Lost Projects with Final Cut 10.1

Hi Like an idiot I updated final cut and chose update all for my events and projects. Some projects updated and some did not. I have one that I need to finish for a client. I saved all of my previous events and projects on my external drive, but when I go to update project and events by clicking locate them, bothe the previous projects and previous events folders are grayed out. The dialog box says this current selection is not valid. Choose another SAN location or folder.

How do I open this project in the new final cut 10.1?

Any info is greatly apreciated!

Thank you for the quick reply Tom!

Yes, I do have an UPDATED PROJECTS folder in my new 10.1 Library. The project in question, Hanna Loft video, shows up in the folder, but it is misplaced in some exercise files. See here: Updated Projects > Chapter One > Hanna Loft video. The thing is as you can see by this screen shot, there is NO info in the project file; it shows 00:00:00 for time.User uploaded file

Next: Here is a screen shot of the back up folder path:

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Is this a fodler structure for FCP project files you've been using? That's inside a Final Cut projects folder?

It looks like the Hannah loft video is empty and was never used. There is nothing in there except the project file, not even any thumbnails or peak data, which must be tehre if anything was put in the project. Are you sure you didn't open a clip in the timeline and edit in that?

Tom, I've been using the folder structure that FCP uses by default. I imported the media into FCP and then it placed it in these folders. I never even looked behind the hood - just worked and saved in FCP - until this problem.

To answer your second question, I had all of my media in EVENTS, per the old structure, then created a project file by bringing clips down to the timeline. The project was saved, as I quit out of it several times over many weeks and it was in my Projects Index, as it was called before. So yes I edited clips in the Timeline, which is what you're supposed to do. I put a whole move together, with music, transitions, etc. And it's gone.

I realize how it "looks", but all of that info (my work) was there in 10.0.8 but now, in 10.1, disappeared.

There is obvioulsy a major flaw with this 10.1 update. For example, how did the project file get moved to Chapter one of my exercise files?

Anyway, I'd be happy if I could get back to 10.0.8, but when I open that version from my HD now it is completely empty - of all events and projects. In an earlier response to another person you mentioned you sholud be able to run both. So why is that happening?

Thanks,

D

That's where FCP put them after it did the update. It can't leave them in the original location or if you do an update again you'll get the same files again.

The files must be in the correct location for the legacy application. The projects and events have to be in folders called Final Cut Projects and Final Cut Events either in the Movies folder or at the root level of a secondary drive.

There is nothing in the Hannah loft video. Unless you've moved folders out of that project folder, that project has never had video in it.

Well Tom, Final Cut 10.0.8 was working fine.

The project and events files were all in the default file structure.

I downloaded the update.

It asked me if I wanted to update my events and projects.

I said yes.

It asked me if I wanted to back up old events and projects.

I said yes.

Then it launched, and my files are screwed up.

I only did what the program prompted me to do.

So the problem is not me, that's FCP/Apple bull. Again.

Do you not acknowledge from your time hearing about this problem over and over, that something is terriblly wrong with this update?

Anyway, it doesn't look like you've got any solutions, or even any suggestions...

I apprecaite you taking the time to write, but just telling me they're not in the right location isn't much help.

That's the problem, the 10.1 update obviously moved things around.

Put the events and projects files back where they belong and run the update again. Don't do update all this time. Do update selected. either point to the Movies folder or the drive where the projects and events are correctly located.

I have done updates probably more than a hundred times. The only instances of problems that I can recall are if the drives were not Mac formatted or had project folder structures in the Projects folder. This could be overcome simply by moving the projects out of the embedded structure to the top level of the Final Cut Projects folder.

Hi Tom,

Thanks for your reply again and I appreciate these more details notes. However...

Because I was just allowing 10.0.8 to place files where it is programmed to, I don't know what these proper locations are you're speaking of. So I'm not sure how to put them "back where they belong". Btw, all my projects are on my internal drive, so I shouldn't have to point anything, right?

Would you mind attaching a screen shot or include specific instructions from the screenshots I sent you?

The first column in this image is in what folder? The backup folder? In this folder structure, these three folders

User uploaded file

are project folders. (Hannah loft video is an empty project.) They need to be in the Movies folder in a folder called Final Cut Projects. The event folders that hold the corresponding media for these projects need to be in the Movies folder in a folder called Final Cut Events.

I'm guessing that buried in Chapters 1-5/Chapter 1/1.4 there may be other projects. And there may be other projects inside Chapter 1-5/Chapter 2 and Chapter 3 and Chapter 4 and Chapter 5, and also inside Chapters 6-10 and so on. All these project folders need to be moved to Movies/Final Cut Projects and all the corresponding events need to be moved to Movies/Final Cut Events.

I'm guessing to some extend because I don't know what events and projects have already been moved into the library that corresponds with your Movies folder. You may have all the events and projects already; I can't see that. The only thing I've seen is keyword collections and the contents of one keyword collection, no events, and no libraries.

Hi Tom,

That's the one I mentioned in an earlier note, that is in Chapter 1 of some exercise files. I've attached a new screen cap that shows you the file thread all the way back to movies. After Movies, it's Machintosh HD Old Final Cut events and Projects. That's got to be the folder 10.1 created when it asked if I wanted to back up old events and projects. You can see that hanna loft vid is there, but then, as you noted it has no info in it.User uploaded file

I have now transfered all media from one of external HDD to a new HDD formated in OS extended jornaled. Plugged it to the macbook with fcpx 10.1 choosed automatic update and all went fine. all event and projects is there. 🙂 Did some small tests in some of my earlier procjects and all seems to work as they should.

Had to choose file, then open llibray to find it.(in FCP) All the Events was there and the project was found under a folder called Updated Projects.

I thereafter, via finder, took my exfat formattet HDD, (the one that not updated correcly with result in not showing up in neither fcpx 10.1 on the Macbook nor on the imac fcp10.09) found in the folder called the event and project folder with all my media in it. Draw the folders metioned over to the front(or think you call it root directory) of the HDD and then deleted the library folders that was created under the attemt of updating.

Plugged the exfat HDD to the Imac fcpx 10.09 and all was back to normal 🙂

Correct me if I´m wrong, but moving the event and project folders back to where they originally was might solve the problems for those who will stay on fcp 10.09 😉

sincerely

Paul
