Lost Projects with Final Cut 10.1

Hi Like an idiot I updated final cut and chose update all for my events and projects. Some projects updated and some did not. I have one that I need to finish for a client. I saved all of my previous events and projects on my external drive, but when I go to update project and events by clicking locate them, bothe the previous projects and previous events folders are grayed out. The dialog box says this current selection is not valid. Choose another SAN location or folder.

How do I open this project in the new final cut 10.1?

Any info is greatly apreciated!

on my external drives, an 'old final cut projects and events' folder has been created alongside the new four square purple 'projects and events' logo.

On one drive, when i open fcp, my projects and events are all there. On another drive, my events are there but my proects are not. The funny thing is, they were there the other night (after 2 weeks when i updated)??!

Oké So far I haven't found a way to fix this either. I do work on a mac external formated drive as well. But no projects came in either. I have seen nothing sofar here that wil fix this.

How can I still work in the old version of finalcut Pro after the update? Can't find that anymore either. Is it hidden somewhere. Tired of trying to update. Going back will be just fine for me. All worked than.

At least I can work again with my projects again.

Supposed to make another cut of old projects in 10 days. Which now is impossible.

Help?

Hi guys,

I ran into this issue and couldn't resolve it.

But I found a solution!

My project files didn't show up on the hard-drive I had been working on for a few weeks. All of a sudden, they disappeared, simply by closing and re-opening FCPX 10.1

All I had to do was click on File > Open Library > Other > select the library name you were working on.

Moral of the story: back up your project files - EVERY DAY.

10 seconds of copying files can save you 10 days of work.

I have projects which I can no longer use cause they keep rendering even when rendering is turned off.

Have used them in the old version but since the update they are useless. Trying to relink has not done much.

New project do not seem to have this problem.

Still think that an update should not do that to my projects, back up or not!

When updating (File>Update Projects and Events) 10.1 is looking for folders named Final Cut Events and Final Cut Projects. It expects them to be located in Movies in the start-up drive and at the root level of other drives. Check in the Finder to see whether your old projects and events are in those folders and in those locations .

Well I have been using external harddrives formated in exfat for all my events and projects (have about 10TB of them) This has been working fine with fcpx 10.09 and earlier versions. So exfat has always worked fine so far.

(exuse spelling mistakes, english is´nt my native language)

I´m really frustrated over Apple that´s not able to launch a proper "plug and play" update.

For us hobby users that is´nt so deep into everything it is difficult when we meets problem like this. When I finally have time to sit down and make some videos, (to busy with work, kids, rehabilitat my house and so on) I want to doedit videos and not spend hour of hours and nights searching how to solve problems that technicians at Apple should have tought about (and tested out before launch

I have just importet to my exfat 2tb hdd totaly apx 15 hrs of conserts my son has played on a tour around europe (with 3 cameras) in addition 2 other consert projects (finished) was stored on this HDD (importet via my i-mac fcpx 10.09)

Last week I was going for a job seminar in the mountains and would have some sparetime in the evenings. Nice, then I could catch up with som editing, I tought 🙂

I borrowed my son´s MacBookPro which is updatet to Maverics and of course ended up with fcp 10.1 when downloading FCPX on this mac. Connec

Apperently a maximum letters her but firt time here 🙂

Connected my exfat HDD, FCP asked for updating Projects and events, I clicked on atomatic and there I am. Not able to open my events or project neither in version 10.1 on the macbook or 10.09 on the imac

I have 6 other HDD with events and prosject (all exfat) that I have to updated (guess the Imac has to bee updated to 10.1 sooner or later) The events and projects on my europa tour HDD can be reimported from my AVCHD backup HDD(had´nt started editing and the two other events/projects was finished)

So, guess I have to by a new HDD, Format it in mac OS extended and copy events and projects over to this one.

Can I do this via finder or should I do this in FCPX? (recalls that I´ve seen some Larry Jordan tutorials where he points out that all moving files around should be done in FCP and not use finder.

Do anyone know if Apple is working on a fix that will allow exfat hdd´s work as they worked at former versions, and mybe even let you keep the old structure on the earlier event/prosject and the new structure for new events/projects.

I guess I now have to backup all my former Events/projects before I try updating it in 10.1 version. That takes alot of time

I was told that Apple products was intuitive and easy, but when meeting problems like this..... I´m disappointed.

Apple should have spent a couple of month more testing before launch so customers doesn´t end up with problems like this. Updates should be "plug and play" !!!!!!

Hope someone can give me an answer on some of my questions.

Sincerely

ExFAT drives can be used with 10.1. They just cannot be used for an update. It is the nature of the way the old structure is in the directory and the way FCP uses hard links to update the media into the new library. It's unfortunate but unavoidable for updating.

Why were you using ExFAT drives with FCP in the first place? If you've watched Larry Jordan you know it has always be best practice to use OS X extended formatting.

Larry's remarks about doing things from inside FCP are probably not relevant to 10.1.

Thanks for quick reply Tom, I was probably thinking that it´s nice to be able to acess and write from both OS and Windows, but see now that the event/project hdd´s only is used for exactly that purpose and nothing else 🙂

I mybe should have followed Larry´s tutorials from A to Z but has a tendency to search for toturials when I´m stuck with a problem and since english is´t my native language it can be a little over my head now and then, but

I´m getting there.

Thank´s again for quick replay

Tom, you seem to be the man to speak to here. I also had this problem - updated to 10.1.1 from 10.0.8, I chose the update all option, all of my events appear, but not all of my projects!! Very, very frustrating that once again Apple puts out a product that does not work properly. Anyway, my first thought was just what you suggested above, I'll just keep workimg in the older version and figure this out over time, as they both should work. But... ALL of my events and projects have been cleared out of 10.0.8 - IT IS COMPLETELY EMPTY!! I did choose save old projects so luckily I can find the project file in question at User > Me > Movies > Macintosh HD Old Final Cut Final Cut Projects and Events > Final Cut Projects > The project in question. BUT, I can't figure out how to restore it. I can't move it into a new library and am at a complete loss. AMAZING to me that Apple is not publicly addressing this with a fix, as it is obviously a bug that is happening to lots of people. All of that aside, I would really appreciate any help you can offer, first and foremost to get up and running in 10.1.1 with my current project, or as a plan b, some suggestions on how to restore 10.0.8 with all of my old media. Thanks for your time and help.
