How to set up outlook.com email account on Mac Mail?

Having trouble setting up my outlook.com email as an IMAP account in Mac Mail for OS X Mavericks. Have tried the solutions on google, but could use some help pls. Have been able to get it to work for in-coming mail, but not for out-going mail. Keep getting "rejected by server" error. Tried using these instructions: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook_com/forum/oemail-osend/how-to-set-up- mac-mail-to-sync-your-outlookcom/afdfe981-20c7-4d4a-b6b1-9329b27f018a

Am starting by selecting Mail > Add Account, then selecting "Add other Mail Account". The right way to start?

Next, am entering dummy email address and dummy password per the instructions in the above link. After I click Create, i get the "Account must be manually configured" messsage as shown below.

On the next screen, I select IMAP and putimap-mail.outlook.comas the mail server, and I put in my real outlook.com email address and real password.

On the next screen, i put smtp-mail.outlook.com as the out-going server. I also put in my real email address and real password (I have tried it leaving these two fields blank, but that hasn't worked either). I then click create, and the new account is created with no error messages.

With this set up I can send emails to my real-email@outlook.com address and they appear as expected in Mac Mail. But if I try to send an email within Mac Mail from real-email@outlook.com, I get this error:

Maybe I am setting up the account incorrectly, or maybe there is something addtional I need to do in order to authenticate the account in Mac Mail or in Outlook.com. Not sure, and running out of ideas. Help appreciated. Thx

You need to edit your smtp server list and allocate them to your outlook account.

imap-mail.outlook.com

port: 993, ssl

smtp-mail.outlook.com

port: 587, ssl

Choose in the Settings your outlook account and under the Accountinformation choose or edit below the smtp server.

Sorry for not being clear, I have it working 95%. I can send mail from the mail app, and my current inbox is already showing. However, I don't get any new emails. I can get them in browser or on my iphone they just don't show up in my mail app. but I can send emails just find from the mail app. I followed the guide in this thread.

If you configured your outlook account using system preferences instead of Mail preferences, you shouldn't have this problem. The same thing happens with gmail accounts, but gmail accounts never work well on apple mail, whilst outlook accounts do.

Regarding the Trash problem, when i first passed from windows to apple i realised that no matter how much stuff i deleted from my storage the mac continued telling me that my memory was full. Of course i quickly realised that it only considers stuff erased once you empty the trash. Same thing for Mail.

Hey guys,

I have the same issue as the OP, however after all I still cannot fix it. Could you help with it as I'm still unable to sent any e-mail from my Mail app?

So basically I have the same issue with the smtp server.

The port is correct, just as the server name and yet I still cannot send anything.

Could you help? I can provide more screenshots if needed.

Thanks

did you try configurating your outlook account using system preferences instead of mail preferences? that worked for me. it will though, take a very long time for the emails to appear at the begining, and they also take longer to arrive than if you use other tools or another email. you just have to be patient...

Did you configurate your account from the begining through system preferences? in the sense that, when you didn't have the account on mac, you started it with Mail or with system preferences? if you didnt i would tell you to try deleting the account completely from the computer and start over, using internet accounts on system preferences only, from the begining to the end. then, after everything is set up again, turn on Mail and try it out.

Here is what I discovered and I sincerely hope this solution helps others avoid wasting time on issue.

It order to access Outlook.com with ANY app, such as Mac Outlook 2011 or Windows Outlook 2013, you need to bypass the two-step verification method that the Outlook.com web site uses. Go to the following Microsoft Help page and it explains the steps to generate an app password.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/app-passwords-two-step-verification

Basically, after signing on to my Microsoft account at https://login.live.com/login I went to the "Security & Privacy" tab. When you scroll down, you will find the option to generate a new app password.

After I generated a new app password, I opened Outlook 2011 and followed the typical steps to add a new email account. For the Outlook.com password, I copied and pasted the new app password that I generated moments earlier at my Microsoft account site. Less than five seconds later, Outlook 2011 synced up and my Outlook.com account finally had a green light.

A few minutes later, I opened Outlook 2013 on my Parallels Windows 7 virtual machine and used the same new app password to configure my Outlook.com account in Microsoft Outlook 2013. Again, it synced up in seconds.

I hope this information helps!

This is an ongoing problem and does not appear to be resolved by Apple and Microsoft leaving their CUSTOMERS to suffer.

The ability to send emails settings via Mac Outlook referencing my hotmail account repeatedly falls over resulting in my having to spend hours backtracking

and resetting parameters that for no apparent reason stops working.

Over the past few years I have revisited this problem again and again and again with no stable solution being provided.

Why is this not resolved with a stable solution?

Is there not an Ombudsman body be set up in order that such FUNDAMENTAL ISSUES can be directed to?

Further, that EU, US, Chinese authorities et al set in place LARGE PENALTIES on the software providers for failing to resolve what, from where I sit, appear to be system incompatibility problems. eg Apple OS incompatible with Windows OS etc

In the case of COMMUNICATIONS it is inconceivable that modern(?) software providers hanker basic requirements such as the sending of emails by their customers due to their systems failure. Not only is this a waste of the consumers time but also a hinderance to commerce.

I Had it working at the beginning, but I felt there wasn't something right, it was too easy, then I discovered that whenever I send an email from my Mac, it's sense twice!! And then... I could never consult my contacts from Outlook in the contacts app so I think all this was because I didn't select the Exchange option in the Accounts configuration, I choose "Other Accounts" And well I guess this option had my e-mail kind of running but not couldn't sync my contacts, or calendars or anything else from Outlook. And I can't find a solution. If anyone know anything, please help!!! See the replies, we are lost!!!
