Lost Projects with Final Cut 10.1

Hi Like an idiot I updated final cut and chose update all for my events and projects. Some projects updated and some did not. I have one that I need to finish for a client. I saved all of my previous events and projects on my external drive, but when I go to update project and events by clicking locate them, bothe the previous projects and previous events folders are grayed out. The dialog box says this current selection is not valid. Choose another SAN location or folder.

How do I open this project in the new final cut 10.1?

Any info is greatly apreciated!

I tried rerunning the update yesterday. It got stuck on one big project all day. So I tried moving that project out and updating the rest.

Now I have projects but none of the files are linked. I thought this might be because with each update, a new library is created so I copied one of the Updated Projects folders into the "Media Drive's projects and events" library but there was no change.

You can see that I updated twice so there are 3 incomplete projects under the "Media Drive" library.

I'm having the exact same issue. I watched these videos to prepare before I upgraded and I'm still experiencing the issues many people here are describing.

  1. Internal hard drive events updated with no problems except some unlinked files
  2. "Updated Projects" Event only created on internal hard drive NOT for ANY external hard drive.
  3. Only one event per external hard drive "updates" with errors. All file links for that one event are broken (missing file) even though I see all the original files in the folder I was importing from.
  4. No projects are importing into any of the Libraries except for the projects on my internal drive which are mostly test/scratch projects anyway.

I started by trying to Update All. After that failed, I tried to "Locate" the projects and events that are missing but can't select the file that were moved to the "Old Final Cut Events and Projects" folder.

Even if I try to re-create the top level "Final Cut Events" and "Final Cut Projects". I still can't import all my projects and events from any external drive. This is major BS!

All this time and money invested in FCP X between plugins and Motion templates is such a waste if I need to swtich over to Premiere permanently.

Tom, I think that's what we're all trying to figure out. I think we all 'get' what we're supposed to do. The problem is why FCP 10.1 is doing what it's supposed to do and what looked so simple in the videos I watched. I've tried everything everyone on this forum has discussed with no luck. I can't get one event/project to update correctly when it's on an external drive.

I'm going to try moving some events/projects to my internal and see if that works but I don't have enough internal space to do that for all of my events/projects

Ok here are a few things that I've noticed:

  1. I've been able to successfully update the Libraries on 2 of my 6 external drives. The 2 drives that worked were Mac OS Extended (Journaled) filesystems.
  2. All the external drives that are giving me issues are formatted as ExFAT

Has anyone else been able to update projects on ExFAT (or FAT32) external drives?

I'm wondering if the update only works on Mac OS Extended hard drives.

Can someone confirm or deny my theory before I start shuffling around Terabytes of data to reformat my ExFat drives???

Thanks in advance!

I've been using, running and editing off of ExFAT drives since about March of 2013. Not sure which version of FCP X i started using ExFAT with but maybe 10.0.4ish?

It seems it worked before and does not work with 10.1

Basically, what happens on my ExFAT drives when I try to update is an immediate error message followed by an attempt to convert the old projects/events. Only one event is "updated" before the process completely stops. The files are missing from the updated event and no project file is copied into the new Library. Also, as someone else mentioned, there is no "Updated Projects" event created. I'm wondering if that person also has an ExFAT drive because it sounds like he has the same symptoms as me.

It's probably going to take me all weekend to move data to free up space and reformat each of my remaining drives.

Definitely not happy about this process and I don't know how I've been working on ExFAT drives all year if they're not supported. That's something that probably should've been mentioned in the update procedure. But maybe i'm the only jack@$$ using ExFAT 😟

I had this problem too! It took me a long time to figure this one out. After many experiments, I found this worked best for me.

To fix it, you need to find the 'Old Final Cut Projects' folder in Finder. Drag this from your Movies folder into your Documents Folder. After that, double click on file found on my computer as: (your computer name) Projects and Events. This should be the Final Cut file distinguished with this icon:

All old files should open in new Final Cut Pro 10.1. Hope this helps! It worked for me! 😀

Alright, done. This has fixed my problem.

For those with similar issues, I copied all of my old projects and events to a drive formatted in MAC OS extended, and they all converted with no errors or difficulties.

Insanely frustrating, I too, had no idea that I wasn't supposed to be using drives that weren't formatted in MAC OS extended, I had been using an external drive formated in EX-FAT until now.

Lesson learned. Had to shuffle everything around to format the drive, but it's worth it, as I have access to all of my work now.

Thanks to those on the message boards for all of the help!

Glad you were able to resolve the issue @JSGuenther

I was able to finally update all my projects in FCP 10.1 by doing the same thing.

Just to be clear for other users having problems with the 10.1 upgrade:

Events and Projects on an exFAT external hard drive will NOT update after upgrading to Final Cut Pro 10.1

Your external hard drive needs to be Mac OS Extended. (I'm assuming FAT32 and NTFS filesystems wouldn't be supported either)

I had several hard drives and partitions set to exFAT and had to shuffle 12TB of data back and forth this past weekend in order to backup, reformat those drives and copy everything back over to their original drives.

Hi all,

ok i have the same problem. my events; fine. my projects; no! They were ok and updated but now they are no where to be seen. My drive is mac os extended.

Final cut...major major balls up. Even when my projects were there, they have to COMPLETELY render again. It took over 15hours for 4 projects. I charge £30 per hour to edit for clients. Thats £450 you owe me!!!!

And i have yet to see if there is any benefit at all to the new system?!!

Majorly disgruntled :-(
