was fine last night and cam down this morning and it was tilted forward. i actually checked the history to make sure i was the last one to use it and i was so it just failed on its own in the middle of the night. will be interested in hearing how it goes with Apple.

Unfortunately I too happened to me with imac 27 "bought 14 months ago, next week I have an appointment and out of warranty, and see what happens. So I remain meantime, buy a iDuck.😢 I will keep you informed....
